You don’t want to be rich. You want to live freely.

That’s it

that’s it, man.

The idea of being super-rich actually scares me. I don’t want to be so empty inside that I spend my money on $30,000 ugly handbags and giant boats and shit. I just want to pay my bills without panic and support lots of charities.

And maybe go some places

A late night interpretation of Jesus’ thoughts about rich people by Sensitive Mark

While we’re at it, don’t forget that one time that Jesus saw predatory lending practices going down in the temple and he actually got violent. Yes. Jesus got violent. Over predatory lending practices.

Throwing tables and threatening people with a whip. Jesus was super pissed.

And that part is consistent across all four of the Gospels. Mathew, Mark, Luke, and John vary in a lot of places, but they’re consistent on the money changers story. Also, the paintings that this inspired are pretty rad.

99% of the time, Jesus was all “love thy neighbor” and “turn the other cheek” and “if someone asks you to walk a mile with them, walk two,” but where usury was concerned, he’d straight up kick your ass.

Jesus: “Be chill. We should all be chill. But also don’t lend money to people and charge them ridiculously high interest rates. Don’t do that. Especially not when people borrow money for the purpose of doing the right thing and making themselves better people. I really fucking hate that. Seriously, just don’t.”

*smashcut to 2016*

Me, living in a society that is intrinsically founded upon Christian doctrine and beliefs: “Student loan debt and credit card interest rates, am I right?”

hey guys psa regarding hospital bills

don’t just pay it. do not automatically pay the hospital bill when you receive it. call your health insurance provider and POLITELY say, “excuse me, i just received a bill for $1200 for my hospital visit/ER visit/etc., is that the correct amount i’m supposed to pay?” because hospitals bill you before your health insurance and they will take your money no matter how the amount due may change based on your health insurance looking at it. 90% of the time, if your health insurance is in any way involved in the payment of that bill, you do not have to pay as much as the hospital is billing you for. call your health insurance provider first, and POLITELY request clarification, always remember that the person you are talking to is human and this is just their job, and then you will very likely find out you actually only owe $500.

don’t shout at anyone about it, don’t get mad, just understand that this is The Way Things Are right now and call your health insurance provider before paying the bill your hospital just sent you. there’s a chance the hospital bill might be correct, true, but call your health insurance provider.

THIS IS SUPER IMPORTANT. after my car accident last year the hospital billed me ~$8000. They sent me letters asking me to pay, and I called them back saying my insurance was processing the claim. This is also what I told the collection agency when they kept calling me about the $1000 emergency room fee (billed separately from the hospital fee, mind you). Once everything got straightened out, all I was actually liable for was my $200 emergency copay.

!!!!!!! things my ass didn’t know !!!!!!!!

Cool facts, the ER I got sent to after I broke my shoulder billed me nearly $2000. I called them to ask for clarificaton and they said that according to their records my insurance hadn’t paid any of the doctor’s fees, which they said sounded wrong and advised me to hold off on it until they resubmitted the bill to them. Then a couple weeks later I got my “adjusted” bill, which was the exact same amount. then TODAY I got a letter from my insurance informing me they had covered all but $45 of my bill, so now I have to play phone tag and figure out what money I owe to who because this country’s medical system is broooooookeeeennnn bulllllllshiiiiiitttttt.

Why do they want us dead so badly

stfu this price on food will keep me alive when I’m starving and putting quarters together to maybe stay alive until my next shift.

rich people: why is unhealthy food so cheap? don’t they know we have no self-control and will eat this until it causes health problems?

poor people: oh, thank god, something i can afford.

Five bucks can buy you so much more though if you take more than five minutes to prepare it.

Umm. Idk where you’re buying groceries, but $5 doesn’t get me anything.

Lol they want u to live on salted pasta and nothing else. XDDD God forbid people want something cheap that TASTES good.

