If you’re using a site or app that replaces your text icons (I’m looking at you, Outlook, and it’s with displeasure), you can put a space in to break the replacement - :) becomes : ) for instance.
This does change the vibe slightly, but not nearly as much as suddenly getting a symbol instead.
