Many places have a “forest that shouldn’t be entered.” Even people who are used to working in the mountains feel there is something there. They are suddenly overcome with fear and it becomes the custom to avoid certain places. These places exist. I don’t know what is there, but I think they are real. I’m not a believer in the occult, but the world is more than we can fathom with our five senses. This world doesn’t exist just for humans. So I think it’s all right to have such things. This is why I think it’s a mistake to think about nature from the idea of efficiency, that forests should be preserved because they are essential for human beings …
I am concerned, because for me the deep forest is connected in some way to the darkness deep in my heart. I feel that if it is erased, then the darkness inside my heart would also disappear, and my existence would grow shallow.

I love this phenomenon. I'm sure there's a better terminology for it than my ramblings, but I see it everywhere, it goes beyond foreshadowing and into things like subtext, and I don't think it's necessarily accidental.

A very common example you see in online spaces are trans folks drawing themselves as the opposite sex long before the realize years after the fact that that might mean something.

Hayao Miyazaki has the most chaotic way of making films that I've ever seen. He has no idea how the story is going to end when production starts. In Spirited Away he described the flooding at the end as a fortunate accident. He wanted the train scene to be completely barren in contrast to all the previous visual noise, and was relieved when he realized he had foreshadowed it.

There's a fun interview with spielburg about close encounters of the third kind where he's confronted with the interpretation that the movie ends with music and computer science coming together which were the respective professions of his parents, so it was a scene about him reaching out to communicate with his parents, and he laughs because he didn't realize that when he made it.

Edward Bulwer-Lytton said “Talent does what it can: Genius does what it must.” and I think that describes this perfectly. You know what a 4 act structure is in basic terms, and there's nothing particularly superhuman about recreating that formula, but there's this small but significant part of you that, unbeknownst to you, is intentionally calling shots and turning that work into something more than you intended.

You could call it accidental, but you did it. Another good quote from red letter media: "You may not have noticed, but your brain did."

Mash-Ups of Film Directors and Their Creations

King Cuts is a solo exhibition of new work by Seattle-based artist Mike Leavitt. Great film directors get cut up. They take pains with the details, story, money and sacrifices to their vision. Their body succumbs to the pressure. So Mike Leavitt carved Tarantino, Kubrick, Scorsese and more physically consumed by their work. Hitchcock, Coppola and others are cut from blocks of wood like directors cut a take or reel. There’s a risk of mistakes with every slice. Directors commit to a story at every cut. Leavitt unmasks wizards behind the camera like Spielberg and David Lynch to get a taste of their own medicine. ‘King Cuts’ are totems of satire and devotion to the 16 best storytellers ever.

In the words of the artist Mike Leavitts:

These are 1:4 scale, each is 18 inches tall or wide, sculpted from scratch in wood and polymer clay by myself in my garage. Each is painted with acrylic and carved from 80 to 100% wood. Smaller details, faces and hands are sculpted in polymer clay blended into wood. These sculptures are available to purchase. Please refer to Jonathan LeVine Gallery for all purchase inquiries and other information.
