I drew a mermaid yesterday. I really can’t realistically see them as anything other than mammalian.

Then again, we are talking about mermaids. Still, I prefer the dolphin-esque ones over the fish.

Ugh. I’ve got to analyze. Okay. Mako, Haru, Nagisa, and Kou are all in a circle around the album. Which makes sense because they’re all in the photos. But look at Rei. Politely standing there with his hands behind his back, watching from the outside while they all reminisce about the past and Rin. It’s a wall of sorts, a little gathering he can’t be apart of. Now it’s not intentional for the 4 of them to exclude Rei like this but wouldn’t you want to share your fun memories with your new friend and teammate? Wouldn’t you want to let your new friend into those fun memories. It’s like swapping stories around the campfire or around the dinner table, it brings everyone closer. But they don’t do this. If they were trying to share the stories, wouldn’t there be some sort of opening in the circle? Wouldn’t they be presenting the album to Rei almost? Like Kou is doing to the boys. Rei figuratively can’t enter the circle and that pose he’s in is a very passive pose. Hands behind the back usually means “I’m not allowed to touch something” (think of little kids around breakable things) and then when we see his face up close, he’s hurt. He wants to touch, he wants to be in on everything. It’s like being left out of an inside joke with all your friends. Everyone knows but you and they don’t want to fill you in. Haru notices this briefly but doesn’t bring it up (he also does this earlier in the episode as well when Rei walks out of the practice room). I just. It pains me.

They keep saying he’s a part of the team and yet little, unconscious gestures and poses like this show that it’s almost all talk. He’s not, in their sense of the word, part of the team. But he so desperately wants to. He quit the track team to be a part of their team, he gave swimming a chance even though he couldn’t swim, he worked hard to not disappoint them and be the best he could be for his friends and his team. And yet, what was it all for? Rin-chan, Rin-chan, Rin-chan! It’s like he’s screaming “Look at me! I’m part of the team! I’m here and Rin isn’t! Look at me!” and they don’t even glance his way.
