Don’t Drop the Towel

I was encouraged to write this in a discord chat with @kmomof4 and @xhookswenchx - as a matter of fact, @xhookswenchx helped with the dialogue in this, so she’s sort of a co-author. The idea came to me because I watched the movie The Outsiders with my eleven year old today because we had just read the book. There’s a scene in it where Rob Lowe almost loses his towel, and I was shocked, obviously watching it with my kid. I did NOT remember that scene. You can go here for a gif of that moment: https://images.app.goo.gl/nxuoq42iEwiaj52p9

In the gif, you will see that Tom Cruise blocks the view of Rob Lowe getting out of the shower. Anyways, we had a ridiculous discord chat about it, and I ended up writing this 800 word crack drabble about it. It’s set in 3B.

Rating: T (for obvious reasons)

“Wait a second, he’s not answering the phone in his room -”

Regina rolled her eyes. “You really think the one handed wonder knows how a phone works?” She held up her massive keyring - the same one that Emma remembered Henry swiping from her office two years ago. “Ah hah, this one should work.”

“Don’t you think that’s an invasion of privacy?”

“Do you want a place to meet away from Henry or not, Ms. Swan? My sister isn’t planning on giving up any time soon, and I’d rather figure out a way to defeat her before my son gets hurt.”

“At least knock,” Snow sighed ,reaching between the arguing women to rap her knuckles on the door.

They all paused and listened. Nothing.

“Maybe he’s out … pirating or something,” David suggested.

“Seriously, Dad?”

“Oh look,” Regina exulted, “it’s unlocked anyway.”

Emma should have known that they were in trouble when she heard the sound of running water. Her dad and Regina were right in front of her, so her view was blocked at first, but she heard the sound of a shower curtain being pulled back, then Regina’s sly “well” that was full-on Evil Queen, and her father’s shout of “what the hell!”

The words were out of Emma’s mouth before her brain even processed anything: “Dad, move!”

Her dad spun around to face her with an incredulous look on his face just as her mother said, “yeah David, move.” But neither of those demanded her attention quite like a shocked Killian trying to cover himself and grab his towel with only one hand. He managed it with surprising (and unfortunate) grace that had Emma muttering “damn it” under her breath. Why did her dad and Regina get the front row seats?

Killian then almost dropped the small towel as he climbed out of the deep, claw foot tub (bless you, Granny!), and Emma got a nice eyeful of his ass.

“But some damn clothes on!” David thundered.

“What the hell are you all doing in my room!” Killian shouted back.

“Why are you still naked? My wife and my daughter are present!”

“They don’t seem to mind too much,” Regina muttered under her breath.

“Dad,” Emma said, unable to contain herself, “he has a point.”

David blinked when he saw how blatantly his daughter was staring. “Why are you showering with the door wide open?” he yelled at the pirate.

“Because it’s my room, and I didn’t expect an audience!”

“I brought eclairs! Oh my!” Granny’s sudden appearance with refreshments was punctuated by the crashing of the tray she was carrying. “Oh my.”

David threw up his hands in frustration. “Do you plan on letting every woman in Storybrooke see you naked?”

Emma was expecting an innuendo from that one and was shocked when Killian became indignant instead.

“Only the ones who burst into my room without permission!”

Then his eyes landed on Emma. She didn’t even attempt to hide her admiration for what she saw, and a smirk for the first time flirted with the corner of his mouth.

“Of course,” Killian said, his voice slipping into that bravado she was used to, “if the lady likes what she sees … “

It wasn’t lost on Emma that he said “lady,” singular, despite the fact that Regina, Granny, and her mother - God, her mother! - were all clearly enjoying the view.

“Well we’re leaving now,” David growled, turning and giving Snow a shove towards the door.

Regina followed with a sardonic chuckle and arch of her brow. Granny was on her knees gathering up eclairs as fast as she could.

“I’m sorry, Captain Jones.”

“Don’t be, Lady Lucas,” Killian assured, but his eyes were on Emma, and he no longer seemed embarrassed or put out.

With her eyes glued to the floor, Granny rushed out too until only Emma stood there. Killian’s hand still clutched the towel which hung deliciously low on his hips, and Emma for the first time noticed he was trying to hide his stump behind his back. His mouth, however, was turned up in a full on smirk now, and his eyebrows were dancing.

“Does the lady like what she sees?”

Emma raked him slowly with her gaze, a smile slowly filling her face. “Yeah. She does.”

“Emma!” David yelled, and she jumped like a teenager. She turned to see her father standing there with his hands on his hips.

“Coming, Dad,” she said, her gaze lingering a bit longer on the towel clad pirate.

“Don’t even think about dropping that towel, Hook,” her father growled.

“I make no promises,” Killian quipped.

Emma leaned over her father’s shoulder to see if Killian would make good on his subtle threat, but her dad slammed the door. She scowled and her father arched his brows at her, his arms crossed over his chest in what she had come to think of his “dad pose.”

“Well, it is his room.”

When the whumpee looked over from their spot sprawled on the cold floor, they could see a pair of boots. They flinched, expecting to feel them crashing down on their ribs, on their ankle, their head.

“Please…” they whimper, curling in on themselves, “No more… I’ll be good…”

“Oh my god,” the boots move backwards, then disappear, replaced by arms slipping underneath their broken form.

His head feel limply over their arm, the room spinning with the motion of being lifted into the air. “Hey, Hey, stay awake okay? Just a little bit longer and we’ll be out of here.”

Another voice joined the first. “Honey?” They felt a hand in theirs, holding on tightly but gently, “Can you squeeze my hand? Just squeeze it tight okay?”

They did, even though it seemed to cost the last shred of energy they had. How cruel, to be kept awake and alert through everything that was happening, when sleep was so easily within reach?

They were lain down on what felt like a cot, and they were poked and prodded and questioned and jabbed and pricked and it was quickly too much. “Please, just let me sleep…” they croaked, trying uselessly to bat away the doctors and nurses surrounding them. “You can in a moment, just a moment.” the nurse said, and they could have cried if they had the energy.

Finally, after what must have been hours, they were finally allowed to sleep. A blanket was tucked up to their chin, and a little needle pierced their arm, and the most lovely sensation filled their whole body. A heavy feeling seemed to sink into their bones, pain disappearing into the blackness of sleep.

Got some thoughts and feelings about this little bit…

Hades grabs him by the hair, and look where Killian’s hand goes: immediately to cover Hades’, like that’s his instinct. The point of grabbing someone’s hair is to control them. The point of doing what Killian does there is to take away your attacker’s control as much as you can. They’ve grabbed your hair, and if you try and pull their hand away, your hair will get pulled with it, and you’ll get hurt. But if you grab their hand instead, you can keep it in place. They can’t pull, so they can’t hurt you. Still not a great situation to be in, but better than the alternative.

This is right after the part where he tosses the chisel aside and refuses to be Hades’ pawn. Like, every single detail in this scene is Killian refusing to let Hades control him.

His immediate, instinctive response to being controlled is to try and lessen it, to reclaim it as much as he can. It’s clearly a move he’s used before, so much so that it’s become instinct, and it’s totally in-character. Always a fighter, always fighting to stay in control, even when he’s bloodied and battered.
