susie grits her teeth and grinds her jaw and spends the entire spring of their fourth grade year plotting how to get back at calvin for stealing mr. bun and dropping him in a mud puddle.

(it involves putting hobbes into a dress and taking polaroids; she still has the photos, even thirty years later)

she does her homework. does his homework too, sometimes, because mrs. wormwood gives them different math problems to discourage cheating, and susie likes math. his mom finds out when they’re in sixth grade, and offers her four times the going rate to tutor calvin in math. she agrees, because even at twelve she knows college isn’t cheap (not the ones she’s eyeing, anyway).

she has to learn quickly about superheroes and dinosaurs and aliens, because calvin won’t listen unless there’s at least one. she has her own opinions of aliens (real, but not the tentacled fanged monsters calvin draws in the margins; her aliens are gorgeously strange monsters, elegant, like a degas painting reflected in rainy puddles, glittering in distorted neon), and dinosaurs are cool, but they’re a boring sort of cool, not black hole kind of cool, so it’s only superheroes she lets him go on about.

this turns out to be a mistake. though he draws aliens and ray guns and flying saucers on the back sides of his homework, he has a whole thing built up around stupendous man. she’s seen the costume, but didn’t know there was lore. she doesn’t want to know the lore.

it’s stupid. no one can just fly. that’s not how the world works. capes are dumb. she can’t believe his mom made him another costume after he hit a growth spurt.

she still tutors him, but they drift apart in high school. calvin and moe somehow become friends, become even bigger assholes together, and susie discovers calculus and girls. she gets into harvard and yale and stanford and others, chooses to go to california. he waves at her from his driveway while she drives away in the moving truck.

“you were never stupid,” she tells him on the phone when they’ve drifted back into each other’s lives her senior year. “you just didn’t care.”

“yeah,” he laughs, and she pretends she can’t hear the desperation in it; his girlfriend kicked him out, he lost his job, and he’s now in the unfortunate position of acknowledging that his father was right and education was important. she has two finals to study for, the nasa interview next week, and a grant application to finish, but he’s had a rough week. she can take an hour to listen.

“the community college isn’t bad,” she suggests, though she knows it sounds patronizing coming from someone set to graduate stanford with honors.

“you mean i can’t just put on my stupendous man costume and live off the media attention?”

susie snorts. “not spaceman spiff? there’s a tv show there, i’m sure.” she’s been watching a lot of star trek in what little spare time she has.

“nah,” he says, “spiff’s always been your territory.”

they drift apart again, she goes to houston and he goes to art school. she loses track of him entirely right around curiosity’s landing. she skips their twenty-year reunion; she’s in the middle of a move down to chile for a three-year stint at atacama.

a package arrives the middle of her second year in the desert.

it’s a comic book. spaceman spiff, volume one. hardcover, full color. one of his signature tentacled fanged aliens takes up most of the entire cover, while a small astronaut with a ray gun hides behind a rock. he’s gotten much better, but it’s still unmistakably calvin’s art.

except - she squints at the astronaut. she flips open the book, thumbs through a few pages.

spiff isn’t the calvin-insert she remembers from their youth.

it’s her.

mousy brown hair, button nose, mr. bun tucked away in the back of her rocket ship.

she flips back to the first page.

thanks for not giving up on me. - c

You show up for your first day at Copyright-Free Magic School. As you're going through orientation, you're informed that all new students get a school-assigned familiar that they are responsible for housing and maintaining. The staff member assures you that your assigned familiar is appropriately chosen and reflects you in some way.

Spin this to find out yours. (Remember, you are responsible for maintaining this familiar in your dorm room.)

we really can’t overstate how damaging it has been to indoctrinate the public with the idea that if they let themselves eat as much as they want, they’ll eat too much. human bodies, when permitted over the long term to eat as much as they want, actually get really, really good at calibrating their hunger and satiety, and will over time eat exactly the right amount for themselves. the common conception of a balanced eater as a minimal or restrained eater is absolutely wrong. balanced eaters eat quite a lot (compared to diet cultural ideas about right intake amounts), and they do so consistently and permanently. healthy, balanced eating isn’t some tightrope walk, it’s a gigantic net of total permission to eat.

