i’m very normal about blue beetle. the movie was great btw u should like go see it or whatever
hey idk if you've seen but the final trailer for the Blue Beetle movie dropped!!
FINALLY WATCHED IT (I was lazy)
IM SO EXCITED!!! It looks great! I'm loving Jaime's characterization it's very comic accurate, I'm also very excited to see the family aspect played out, it's one of my favorite things about Jaime.
And the family stuff is honestly what really sells Jaime as a Mexican Hero so I'm glad they seem to be an integral part for the movie I'm so so glad
MY SUPER AWESOME THOUGHTS ON BLUE BEETLE 06
Finally finished it! I enjoyed every minute of it man, it took me about a week? Anyway, god I love Jaime so much, he was a fantastic main character.
I loved seeing his struggles as they were so on the nose of what someone in his position WOULD think. The fear of it all overshadowing any moment of "huh that was cool." God and just...those first issues were heart wrenching. He was gone for a whole year....his family's reactions OUUGHH and the flashback of how he lost said year. JAIME ON THE FLOOR REMEMBERING HOW AFRAID HE WAS TO DIE ALONE ☹☹☹ I loved the themes the run dealt with, the themes of death and what does duty mean to you. It was a super interesting read and one of my favorite things to see superheroes handle
Anyway...CHARACTERS, Again, Jaime fufilled his main character role so well, I don't think anyone overshadowed him. And he was too fucking relatable my god....like I can't even believe how much I could see myself in him. I really liked the fact that they never forgot to highlight Jaime's normality and the mundane things we wants and thinks of. Being characterized as kind of a nerd AND becoming a geek too because of Ted's notes....its so nice to see nerd Mexican rep 🙏🙏 I also found it charming that hes so small lol now that's fucking accurate. And the way he spoke was just, timeless. So on par with younger gen dialogue I thought he was so funny.
And moving on to the struggle to find his own identity in being a legacy hero without ever meeting the predecessors....that whole last issue was painful but in a good way. I really enjoyed it.
BRENDA AND PACO, I absolutely adored them, Paco only knowing Spanglish hes just like me fr AND BRENDA I really wish they showed her off more with her aikido but I also loved that she was the brains for a bit. And I loved that the friend group was well rounded! You could see how all three of them cared and loved each other it never felt like someone was shoved aside. And I loved that they were so ride or die and that Jaime immediately was like "omg guys there's a voice in my head" and they went "no fucking way what's it saying?"
JAIME'S FAMILY ☹☹☹☹ also so accurate I adored them... I liked that with all their love, they also weren't afraid to let Jaime know when he was fucking up without it being a whole big mess. Again, very accurate to keep the family unit so close but not afraid to call out shit within the circle. And his and Milagro's relationship...oml my brother and I fr
PEACEMAKER Loved that Jaime kept trying to make him his mentor and he WAS even if he denied it. I really liked the role he played here, I think it was a good thing to expose Jaime to the lows of cape life out the gate. The kinds of thoughts Khaji da would put in his head, the brutality of the Reach, and the choices he needed to make, I'm glad Peacemaker came out the gate to let him know the hard parts so Jaime was able to triumph through the bad.
HECTOR, NADIA, AND TRACI, I actually really Hector and Nadia! It was cool again to round out the cast with only Latinos and letting them be the guys in the chair ah I loved it. Hector was so goofy and I loved Nadia's "eccentricity." I wish Traci got to do more here or at least get to have more dialogue outside of her relationship with Jaime. I loved that she was the confident one in the relationship and that you can tell she's having fun with what she does. I'd like to read more of her own stories because in this run I felt she kindaaa bordered "manic pixie dream girl" but she also wasn't there enough for a final answer. My favorite moment with her was at Jaime's family reunion and she had all the babies that was cute.
And real quick, loved the rep of the Posse, they were allies but also did some shady shit and Jaime had to be like "hmm I'm friends with some strange people" just like my family fr 🙏🙏 (FORLEGALREASONSTHATSAJOKE)
ALSO THAT WHOLE ISSUE WITH THE TITANS WAS HILARIOUS I LOVED IT SO MUCH
Favorite moments in the whole run; every time Brenda called a girl hot, "YOU CAN'T CALL ME PENDEJO, YOU'RE VANILLA", Paco beating dentist Jaime, all the conversations Jaime had with his parents, Jaime kicking ass without Scarab and saying "Blue Beetles don't need powers!", Traci watching Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Anubis and Devil Dog lmao, "are any of you old enough to drink", and of course, "one behind this? Rich white guy, just saying."
