send an ask: get to know your author

1) is there a story you’re holding off on writing for some reason?

2) what work of yours, if any, are you the most embarrassed about existing?

3) what order do you write in? front of book to back? chronological? favorite scenes first? something else?

4) favorite character you’ve written

5) character you were most surprised to end up writing

6) something you would go back and change in your writing that it’s too late/complicated to change now

7) when asked, are you embarrassed or enthusiastic to tell people that you write?

8) favorite genre to write

9) what, if anything, do you do for inspiration?

10) write in silence or with background noise? with people or alone?

11) what aspect of your writing do you think has most improved since you started writing?

12) your weaknesses as an author

13) your strengths as an author

14) do you make playlists for your current wips?

15) why did you start writing?

16) are there any characters who haunt you?

17) if you could give your fledgling author self any advice, what would it be?

18) were there any works you read that affected you so much that it influenced your writing style? what were they?

19) when it comes to more complicated narratives, how do you keep track of outlines, characters, development, timeline, ect.?

20) do you write in long sit-down sessions or in little spurts?

21) what do you think when you read over your older work?

22) are there any subjects that make you uncomfortable to write?

23) any obscure life experiences that you feel have helped your writing?

24) have you ever become an expert on something you previously knew nothing about, in order to better a scene or a story?

25) copy/paste a few sentences or a short paragraph that you’re particularly proud of

To All Writers of Everything Ever

I need to rant about this:

Also known as the best writing program ever! It’s a full-screen writing program!

So you open it up, and it looks like this:

You’re thinking, “Ok, so what? It’s a screen with a picture. Whoopdie do.” But it get’s better! It’s customizable!

See that “appearance”? Click it.

You can also use custom fonts that you have installed!

See that “music”? Click it.

If you drag your own music into the folder, like so:

You get this!:

But wait! It gets better!

See “typing sounds”? You can change those too!

Perhaps the best is - YOU CAN USE ANY PICTURE FOR THE BACKGROUND. It will automatically fade it for you!

Seriously, guys, this tool is wonderful. You can use it for:

  • Research papers
  • Novel writing
  • Play writing
  • Short stories
  • Homework assignments
  • Ranting about your friends when they piss you off
  • Writing your shopping list

It auto-saves. It exports to .rtf. Hotkeys from Word for italicize, underlining, and bold work. You can print RIGHT FROM THERE.

And the seriously best thing ever?

It fits on a flash drive. The entire thing with added music is maybe 131MBs.

The bestest thing ever.

It’s free.

HOW TO BRING BACK PPL WHO STOPPED WRITING IN 2009

Alright shitstains listen up because I just found god in a bottle.

If you’re a nerd like me your body’s probably riddled with a few nerd tattoos yeah? Some of ‘em in some pretty obvious places? Maybe you work in a professional environment that frowns upon body ink? Maybe you’re a cosplayer and you have some revealing outfits that you need to cover up for, yeah? Tattoos that you can’t afford that $30 Kat Von D Tattoo cover up because you’re a cheap broke shit?

Story of my life bud.

Now I have a pretty obvious Squad 11 tattoo, because I’m a Bleach nerd and Zaraki Kenpachi is my husband, and honestly it’s difficult to hide it in some of my cosplays because it’s bright and black and right smack dab on my shoulder. Poor planning on my part but hey, squad represent.

You see that glorious miracle up there? That’s Mehron Tattoo Cover. You see those pictures underneath it? Tattoo? What fucking tattoo?! It’s gone!!!! Vamoosed!!! Like I never got the ink in the first place!!!!

This shit is durable, and I mean durable. It’s completely waterproof and that first picture of my tattoo is actually what it looked like after scrubbing at it with two makeup wipes. TWO. It’s not going anywhere

And the best part?

IT COMES IN DIFFERENT SKINTONES. BAM. WHAT.

I mean it’s not phenomenal but hey at least it’s not just “pale as fuck”.

And you wanna know the second best part?

Yeah. $12. Not $30. Because $12 is much more reasonable than $30.

As for size reference, that’s how big it is in that third picture right there. It’s honestly the best investment I could have made and everybody should know about it.

Go forth and conquer with your newfound knowledge. You’re all welcome.

As someone who used to chair a stage makeup department, Mehron and Ben Nye are going to be cheaper and better than whatever concealer/orange eye shadow/green lipstick whatever weird tutorial you found or expensive-ass luxury concealer.

Why you ask?

Because Mehron and Ben Nye are stage makeup. They’re meant to give thick, full coverage in one layer that can stand up to cameras and stage lights. Blend it out, powder it, and you’ll never look back. Plus it’s cheap enough that you can buy 2 and mix the perfect shade.

This will work on scars, too.

Just an FYI for folks I know who may want to cover for cosplays, work, or personal reasons.

Honestly this would be a life saver for people with tats stuck looking for jobs in places that frown on them.

I’ve watched people not get jobs at places I work even though their personalities and experience levels were exactly what we were looking for purely because of personal adornment (tattoos, piercings, etc.). So to anyone who might need a product like this, I hope you see this post.

