abstract and modern art haters are sooo snobby like klein literally Created an entirely new pigment and then painted a canvas in a way where the brush strokes wouldn't be visible. the insinuation that people with no skill could reproduce that is so annoying because unless you are skilled at color mixing and painting you definitely couldn’t lmao

i hope it's okay to add this because i think it hits the nail directly on the head

Honestly, it's like picking up a book and saying "I know all these words, I can type, I could have written this" like there's no middle step between the technical ability and the finished work.

People have written a lot of touchy-feely pieces on this subject but I thought I’d get right to the heart of the matter

I had a tattoo client ask if I ever used AI to design tattoos for me. Man I spent the better part of a decade doing shitty bit work as a graphic designer and now that I have the space to do whatever I want, I'm gonna let the computer generate random garbage for me? What next should I have a computer that eats my dinner and fucks my wife?

I feel like people get so hung up on the results of a thing that they don't appreciate that the process of making it is, actually, enjoyable.

It's like if you have a friend who likes to bake, asking if they'd like to just buy cupcakes from the store instead of making them. The end result of the cupcake is secondary to the joy you get from having made cupcakes.

Art isn't a slog or a chore or something I want to avoid. Art is fun. It's rewarding. It feels good to do it. You may as well be asking me if I want the AI to watch television for me, it doesn't make any sense, I'm not participating and would gain nothing from it.

All capital letters should have a leveled-up form

So far I’ve got

  • ladder letters: A, E, F, H, T
  • humpback B’s and P’s get as many bumps as you think they need
  • circle O’s, you just keep spiraling in til you feel like you’ve made your point
  • tree letters branch into smaller versions of themselves ad nauseum: X, Y
  • spider Q’s, so many legs

Please add your own unsettling godtier capitals!

New alphabet dropped!

oh my god, it’s beautiful

(future handwritten notes are gonna be so wonderfully cursed now, thank you! :D )

well it’s going to take some getting used to, @ceekari (don’t mind the redacted letter between T and U)

But I think i’ve taken a real shine to it!

letters are nice.

One reason that people have artist’s block is that they do not respect the law of dormancy in nature. Trees don’t produce fruit all year long, constantly. They have a point where they go dormant. And when you are in a dormant period creatively, if you can arrange your life to do the technical tasks that don’t take creativity, you are essentially preparing for the spring when it will all blossom again.

Marshall Vandruff, one of the best teachers I have ever had, on artist’s block. Said during a webinar done on Visualarium to advertise his upcoming online course on animal anatomy (source links to webinar)  (via pale-afternoon)

THIS QUOTE HELPS SO MUCH OMG

This is actually really important to know - like, the number of times I mentally beat myself up for not producing 2000 words a day like “good” writer friends (remembering also that said writer friends don’t also have normal jobs that take portions of their time and creative energy) when actually it’s totally normal and fine not to be in a constant state of massive creative output.  You just have to trust that even if the ideas aren’t flowing right this very second doesn’t mean they won’t start flowing again soon.

(via llywela13)

this is why i embrace “art blocks” and just focus on technique instead of producing more and more

THIS WAS SO BEAUTIFULLY WELL SAID I NEEDED THIS

This movie is possibly the worst example of poor marketing in the history of film.  It was marketed as a wacky comedy like Freaky Friday or something, when in fact it is a deeply moving film that is mostly serious with some humorous and lighthearted moment.  It’s one of the most profound films about the essence of humanity that I’ve ever seen.

There is a memorable scene in the diner starring an art book that moved me to tears when I first saw it, because I’d never seen such a gut-punching statement about the power of art and human creativity to move the soul, and the central statement about the dulling of the human emotional life through conformity is one that’s stayed with me for years.

After seeing this film, I felt like I looked at the world a little differently.

Architecture Studio, a new set from Lego, comes with 1,210 white and translucent bricks. More notable is what it lacks: namely, instructions for any single thing you’re supposed to build with it. Instead, the kit is accompanied by a thick, 277-page guidebook filled with architectural concepts and building techniques alongside real world insights from prominent architecture studios from around the globe. In other words, this box o’ bricks is a little different. Where past Lego products might have had the happy ancillary effect of nurturing youngsters’ interest in architecture, here, that’s the entire point.

Seventy-three different kinds of bricks are included in the set. But bricks are easy to find. It’s the guidebook that’s truly new. Its pages offer accessible overviews of basic architectural concepts, along with illustrated exercises for exploring them in Lego form. Pages on negative space and interior sections, for example, encourage budding builders to think not only about how their miniature creations look from the outside but also in terms of what sorts of spaces they contain within them.

oh, oh I am buying this for sure. I’ve wanted a lego set for a while I haven’t played with lego in ages and I’ve wanted to get a box for a while now.

THE WANT!!!!!!!!!! THE. WANT.