The ART!!!!!! I ADORE HOW FUN BLUE BEETLE IS TO LOOK AT AHHH I LOVED HIS DESIGN AND HOW THEY DREW HIS EXPRESSIONS AND THE COLORS AND ALL THE DIFFERENT PEOPLE SURROUNDING HIM! THEY LOOK LIKE US, JAIME LITERALLY LOOKS LIKE MY BROTHER IN HIGH SCHOOL AND I LITERALLY HAVE A PIC WHERE I LOOK EXACTLY LIKE MILAGRO. IT WAS SO MUCH FUN TO ABSORB
I loved this run so much, definitely would and will be rereading it, 9/10
One last thing
I fucking loved that Jaime made this face all the damn time cuz I also make this face all the time so true bestie
Blue Beetle (2006) has my favourite Blue Beetle armour design ever. nothing else has surpassed it imo. the shade of blue?? the face plate design?? the lightly glowing yellow and orange eyes?? the white circles on his legs and sides?? the flat fingertips?? it's so good i love it so much
A thing I really love about the bold blue color choice, is how it contrasts with most El Paso background. Most of the time, the city and the people are in warm tones and/or neutrals and desaturated colors.
So having the Blue Beetle suit be so bold with it straight black and bright blue, the contrasting orange eyes with hints of white throughout? It says.....something
Jaime "i have no idea what i'm doing and i'm stressed the hell out A LOT but god dammit i'm gonna try my best" Reyes
He's so great, thats all you can ask for from a character ❤❤❤
blue beetle (06) is SO good, you're in for such a treat. underrated as hell. legit one of my favourite comic book runs ever it's so excellent, the intro into comics jaime DESERVED
I'm already so in love with it. I adore the way they speak in this comic, its so natural and real. I love Jaime's relationship with his family and friends.
I love that everyone is so snarky its my favorite thing ever lol. I love how much Jaime emphasizes that, hes out of his element and has no idea what's going on yet everyone flocks to him anyway lol
I find the setting really easy to slide into as well! Its quite grounded which I like, its nice to have a home and familiar area to touch base. It adds so much to the fact that he's Jaime Reyes first.
I'm so
also in terms of Jaime content, he's gonna be getting a new comic series called "Blue Beetle: Graduation Day"!! i'm REALLY hoping it's good
I'm using this ask as an excuse to update y'all that I'm on issue 9 of Blue Beetle (06) and I'm absolutely in love with it, anyway
LETS GOOO JAIME CONTENT, LETS HOPE ITS GOOD AND CARRIED THAT STREAK TO A GOOD MOVIE AS WELL
the struggle of being a Jaime fan of both the YJ cartoon and comic versions who doesn't ship b/uepulse and it being infuriatingly difficult to find fan content for him that DOESN'T involve Bart in some way. as someone who also adores Bart: Jaime exists and is interesting independently of a fan favourite white boy he's friends with in exactly ONE piece of comic book media, you guys!! hell, he's more of a main character in s2 of YJA than Bart is, but you'd never guess that going off the fandom
I totally understand that! I first saw Jaime in Brave and the Bold I think, and I was like "NO WAY MEXICAN SUPERHERO??" And then I watched Yj and fell madly in love with him.
Overall, I'm more so a Yj fan above other DC media, but its completely valid for one interpretation to overshadow everything.
I'm more a marvel person so sometimes, the overexposure of the MCU has dampened a...lot of things so I sympathize with you for sure lmao.
And yes! Bart is a comfort for me but I see how many characters get forever linked to their "designated white friend."
As I'm Mexican myself, I want Jaime content that focuses on HIM, its a shame what a double edged sword a cartoon can be
OK IM PUTTING THESE ALL TOGETHER TO EXPRESS MY OWN THOUGHTS ON BART N JAIME IN SEASON 2 AND EXPLORE EACH ANON'S THOUGHTS (They're lovingly numbered and color coded ❤)
This is like a goddamn essay I'll present the information and tell my thoughts at the end.
Anon 1 brings up the point of Bart telling Jaime about his involvement with the Reach invasion. And the phrasing Bart uses is very guilt trippy and unfair to Jaime, despite Bart having the baggage to back it.