20. Life Natan for the ship list

Avatar

they have stumbled through everything together.

from shy smiles and awkward confessions to first dates and proposals, they have always held hands; pressing forward into the future.

but now — when she needed him most — he was sitting outside her hospital room, wracked with fear.

because he couldn’t bring himself to face the doctor’s words. for weeks, natalie had been intermittently sick. she battled mild vomiting, a painful cough and plenty of wadded - up tissues ended up in the trashcan. after discovering that numerous cases of influenza had been reported across the state — and that some were becoming volatile — they immediately scheduled an appointment with their physician.

the door behind him opened, and out stepped dr. francisco; followed by a quiet natalie. “good news and possibly bad news,” the physician said with a small smile. stan frowned at natalie, who avoided his gaze. how could this jerk joke about his wife’s health?

“the good news?” he asked, his tone short.

“the good news is that your wife did have a mild case of influenza, but it has mostly passed and she has nothing to worry about. death isn’t in her immediate future.”

“and the ‘possibly bad news?’”

“oh. did you want to tell him, mrs. mentes?”

natalie looked up, startled, and nodded. the physician nodded and bade them goodbye.

confused, stan watched as his wife wobbled closer to him on uncertain legs.

“ah. i’m apparently two months pregnant?”

her words took a moment to register, and he blinked. “oh. pregnant.”

she peered up at him. “is that — do you not —?”

taken aback by her unspoken insinuation that he did not want the child, he gripped her shoulders. “no! no, i’m so happy. i — there’s no one else i would ever ask to be a parent with,” he whispered to her, pushing their foreheads together. she sniffled, her hands clasping his.

“te amo, hoy y manana,” he murmured; pressing his lips to her nest of beautiful auburn hair.

“ay, te amo tambien, supongo,” she said back.

he squeezed her closer.

they had just begun this portion of their life, only to see it end — and welcome a new one.

it’s hot outside. anyways, the first thing that came to mind was probably the two of them (because they’re overthinking morons) (mostly natalie) (but also mostly stan) mistaking her pregnancy for a v serious case of the flu. bc theyre idiots lbr here. dank u for the ask noemi! much love ♡♡

So you’ve got this typical story about an average kid right? Only, surprise surprise, he actually turns out to be more than average. See, one day, when he was just minding his own business, he’s suddenly told that he is this super-being who has to save the world from evil. Again, it’s your basic tropes all lined up and ready to go.

Only here’s the thing.

The kid?

He runs away.

And this isn’t just a “Oh, I need some time to think but I’ll come around in a day or two and fulfill my destiny.”

No this kid is gone. For the first time in his life, this kind and generous kid makes a selfish decision. He knows what the consequences are. He knows what’s at stake. He knows that lives are going to be in danger. And he still chooses to run away.

Things take an abrupt turn when he gets into an accident and he ends up in a coma. He wakes up years later and guess what? Him running away from his duties that day? Yeah it kind of caused the entire world to be plunged into chaos. This kid, this kid, is now responsible for thousands upon thousands of deaths.

At the age of twelve, this kind pacifist single-handedly becomes a mass-murderer by association. All because he ran away.

A few older teenagers find him and immediately help him. They don’t think much of it. They’re used to helping out anyone they can. After all, the war has killed people they love, family, friends. So they help this kid before they even realize that he’s destined. And this kid, this kid isn’t even fully aware of just how many people he inadvertently killed.

Until they go to the ‘city’ where he was from. He doesn’t understand why they’re so worried but when he gets there…he gets it. There is no ‘city’. Not anymore. It’s abandoned ruins lined with skeletons—his friends, his family. He finds his father’s corpse. He finds signs of a struggle. Everyone he knew is dead. And there are so many more. Hundreds. Thousands. All dead. All because of him.

He’s a good kid, a great kid. He wouldn’t hurt a fly.

And he led to thousands of deaths.

All because he ran away.

And this entire story is just the first three episodes of Avatar: The Last Airbender. (Four if you count borrowing some information from The Storm.)

Avatar showed all of this in just three episodes. Actually it showed this and more. Because this is just one character’s story and they introduced us to half a dozen major characters, each with stories just as, if not even more, tragic than this one.

Long story short, we always talk about how amazing Avatar is for the representation and art and animation and music and morals but we rarely ever talk about how amazing the story is. The horrible irony that Aang, a pacifistic monk who was kind and generous to everyone he met, inadvertently led to thousands of people dying in a century-long war—it’s one of the greatest stories that I’ve ever heard of. This doesn’t even include all of the other consequences we see throughout the series—villages being destroyed, families living in fear, people being dragged off to concentration camps in the middle of the night, kids turning into terrorists, refugees being forced to walk thousands of miles to get to a safe haven, the injuries, the fear, the trauma. (And this is all just in Book One. Don’t even get me started on the other two.) It’s hard to say that it’s all Aang’s fault but his disappearance certainly had a huge impact on the horrible things that occurred.

And the worst part is?

He knew.