Like- if u have more than $5 u can buy lots of things in bulk and per serving it’s cheaper. But for just straight $5??? Fuck outta here. $5 is like the cost of one spice at a grocery store ffs

Yeah for just straight $5 I could maybe buy a bag of rice and a jar of peanut butter, and that’s honestly less complete nutrition than that fast food, which at least has some vegetables in it, some meat, etc.

Rich people don’t get that being poor actually costs money. Terry Pratchett summed it up pretty well in one of the Discworld books: “But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that’d still be keeping his feet dry in ten years’ time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.”

In fact, it’s such a good example that one widely used term to describe this socioeconomic bullshit is literally ‘Vime’s Boots’

if you ever think history isn’t an important subject just remember that my friend’s solution to poverty was to “just print more money”

Well isn’t it?

tell that to the weimar republic

[horrified german screaming in the distance]

Ok so many people may not know what this is about.  After World War I in Germany the country was pretty much bankrupt and on top of that they were being forced by the allies to pay restitution for the war.  In order to try to fix these problems the Weimar Republic which was the government that took over after the war decided to just print more money.  Because of this the country faced hyperinflation which basically means that everything became majorly expensive and the money was pretty much worthless. This is a picture of a man that is  literally carrying money around in a wheelbarrow because that is how much money it took to pay for things:

These are some children playing with stacks of money because they were cheaper than toys:

And here is another:

So in short no you cannot fix poverty by printing more money.

My favorite is that there’s this story my history teacher told us (one of the best teachers I’ve ever had, really inspired the love of history in me) that once a woman was carrying around a basket of money and left her basket outside for a second. When she came back, someone had stolen the basket and left the stacks of money because the basket was actually worth more than all the money in it.

A snippet from an article on Huffington Post about what it means to be working poor.

Pretty spot on…

I got into an argument today with someone who is a landlord, and they were outraged, outraged, to find that their evicted tenants owned an Xbox 360. Never mind that the console was ten years old and worth perhaps $50 on Craigslist, they were outraged that their evicted tenants did not sell it, along with the very clothes on their back, to pay their back rent. I tried to explain to him that when you are $1800 in back rent, $50 isn’t even a dent in that debt. Why bother? Why bother selling that $50 item if it isn’t going to get you any less evicted? If it’s not going to save you, you’ll hold on to it. Money becomes meaningless when you’ll never have enough to hold onto. You just let it flow like water through your hands. It’s all gone anyways, no matter what you do. It was gone before it ever touched you.

The other day I got very mad at someone because their justification of why a family didn’t deserve their council house was because they had decorated the front of their house with xmas lights. DO YOU REALLY KNOW WHAT ITS LIKE TO LIVE WITH NO SMALL PLEASURES AT ALL?!?!? DO YOU REALLY?!?!

This is one of the great end results of capitalism: we treat people as if the only thing they should care about are their mechanical needs but without things to nourish the soul or the capacity to talk about same, we fall apart.

We aren’t meant to be things which sit in blank boxes waiting to be used by our employers.  Nothing in nature acts that way.  Nothing’s meant to.

The need rich people have for poor people to constantly perform some sort of Dickensian display of abject poverty is so goddamn disgusting and proves that, yes, it is all about status markers. Rich people want visible proof that others are beneath them. It’s malicious and nauseating. And the kicker is that they’re usually too busy being impressed with their own wealth and sense of superiority to use their brains, because as already stated in the other comments, having technology or a couple of small pleasures is *not* a reliable indicator of income. This anti-poor people shit is revolting.

a man with a degree and a job making in a month what i make in a year will pull out his phone to calculate exactly what 20% of his fucking $15 haircut was and leave me $3

a cocktail waitress will hand me $30 and walk out the door

the difference isn’t their income, the difference is how much they value the work i do

Not enough notes on this post.

But as a Sunday School graduate, I enjoyed this.

Also pretty sure “give it away” does not mean “to your already spoiled children” but $2 says at least one asshole will call for getting rid of the estate tax tonight.