And I agree with it being a fucked up thing to do! And I want to preface that this isn't like, "how dare they!" Kind of a thing. Its incredibly interesting plot wise and character wise for Bart and I love it a lot. Characters doing gray things is my favorite. Anyway, in terms of their friendship, this isn't a great start lmao. I see it as Bart thinking this is a logical step in the plan. Calling attention to the problem, no sugarcoating, and let's get this shit done. If it hurts his feelings a bit, not his problem. Of course, Jaime had more going on than just that, he hadn't even had Scarab a full year and Tye goes missing. It just piled on Jaime. So yeah, fucked up move but I don't hate it.
Anon 2 brings up how Bart continues to mess with Jaime it seems. Its not really a time to be cheeky Bart, but he does anyway. Which does hurt Jaime, you can see it on his face.
Again, fucked up but I like it. That moment, definitely felt more intentional than the last one. Couldn't have chosen a worst time tho. Its not like Bart WANTS to make him feel bad, hes just not being careful with his words. And that's just a Bart thing, not really a "I'm doing this specifically to Jaime."
Anon 3 brings their perspective on the duality of their relationship in season 2 and how their friendship doesn't just come out of nowhere and where it leads us later.
And this is a fantastic discussion, because its true. Its very easy to get wrapped up in Bart's passive aggressive attitude towards Jaime, especially because for a long time the most vocal the fandom didn't acknowledge it. But you also have to remember that, he still wanted to make sure Jaime was OK whenever there was a battle. If it was half motivated by future saving reasons, so be it. But for as much as there's passive aggressive Bart, there's also Bart who just cares about his teammate. And Jaime, despite being low energy and mostly being exasperated with Bart, does appreciate him. I mentioned this last time and anon 3 mentioned that right now, Jaime is kind of alone in his thoughts. Tye doesn't know he's a hero AND he's gone. Jaime has all sorts of anxieties about Scarab and Bart's intel only pushes him even more away from the others. Is that slight manipulation to lead him to Bart? Yes. Is it a terrible thing? Not entirely.
They're casual. Jaime likes his desert self portrait, Bart seems genuinely worried for him on the Reach ship. Is it a super deep relationship, no its too soon, but there is a foundation.
I still believe their friendship starts off with not the right intentions, but that doesn't make their ENTIRE relationship bad. And I like how anon 3 describes it with "complex" and that its OK that it starts off in this way.
My problem is majority fandom treatment for the longest time in not exploring these nuances in their relationship and simplifying down to the point that they're both ooc. Bart is not just a goofy idiot with personal space problems and Jaime isn't his handler. Growing up seeing content as season 2 was coming out and after, that was how it seemed people chose to explore their relationship (again this is because the fandom wanted a new birdflash, so they tried to fit Bart and Jaime in a mold not made for them. Birdflash also gets some bad interpretation but not near what happened with bl u/e pl us/ e i think).
I DON'T REALLY KNOW IF MY THOUGHTS ARE COMING OUT RIGHT? BASICALLY I AGREE WITH ALL 3 ANONS ON SOME LEVEL. BART N JAIME'S FRIENDSHIP HAS A LOT OF COMPLEXITIES THATS ITS IMPORTANT NOT TO GO ON EITHER EXTREMITY OF "BART SECRETLY HATES JAIME" AND "THEY WERE BESTIES OF ALL TIME ALWAYS." (I THINK THEY HAVE AN INTERESTING RELATIONSHIP TO EXPLORE THEM BECOMING FRIENDS, BUT I STILL PERSONALLY DO NOT SEE ROMANTIC INCLINATION)
I hope I got everything out right? I adore Bart and Jaime as two separate characters and they're fantastic to explore. And I want to thank all these anons I've gotten recently to allow me to explore these 2 more in depth. Very interesting conversation to be had all around!
Greg confirming recently that Jaime and Tye have known each other from a very young age (which has honestly ALWAYS been the vibe they've given off) and that from their perspective they've been friends since forever is like all i've thought about recently. they are CHILDHOOD BEST FRIENDS, your honour!!!
