Uh… the fight scene in 3B with Blackbeard!

B….. bless you, B.

I just rewatched it (high on tramadol) and it’s still SO. FUCKING. GLORIOUS.

That glimpse into just how notorious Captain Hook is.

I mean, instead of hearing the stories, we get to see him in action.

He’s been out of the game for a while, and there’s clearly been whispers and rumours that he’s gone soft, he’s no longer the cutthroat captain of legend-

And with him in a state of believing he has nothing to fall back on (since losing Emma) but his reputation, he has to prove he’s still formidable. He’s still the notorious captain Hook….

and he’s come for his ship.

Balls of fucking steel, marching onto the Jolly Roger single handedly, demanding the captain of this big fucking crew to step forward.

And not a single one of them dares approach.

BUT THEN

IN ONE OF MY TOP ENTRANCES IN ONCE HISTORY

BLACKBEARD APPEARS.

And he’s not some two-bit pirate either.

This guy’s built a reputation too.

And Hook knows it.

I love the little dance around each other they do in the beginning.

Both giving a couple of experimental taps and clashes with their swords, sizing the other up, finding their feet….

Because they know this is going to be a challenge.

And they love it.

The way they both laugh as they prepare, not willing to show weakness but excitement at the anticipation of fighting to the death.

AND FIGHT THEY DO.

It’s an equal battle. Blackbeard knocks Hook, Hook stuns Blackbeard-

They’re matched for strength and both of them aren’t shy of fighting dirty either.

The crowd knows it too.

They wait silently in anticipation until the battle begins, and the cheers are loud. They’re loving it just as much as the two captains are.

But it begins to get serious.

I love it when Killian cuts the sail, stopping the audience from seeing.

I see it as a metaphor for “show’s over, it’s just got personal”.

(And the groan of protest from the crowd is funny too.)

It’s gone further than just proving who’s got the biggest bravado.

It’s hitting that ‘to the death’ stage.

Why?

Because Blackbeard is questioning Hook’s abilities, purpose, reputation and intentions.

Has he gone soft?

The whole point of this episode was to show how he was struggling to go back to the life he’d lived for centuries now the woman he loves has gone.

It’s not just about proving to Blackbeard that he can still be is the same dreaded pirate all must fear….

he’s trying to prove it to himself.

This silhouette choice was fucking beautiful and deserves a mention.

Kudos to the director for this. (and this whole fight scene tbh)

A true swashbuckling scene with great cinematic choices.

Alas, fighting dirty pays off for Hook and he overpowers Blackbeard…

Who’s more than ready to take his death sentence with pride.

Another sign of how and why these two have become such staples in the pirating world.

Both show no fear or weakness and aren’t afraid to die.

They’re ready to go out brave and with honour.

But Ariel soon throws a spanner in the works by revealing their true purpose for showing up.

Prince Eric.

He’s not there and they need Blackbeard alive.

Killian’s reputation and purpose is once again on the line.

And Blackbeard relishes in this being a ‘rescue mission for some wench’.

GOD, THIS WHOLE ACT WAS SO FUCKING GOOD.

THANK YOU FOR LETTING ME REVISIT IT.

[Send me a scene and i’ll give my interpretation of it!]
