i would like to share this sequence of events

  1. Viennese Jewish actress Hedy Lamarr marries ethnically Jewish Austrofascist arms dealer (and purported party-thrower for Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini and then-biffles with Hermann Göring), Friedrich Mandl, who forces her to convert to Catholicism and have a Catholic wedding
  2. Turns out he’s a controlling fuck (who was surprised) who hated that she simulated a climax on screen and kept her from her acting career so she fled and made a career in Hollywood, but as wartime approached she felt guilty for having a luxurious career as the state of the world became what it was, and wanted to do something about it
  3. She comes into contact with American-born avant-garde composer, pianist and female endocrinology enthusiast George Antheil, of German heritage, because she wants suggestions for bigger tits, but they end up talking about torpedoes instead
  4. The two of them invent a weaponized player piano, using a mechanism from one of Antheil’s avant-garde compositions and the knowledge Lamarr gained from her shitty marriage to a fascist arms dealer, which used frequency-hopping spread-spectrum technology (which gave way to WiFi, GPS, and Bluetooth) to encrypt torpedo torpedo attack signals by use of a piano roll, where all 88 keys matched a different frequency making it too difficult to jumble and send torpedoes off course
  5. I reiterate, a conversation about wanting bigger tits led to the conceptualization of a torpedo encrypter controlled by a piano meant to defeat the Nazis
  6. It got patented in 1942 but the US Navy was too hesitant to use technology from outside the military so it didn’t get used
  7. Hedy instead sold kisses and a lunch even went for $4.5 million, for war bonds, and she dubbed herself “just a plain gold-digger for Uncle Sam”
  8. The Cuban Missile Crisis happened, after which the patent had already expired, and the US Navy used her technology
  9. She only ever got any recognition in 1997 for this, three years before her death. Her ashes are scattered in the Vienna Woods.

I know there are a ton of “all hail our mother of wifi Hedy Lamarr” posts out there but I don’t know if any of them quite capture the beautiful absurdity of how this genius ended up doing what she did, so

The science world is freaking out over this 25-year-old's answer to antibiotic resistance

A 25-year-old student has just come up with a way to fight drug-resistant superbugs without antibiotics.
The new approach has so far only been tested in the lab and on mice, but it could offer a potential solution to antibiotic resistance, which is now getting so bad that the United Nations recently declared it a “fundamental threat” to global health.
Antibiotic-resistant bacteria already kill around 700,000 people each year, but a recent study suggests that number could rise to around 10 million by 2050.
In addition to common hospital superbug, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), scientists are now also concerned that gonorrhoea is about tobecome resistant to all remaining drugs.
But Shu Lam, a 25-year-old PhD student at the University of Melbourne in Australia, has developed a star-shaped polymer that can kill six different superbug strains without antibiotics, simply by ripping apart their cell walls.
“We’ve discovered that [the polymers] actually target the bacteria and kill it in multiple ways,” Lam told Nicola Smith from The Telegraph. “One method is by physically disrupting or breaking apart the cell wall of the bacteria. This creates a lot of stress on the bacteria and causes it to start killing itself.”
The research has been published in Nature Microbiology, and according to Smith, it’s already being hailed by scientists in the field as “a breakthrough that could change the face of modern medicine”.
Before we get too carried away, it’s still very early days. So far, Lam has only tested her star-shaped polymers on six strains of drug-resistant bacteria in the lab, and on one superbug in live mice.
But in all experiments, they’ve been able to kill their targeted bacteria - and generation after generation don’t seem to develop resistance to the polymers.

I love this solution because it’s just… So simple. Everyone is getting deeper and deeper into pharmacology trying to find new stuff and new combos that’ll overcome bacterial resistance (while Big Pharma rakes in the profits) and this student was like “what if.. We just.. Physically rip it the fuck apart?? What’s it gonna do? Develop resistance to me cutting a bitch?”

8-year-old Mexican Girl Wins Nuclear Sciences Prize For Her Invention
At just 8 years old, Xóchitl Guadalupe Cruz has invented a device to help low-income families.The little girl from Chiapas was recognized by UNAM's Institute of Nuclear Sciences for her outstanding scientific achievement.

“At just 8 years old, Xóchitl has designed and constructed a solar-powered device to heat water, using only recycled materials, Cultura Colectiva reports.

For many, this device may seem totally unnecessary.  But, in Xóchitl’s community, where resources are scarce, “people don’t have the money to buy heaters, so they chop down trees to get firewood [to heat the water],” says Xóchitl.

Her device not only functions to provide hot water to low-income families in her community, it also saves trees!

Xóchitl’s family helped her set the device up on their roof and have been using it to heat water to bathe.  Xóchitl says she always bathes quickly though, “so [the hot water] will last for my little brother.”

MEET THE GENIUS BUSH FAMILY; TEENS HAVE MASTER’S DEGREES, MOM IS ATTORNEY AND ARCHITECT

It has to be America’s most amazing family. Meet the Bushes from South Florida overachievers who stand at the ready to serve their country. Gisla and Bobby Bush have 9 children, who are some of the brightest young minds in the US.

Three of the oldest had graduated from college while they were still teenagers.

Gabrielle Bush graduated from college with a Bachelor’s Degree in health administration at 18. At 19 she received her Master’s Degree in public administration.

Grace Bush graduated from high school and college in the same week at 16. At 18 she earned her Master’s Degree in public administration.

Gisla Bush was only 18 when she graduated from college with a Bachelor’s Degree in urban design.

Other children are home-schooled as the rest of the family. All of them play musical instruments.

Their mom was asked about the secret source:

I bet you haven’t heard about this family that raise prodigy kids. The media always keep silent about successful Black people. 

That’s why representation matters.

Hazel Scott playing two pianos at the same damn time with ease

Hazel Scott was a musical sorcerer and a civil rights hero.   She:

  •  was admitted to Julliard at 8.  
  • was performing in top venues by 16.  
  • pioneered “swinging the classics” and made the equivalent of a million dollars a year doing it.  
  • was the first person of color to have their own national TV show.  
  • went to Hollywood but refused to be cast as a “singing maid.”  Demanded and got control over her casting, her wardrobe, and how footage featuring her was cut.  
  • refused to perform in segregated venues and led charges for integration in several northern cities, notably Spokane.  

She was brought down by the House Committee on Unamerican Activities, and has been largely forgotten.  But she was a sorcerer, and a hero.
