For anyone asking is this cute, I’m going to say yes.

1. That is a very strong animal. If it wanted her to put it down, there is no way she would be holding it.

2. The position of the ears shows relaxation.

3. Nibbling at hair is how horses show affection. In a herd, they nibble at the base of each other’s manes (the very best way to pet a horse is to scratch the base of the mane about halfway down the neck). With a human they like they go for the hair as the closest equivalent.

So, yes, horse is enjoying cuddles.

Human is also very strong!

Every time I see fantasy ideas where people ride deer or dogs or wolves or what-have-you 90% of my brain goes 'oh that's COOL', because it IS and I LOVE IT, but the other 10% that's annoying and a nerd is like. there is a reason we domesticated horses specifically for riding instead of any other animal!! If u look at the motion of the topline and legs, u may notice one of these is not like the others......

.......and also significantly less likely to launch you into space by changing the shape of its spine under your butt a billion times per minute

I left tumblr for 20 minutes and this got as many notes in that time, so to clarify:

Yes, people do ride other animals!!! Camels, elephants, ostriches– the USSR tried to make a cavalry of moose. I am not saying we don't ride other critters, but I AM saying that there's a reason horses have historically dominated high-speed transport and it's not because they have glass bones and regularly die of tummy hurt

i recently found out the funniest thing about big horses recently which is that for centuries humans have sworn that the feathering on big horse’s legs has been bred in there for a reason, and the reason given is usually something to do with how it helps keep the joints warm and safe when the big horse is doing hauling work in fields.

the thing is: it doesn’t appreciably do that, because the feathers wick up water and mud, which cancels out any insulation advantage they might hypothetically confer, and also it wasn’t even put there on purpose.

the Leg Get More Hair gene is just linked to the Bones Get More Big gene. when you breed any lineage of horses to have bigger bones–not just taller, but chunkier–the leg hair just happens anyway. so every single breed of draft horse has feathered legs, and even carriage horses like friesians get feathers once they hit a certain threshold of lorge.

when you supersize your horse, mother nature throws in a free pair of booties. how cool is that?