How to Finish

I drew this poster for Jon Acuff and his FINISH book tour. Big thanks to Jon for this collaboration, his book has some great ideas about how to complete creative and life goals.

Love this, but reblogging it specifically for “Get rid of secret rules.” That’s one of the most amazing illustrations—and points—I’ve ever seen.

so important especially for perfectionists who procrastinate and never finish, or even start because they set such high standards for themselves.

Consider yourself tagged if you are reading this:

Make this picrew of yourself

Take this uquiz (How Fandom Would See You If You Were A Fictional Character)

Thanks for the tag @capvers-my-love, this was fun!

I don't know what I put to get that result on the uquiz... Inaccurate? Maybe probably

No Pressure Tags (But It Is Very Fun!):

Thanks for the tag

I feel like that quiz result is unfortunately accurate and I don't like it. It's more accurate than the Picrew.

I can't even think of anyone to tag, anyone feel free, so sorry to mutuals I missed please join

Thanks for the taggggg!!! I love these kind of things!! I can’t take screenshots unfortunately (phone = broken) so this is what I got…

The Hot One

You're that one hunk that EVERYONE has a crush on. Your wit and charm is known to make fangirls faint, and half of the entire fandom's thirst posts are about you. You could eat a cookie and everyone would lose their shit. Congrats, dude.

Lowkey cannot agree with what I got lol but it is what it is 🤷‍♀️

This is funny. I compare to bastard(bad) and it's also the result I got last time I took this quiz- choosing all the same answers.

ty for the tag <3

well um, thanks i think?

@cobalt-axolotl @rileywritesreblogs and anyone else who wants to (srry to everyone i missed lol)

Ok, that answer is a straight up lie, but whatever. Been a while since I did this picrew so here’s a new version of me in it.

Open tags

Yeah how about no

Good picrew for my current look. I don't think this is the same result for the quiz that I got last time, but it isn't wrong.

I really need to make a list of mutuals than enjoy being tagged in things like this.

notice anything strange about the arrangement of your trinkets?

>:3

The new arrangement of my trinkets has bypassed my adhd object habituation, introducing variety and newness to my life and breaking the pattern of sameness that has caused them to disappear into the visual background noise of my life. I am once again able to notice and appreciate my trinkets.

Thank you trinket rearranging imp.

Worldbuilding Tidbits!

I wanted to shuffle fantasy roles a little bit in one of my settings and I ended up with

Orcs that live in seeded high elevation valleys and herd giant mountain goats, while still being particularly martially talented and the greatest military ally for mankind.

Elves that live in great symmetrical stone cities on the plains whose streets are lined with wire wrapped trees, giant full sized bonsai trees that are pruned and manipulated into perfection.

Dwarves that steward the great forests as sustainable lumberjacks, buitlig great wooden halls.

Gnomes that live in great stone warrens and rule the mountains hearts with their ability to closely follow veins in the earth without wasteful removal of stone beyond that which is required.

Amoral Angels and Demons as avatars of Perfection and Disorder rather than good or evil.

Devils that are exaggerations of human qualities without vilifying them and celestial beings that exaggerate other qualities without placing them on a pedestal.

As a 30 year old man who escaped the Alt-right pipeline, you're not going to be happy about the answer.

All I hear from leftists is how much they hate me for my immutable traits, how much they blame me for everything wrong with the world, how much they want me and everyone who looks like me dead.

Whereas Alt-right types would call me "brother" and welcome me into their ranks so long as I hated the right ways.

Do you understand the difference?

I'm an ally and support equality because I feel it's the morally correct choice to make, but holy fuck is it difficult to reconcile that with the fact that means fighting for a lot of people who see you as the scum of the earth.

Read this and then read it again and then read some fucking bell hooks because this is a legitimate problem on the left.

