Drones has always felt like a very raw album from Matt, especially knowing what has happening both for him at the time and where the world was at the time, both of which fed into its concept. From all of that, Mercy in particular has always felt like a very desperate cry out after the concepts protagonist comes to grips with everything happening within the system they were trapped in. That being said, while I get what it seems to be putting down, never has it felt more terrified and primal than it does listening to it now. The last chorus feels very poignant, like something someone would drop to their knees screaming in the face of fear and hate we have in front of us:

"Show me mercy from the powers that be

Show me mercy from the gutless and mean

Show me mercy from the killing machines

Show me mercy, can someone rescue me?"

As strong as i am trying to be as everything happens and as i try to tighten up with my community, deep down this really hits where I am feeling on the inside right now.

i hate to say it Museheads but im actually incredibly vibing with The 2nd Law. Madness is a really bizarre track but i otherwise love how scattered and all over the place the album is. was rly not expecting to hear songs like Save Me where other bandmates sing but they do excellently and just add to that vibe of the album being a bit everywhere at once.

also the cover is so pretty -w- id love to have it on CD

I wasn't active in online Muser spaces in 2012, so I didn't really follow whatever fan discourse was going on at the time. So funnily enough I was in the "Madness is just fine as a song, you guys are just mean" camp

Muse at Abbey Road Studios

I went to Abbey Road to see the famous Abbey Road studios today. Yes, I walked the Beatles crosswalk too ;) But read on!

I found a bit of Muse history there, for those interested!

Part of Origin of Symmetry was recorded down at Abbey Road, after all! Specifically in Studio 2.

Muse started writing the album whilst on tour for Showbiz in 2000, recording parts of it (high on mushrooms) with Dave Bottrill at Ridge Farm Studios in Surrey. These ended up almost becoming demos, as when the band began mixing them with John Cornfield after the tour was over, they weren’t satisfied with the mixes and ended up having to lay them down them again.

That’s when the group trouped down to London to rerecord the few songs they had at the time, New Born, Plug In Baby, Bliss and Darkshines. They also wrote and recorded the rest of the album, in Studio 2, which is Abbey Road’s most famous recording room. It wasn’t Muse’s first time at Abbey Road: they’d done a filmed live set there in 1999.

The album was rerecorded at Abbey Road in full in 2000 with John Leckie, who worked with Muse on Showbiz as well.

Muse of course revisited the studio and master mixes of Origin of Symmetry in 2021 for the 20th anniversary RemiXXes, and would go on to do two more sessions there: a second in June 2001, and the more famous 2008 sessions for Channel 4 in the UK.

2008.

2021: remiXXed, revisited, reminisced on.

Muse also tracked drums for songs on Will Of The People at Abbey Road in Studio 3, and here is Matt and his Manson sitting on the doorstep outside the studios.

They have a little badge honouring Muse as one of the famous artists to have recorded at Abbey Road. Made my little Muser heart swell with pride to see it :’) ❤️
