Students at Charleston County School of the Arts in North Charleston, South Carolina, have had enough. Too many girls have been sent home because of a strict dress code policy that they claim targets girls unfairly. Now, they’re doing something about it. Not just to protest the dress code — but also how it’s being enforced.

so today i found out that i’m allowed to carry a knife with me to school as long as it’s smaller than 3 ½ inches but i still can’t show my shoulders and if thats not a perfect description of american schooling idk what is
One time in high school a teacher saw my bra strap slip out of my shirt sleeve (because I have no shoulders) and she told me in front of the class that if I didn’t fix it permanently so that she and the boys couldn’t see it she would send me home for the day. So I reached up my shirt and unclasped my bra and removed it and shoved it in my gym bag. All the boys just stared at me and nodded slowly and went back to reading, and the teacher was horrified. “You can’t do that! Put it back!” “But you said you didn’t want to see it. Now you can’t see it.” She didn’t write me up, and it never came up again.
My favorite part is that the boys didn’t even give a shit, the teacher was the one freaking out.
a minimum of 40-60 girls were dress coded at my school this morning, but not even ONE male was. a percentage of those girls weren’t able to have a change of clothes delivered to them by a parent and were forced to miss a number of final exams. no one at our school has ever been particularly fond of the dress code, however this is taking it too far. if you’ve successfully fought/know someone who successfully fought against dress code please help us by informing us on how to go about ridding our school of this sexist code. honestly, calling a student a skank???? NOT OKAY. we live in Southern California, and right now our weather averages about 100°F (roughly 38°C) and girls are expected to wear long pants. girls were FORCED to miss FINAL EXAMS just because what they were wearing was deemed “distracting”. a large portion of these girls proved they were not breaking dress code (no shorter than four inches above the knee) by measuring with a ruler, but were not released. please help spread this and let us know if there’s any way to fight this without causing us more trouble!
straight boys are weak and pathetic, queer girls walk into the ladies changing room and see ten women naked, do they stare? do they say something inappropriate? do they make them uncomfortable? no because they have the common fucking sense to recognise when a situation is sexual and that people deserve the most basic level of respect to not be harassed, yet here we are banning shorts and low cut tops in school because straight boys are weak and pathetic

I was fighting dress codes when I was thirteen / fourteen. That was back in 1999 and 2000. The fact that this shit is still going on is so gross. Grateful that the resistance is still happening.