"To create loving men, we must love males. Loving maleness is different from praising and rewarding males for living up to sexist-defined notions of male identity. Caring about men because of what they do for us is not the same as loving males for simply being." - bell hooks, The Will to Change https://bellhooksbooks.com/product/the-will-to-change/

ive seen people say the left should appeal to men more but not ask why it doesnt already. well why do all these right wing grift influencers appeal to men? its because they target impressionable young men who just got rejected and wanna hear that its womens fault no 1 wants to fuck them. i swear we need a big oily hyper masculine dudebro to start making videos titled "how to be instantly attractive to women" "15 male self improvement tips" "how i became an alpha male in 30 days" and the videos are just the guy sitting down and saying "hey dont stress about how you look or what other people think of you because the right person will love you for you. remember to take accountability for your actions and treat women with respect even when they reject you and see woman as people and not potential girlfriends" or something along those lines. like all his videos are just teaching self love, compassion for women, how to react to rejection ect then i swear there would be way more guys on the left

May I introduce you all to Dr. Nerdlove.

Harris O’Malley is a deeply compassionate man who saw this exact issue of young men not being met where they are and getting sucked into hate movements like Gamergate and Alpha Male dating optimizer bullshit. So he started a dating advice column to counter it. (Plus other social skills that isolated young men are missing out on).

He's a really great example of a leftist man who took on the work to be there for young men in danger of listening to grifters. I don't really see him talked about on this website. Good follow on Blue Sky, though.

I was intrigued by the idea of Dr. NerdLove and his "advice column for bros" approach, so I decided to check it out and folks....This is so good. Context: In my job, I offer one-on-one coaching to adolescents and young adults who have disabilities to help them meet their goals and transition into adult life/build skills for adulthood. Most of my students right now are young college-aged men (some of whom are in school and some of whom work.) One of the big things I do with them is helping to build and maintain social networks: MAKING FRIENDS!!!! Many of my students are lonely! For some of them, the social networks very much include wanting a partner. They ask me for advice about (usually heterosexual) romantic relationships. As a queer woman who's not much older than them (which is to say, not much relationship experience) I often struggle to know how to answer their questions. I just don't know what it looks like from their point of view. So, I thought something like this might be helpful to point them to. I'm not in the demographic the column is reaching to, but I did grow up in several friend groups where I was one of the only girls, and I had friends who got onto the early stages of that Gamergate/alpha male/incel pipeline. I'm an amateur anthropologist by degree, which means I learned a lot of stuff about how cultures and societies work, how to interview people about complex social problems, and how to make things more equitable for communities that need it. I read and see the same news as the rest of you. I work as a camp counselor for middle and high schoolers in the summers. All of which leads me to reaffirm for you: Our boys are not okay. A scary high number of them are getting exposed to online communities that are misinformed at best and predatory at worst, and they lack the experience to know how to counteract that. The election results are going to be like pouring gasoline on a fire.

Enter Dr. NerdLove. Harris O'Malley tells young men things they need to know and start to internalize, and he does it in a way that is relatable to them, compassionate, and humorous. One of my favorite articles is "What Men Really Need," In it, he talks about the social isolation many men face, how they struggle to get support and connection from their male friends in emotionally fulfilling ways, and how that's devastating for everyone. He also tells them how to be a better friend and change the dynamic.

In other articles, he explains the importance of building confidence, self-care, how to overcome feeling awkward, that looks aren't everything. (again, all in terms a boy who's been lurking around on certain Reddits would understand.) He makes a point to explain what some of the risks of dating and relationships are for women (and how history informs that.)

And yes. He's saying the quiet part out loud (linked text is a news source.)

This is going to help me be better equipped to help my students with something really important to them. I think it's also going to be a protective, positive force for a lot of boys who need it.

Beware of Riverseed

Wei Shi Lindon had wanted to defy Fate, reach for the heights of the Sacred Arts and escape the weakness of his past. Classic Xianxia hopes and dreams. Though honestly? Looking at his memories, it really felt like he actually had this whole main character thing going on—a visit from the Heavens and a fantastic quest to save his homeland and everything. Too bad miss 90’s anime space-age magical girl had been completely right about how likely he was to die on this path.

I came-to in the middle of dear old Wei getting his ass beat by some stereotypical pissed off and jumped up initiate. Let me tell you, that was horse shit. Wei was kind of an idiot for not going to ground the moment he’d pissed the dude off. Like, how many times did he have to get warned before he was going to take things seriously?

