Can we talk about how fucking amazing the music in The Adventure Zone is? It’s so good. Griffin literally taught himself how to compose for this show and was instantly good at it. The music took this show from good to great. I distinctly remember on my first listen through of the show, that scene at the very end of petals to the metal where Sloane and Hurley turned into a cherry blossom together was the exact moment I realized, ‘oh shit this show is actually amazing’ and upon further reflection it’s because of the music. Somehow Griffin was able to hit every single emotional beat exactly and cranked up those emotions to an 11. I felt 20 different types of melancholy and each of them were slightly different and it’s because of the music. The upbeat music is so hype you can literally dance to it by itself. It’s also amazing how distinct the music is for each campaign. Each has connecting threads running through it: Balance has a digital edge almost like a video game soundtrack, Amnesty has a country-esque feel, and Graduation is plucky cartoonish. But it goes beyond that. I can tell which arc of balance a song is just by listening to it, they’re all distinct. For instance there’s a lot of synth in Suffering game and a western twang in 11th hour. Yet they all have unifying elements that make them distinctly balance, despite their differences.

Anyways sorry for the rant. tldr: griffin is amazing and his music slaps.

haven’t seen all of Griffin’s incredible singing from Graduation compiled in one place yet, so I took matters into my own hands! (I think this is all of them so far)

Griffin as Fitzroy: Uh, and then I’ll — we’ll do the Thunderman theme song that’s like — (singing) When you hear the — when you hear the lightning strike, coming over the mountains, what‘s that noise? The — you better hide… your children, and your… barn animals. Here comes the storm. Here comes the storm! Thunder — uh, Thunderman roll over the mountains! Here he — (no longer singing) We should get a bard.
Griffin: (singing) Welcome to running a Dungeons and Dragons game! Make it up and just sound confident! No one has to know! You’re just one guy! With just one brain! The weight of the world on your shoulders!
Clint: (singing) Dun-un dun-un dun-un!
Griffin: (singing) So you had a bad day! You got a crit fail! (unintelligible crosstalk)
Justin: (laughing) Oh boy!
Griffin: (singing) And you fucked it all up!
Travis: Okay.
Griffin: (singing) Your family is dead! They’re killed by… devils!
Justin: (singing) You thought you had a magic cloak but it was a lie!
Clint: (laughing)

i think my fav thing about griffin as a dm is that instead of going “unfortunately the ooze is immune to slashing damage :/” he says “if you were making a pb&j sandwich and you dropped some jelly on the counter, would you take a knife and just start cutting at it you dumb son of a bitch”

the griffin mcelroy dm aesthetic:

  • probably doesn’t own the manual
  • “harold they’re lesbians”
  • player: i do [very stupid thing] griffin: [deadpan] okay so you die
  • joe pesci voice™
  • [three years deep in a campaign] “okay we’re going to have to follow the rules this time guys”
  • can’t do british accents to save his life
  • elevators
  • 10 minute monologues with extravagant production value
  • actually kinda sucks at playing d&d
  • loves his family

this is why TMWCIFTC chapter 12 took 2 weeks to write

So I made an orchestral arrangement/remix of Arms Outstretched! I’ve wanted to do this ever since I heard it, and I had a blast making it. I composed it entirely in Musescore, using some soundfonts of actual recorded instruments to make it sound better, and did some minor editing in Audacity. I hope you guys enjoy this!