They're so..... I need to see them more. Season 2 isn't enough I need them to hug on screen
fellas is it fruity to be so stressed that you dream about your best friend because you just want some solace in the utterly shit situation you're in. is it mlm to be so goddamn excited to finally see him again and know he's okay that you literally forget he doesn't know you're blue beetle and get up out of your chair with a big smile while saying his name and have to do the dorkiest fucking save in history so he doesn't suspect anything
jaime says that scarab is slowly learning more inane human customs and what they mean and bart's like "oh you don't say? does he know what this means yet?" and just. flips off jaime's back
Bart whenever Jaime turns around
(Scarab totally sees it, informs Jaime, Jaime doesn't give a fuck)
love that you pointed out how Traci followed Scarab's line of thinking in that one scene from s3! underrated moment imo. especially how Jaime's very casual reaction implies this isn't a new thing. no one else in the show besides Jaime has ever really humanized Scarab like that, and Bart specifically is famously bad at noticing when Jaime is talking to him (side note i also love the idea he just. doesn't like Scarab hjasgfjs like, they can't directly talk to each other, but there's AnimosityTM)
You mentioned Bart and I'm trying so hard not to go on about him. Anyway, Scarab and Traci is a really interesting aspect to think about. I think most of the season 1+2 cast don't like to bring up Khaji Da, he was the link of the bad during the Reach invasion. So Traci, not being on the team at that time thus having no personal experience with the bad Scarab has done, can come and accept this part of Jaime differently.
Like you said, I do think Traci is the only one who acknowledges Scarab like this. Acknowledges that Khaji Da speaks for themselves and has his own desired action. Doesn't treat the Jaime and Scarab conversation as humor on Jaime's part like the other jokes of people thinking Jaime is a freak, but on Scarab and his violent nature being shut down by this normal guy.
I wish we got to see them get together because I think Traci getting a clue about Scarab's voice and actually TALKING to Jaime about it would've been a mini catalyst for Jaime's crush
(And absolutely I adore when we can touch on the fact that Bart is kind of a bitch and has a cynical mean side to him. So him not acknowledging Scarab at all or even misrepresenting whatever Scarab might've said is funny. Sorry Jaime this has nothing to do with you I got beef with your back)
since it seems a Blue13 kick is happening here right now: i may be reading too much into it, but i think it's so interesting how during the ep when Traci is literally having her insecurities thrown in her face, there isn't a single mention of insecurity in her relationship with Jaime. not even one. potentially implying that despite all her doubts about herself, she KNOWS she has no reason to worry about that, that in her heart of hearts she truly feels SECURE with him?? bye i can't take this
NO YES I LOVE PUPPET JAIME IN THAT EPISODE!
Traci was only uncomfortable because it was a fake version of Jaime and it was creepy lookin, but Puppet Jaime said not one bad thing.
My favorite is when he's actually the only one motivating Traci, the other puppets belittle her but Jaime goes "I believe in you Traciiii." And yeah he's still not her ally here but the fact remains that not even Nabu can twist Traci's perception of Jaime.
Jaime is too good of a boyfriend for a fucking Order God to successfully manipulate a girl into leaving his house lmao
oh my god finally ... someone else who understands how big-brained and underrated blue13 is. like i know we haven't got a ton of them together on screen, but listen. what we've got of them has been really cute (jaime giving traci heart-eyes when she safely brought down the helicopter in s3ep16?? fucking adorable), and their dynamic has so much potential! they're both different yet SUCH similar shades of weird, and that's their normal. and like you said, that's just very sweet
Thank you! And absolutely dude, I know they're not super popular for the cartoon yj fandom since they're a season 3 addition, but they're so cute!
I really like what you said about "different yet SUCH similar shades of weird" that's what I really adore about them. Jaime's whole mess is tech based (alien tech but tech nonetheless) and Traci is magic based. Yet its the same struggles of communication with another being, loss of control (illusion of control ba dum tiss), and experimenting with their scope of power.
They both also have issues when trusting themselves, we don't touch on Jaime's ever again after season 2 (which, don't get me started) so seeing Traci is also someone with self image issues, for them to be in healthy of a relationship as they are is sweet! They don't let that stuff get in the way and genuinely care for one another.
So different yet so similar.
jaime would SO be a nervous wreck about traci being doctor fate part-time. knowing what nabu did to zee's dad for like a decade + his own trauma from being on-mode?? dude would be so stressed at first. i definitely agree he'd respect her decision and think she can handle herself, but he's jaime. he cares about her, so he's gonna worry. i am CONVINCED he insisted on being there when she put the helmet on for the first time, and i like to think he tries to be there WHENEVER she takes it on or off
RIGHT THAT JUST SEEMS LIKE THE KIND OF GUY HE'D BE, Boyfriend or not he worries so much about everything (he just like me fr) that he looks out for his loved ones by going the extra mile.
And I find it to be a really bittersweet scene of him being there when she puts on the helmet ☹☹ its only for little while jaime....jaime has such a cute pout though I don't think Nabu would be able to fight Traci