Luckily another disciple was kind enough to haul my twitching body back to the Medicine Hall, talking the whole time about how he had planned to take Wei to get his fancy spiritual elixirs himself to make sure something like this didn’t happen as if he wasn’t actually just miffed that someone else had gotten to my stuff first.

It only really hit me that I was in magical china land while I was moaning in pain in the infirmary. Apparently one of the kicks had hit poor Wei hard enough, and in just the right way to stop his heart and kill him. And there, curled up on the ground, I got shoved in. At least I got his memories, and the knowledge on how to actually cycle the medicine that I’d been given.

That and enough context to hide to stupid wooden badge around my neck. I mean—come on—the dude was literally walking around with a neon sign saying “please beat me up, I can’t defend myself and no one will care if you hurt me.” I was ditching the thing the moment I got a chance.

Maybe that wasn’t a very kind way to think about the guy whose body I was living in—but I wasn’t feeling particularly charitable given that not only had I landed in the middle of a sect and a valley whose definition of honor was so out of whack that it would make Merriam Webster weep, but I’d landed in the body of literally the weakest guy around in a world with no goddamned mortals!

Everyone cultivated here! Everyone! My first instinct was to run as far away from any Xianxia tropes as physically possible, but even the trees and the insects in this Valley could end me with half a thought. Let alone all the bridges that grouchy had been burning in his rush to get out of this place. Working in the archives was a perfectly fine fate! I’d have ran home and jumped on that in a heartbeat if Wei hadn’t pissed off the Patriarch and his grandson in his hurry to get here.

I wouldn’t have even had to have stuck around long enough to get crushed by the giant monster. A couple of decades to hit Iron and then out before the mountains fell down. I don’t know why the idea hadn’t occurred to Wei, he could have taken his wife and kids and run and called it good. That’s not true, I knew why he hadn't thought of it—protagonist syndrome—and look where it had gotten him. Look where it had gotten me.

My insides twisted and I couldn’t tell if it was the situation I was stuck in or the absolutely brutal healing pill. If there was one thing Wei’s residual instincts and I agreed on at this point, it was that we weren’t sticking around long enough to cycle this thing the slow way. I was getting out of here and throwing myself at sword girls feet. Hopefully she’d keep me alive long enough to find some bolthole on the outside. Somewhere that no one had ever heard of Wei Shi Lindon the Unsouled.

"Kamala Harris has earned an eleventh-hour show of support from Palestinian, Arab and Muslim community leaders."

On October 24th, a collective statement titled "Arizona Palestinian, Arab, Muslim, and Progressive Democrats and Community Leaders Statement on Presidential Election" was published.

The 100+ signees include current or former leaders of Palestinian, Arab and Muslim organisations, the leader of Phoenix, AZ's largest mosque, Jewish activists and other elected officials. All of them have been listed at the bottom of this post.

You can read the whole statement here but I've also copy-pasted it's entire contents below.

Read. The Whole. Thing.

It is concise and will only take you a few minutes. While you read, recognise that these words are not representative of every single person belonging to these demographics. Palestinians, Arabs and Muslims are not a monolith, and have a right to feel any way they do about this election. To those who do not belong to these groups - refrain from adding your personal commentary in the tags, and understand how excruciating of a place this statement must have come from for both the authors, signees and the communities they represent.

What Joe Biden and Kamala Harris did in 2024.

I started this project back in January and for most of a year, every week, I came up with the highlights of what the Biden-Harris Administration did. I did it because it felt to me our media and national conversion was broken, our government was doing huge things that it felt like almost no one knew about. It's amazing how often I struggled to find a single news source that wanted to cover a huge life changing project.

This is the last Friday before Election Day, and if you haven't already voted, take a minute to go back and look at the last 40 weeks, and decide, do you like these things or want literally the reverse on every issue.

Feel free to reblog this or go back and reblog a favorite, one that impacts your life or the one from the week of your birthday, whatever.

and remember to read past the headlines and dig to find out what your government is up to, it might shock you how much is happening that no one talks about.
