❝ I doubt you would be familiar with the Kamukura Project at the time. Thanks to its unethical nature, the academy went to great lengths to hide its existence and even among the involved it was on a need-to-know basis. When the video making my existence public was leaked, the most logical course of action among the involved would have been to dispose of any incriminating evidence, and among the law enforcement, it would also be of their best interest to keep the investigation under wraps in order to avoid tipping the involved. Even now you may see similar behavior within the Future Foundation.  ❞ Naegi Makoto was now in a position that he couldn’t allow himself to be naïve, and Kamukura exposed how things work to the young adult. The general public would never know the true extent of the project, the same way that they weren’t aware to all the details and the true scope of the Tragedy itself or what transpired in that school shelter. Even so, why Naegi would make a point to stop and find information about the Kamukura Project at that time? It wasn’t something that a teenage boy would want to focus at the time.
❝ The society had been inexorably reaching apoptosis.  Slowly at first, but every passing year with increasing speed. Even without Enoshima’s interference, it was likely that your generation would witness the fall. But it wasn’t enough for her, she wanted complete and utter destruction as abrasive and violent as possible so despair would take deep roots and endure throughout centuries. It would become seeds to reshape the entire structure of mankind.❞a world which despair becomes the norm sounded trite. An existence of pain and self-destruction wasn’t something sustainable and would eventually lead mankind to possible extinction. ❝ For you, it doesn’t seem to have any everlasting effects, but for someone with analytical prowess can predict all the ramification of even the smallest actions: the ripple effect of her influence would be unparalleled. Even interrupted, her name will down the History and the world will never be the same.  ❞

{ 真実 } As much as people always tried to keep things under wraps, he knew how well that ended up. Even before the student council was attacked, rumors were constantly flying. It was that easy to scoop up gossip on the latest happenings between people and places. Back then, Makoto had thought only a bit of it, chalking it up to just the usual pokings of tabloids and stuff, but now...ugh. To think that Kamukura was more or less right and people would willingly ignore stuff like this. Now, whenever his coworkers tried to get cagey in their reports, it irritated him to no end. As Kirigiri dryly noted in a conversation to him once, it was their division that should get hand in determining what info is withheld if the situation required it, just as much as it was the higher-ups. How frustrating...

“It’s just egotistical of her. If that’s what she wanted - to cause a social uprising seemingly part of humanity’s declining course and criticizing us for personal flaws while in reality doing it just for her own selfish desires - then even if she got what she wanted, it wouldn’t be anything she expected. Or was it exactly what she saw coming? Maybe I’m giving her too much credit - I’m sick of everything she’s done to everyone, and even now I don’t know how much she’s planned before the execution.”

Should he really be this honest about it to Kamukura? Probably not. But it was something he had to get off his chest.

{ kamukura - kiboumukou‌ }:

Kamukura was sitting across the Future Foundation agent, his hands resting on his lap. The vessel for talent could tell that the security agents were just outside the room, even after being told to leave. It was a standard procedure measure – regardless of the true level of the threat, Naegi Makoto was too valuable to be left alone with the man so closely associated with Enoshima Junko. That young man defeated the true mastermind, the real face behind the Despair, and brought hope to the entire nation. That scrawny boy became one of the most influential personalities in the entire world overnight and was an important asset to the organization. Leaving the two of them unattended was already high risk and a possible breach of protocol. The Despair had surrendered himself over to Naegi, and during the past weeks he had not posed a threat or showed any sign of confrontation except for providing some replies that displeased the boy and the others around them, but was never outright threatening or adversary. Merely unsettling and highly upsetting with his uncaring responses.
❝ If you wish to understand, all you needed to do is to ask. ❞Izuru calmly stated. Despite being completely relaxed, he was collected. No unnecessary moves or stances, never slouching or sprawling like an ordinary person would do in that position. ❝There were a number of reasons why Enoshima Junko chose to place the blame on me, instead of showing the truth. On a lesser scale, it would conceal her real plans as it was the testing grounds for what would become the Mutual Killing. It would open precedent, and she wished to avoid that so electing me as the culprit would be convenient for her. ❞ Like he said, it was the least influential factor. ❝ Next up she needed to divert people’s focus on her. It was undesirable for her to draw attention at that point, and she wished to stay out of anyone’s suspicions until taking over the shelter. It was important to get a figurehead to get all the blame and make people believe to be the one behind the Tragedy until the time came. For that, too, I was her best candidate. It wouldn’t disrupt the hierarchy between her Ultimate Despairs, which was also highly desirable. ❞
❝ There were also smaller factors, but lastly among the main reasons is what I represent. I am the result of unethical and illegal experimentation, funded by the money diverted from the Reserve department. Instead of wasted in ordinary students, it was applied in developing artificial talent. It showed a lack of transparency and the corruption of the school’s manifesto of providing quality education and fostering hope. The one created to become the embodiment of the school’s ambitions, dubbed the Ultimate Hope, was the one who inflicted the despair. That would be enough to destroy the institution’s reputation and shatter the hope they so carefully constructed throughout all these years. It would throw both the school and the society in disarray, paving the way for her next move.❞

{ 真実 } If it sounded like trying to understand Kamukura was a sort of consolation for not being able to understand Enoshima (which it sort of did to some of his colleagues), that wasn’t Makoto’s intention. It was frustrating, being dragged along at other peoples’ discretion without the slightest inclination as to why. Monokuma did so again and again while they were trapped at the academy, dangling clues to keep them bouncing around for Enoshima’s amusement. Now, they were free, but at what cost? Even the Future Foundation was cagey around them at times, like now. He did understand their fear at the thought of losing an incredibly valuable asset, but that didn’t mean he’d enjoy the feeling of being babied like this. The energy in the air was anything but positive as a result.

“I suppose the pragmatic decisions do line up with logic...for her to be able to pull off the Tragedy, every detail had to be perfect, right?” The thing between him and the fabricated talent was literally just a table and some water set for them as they talked - even though Kamukura hasn’t physically provoked anyone since his capture, the thought of this guy just doing so any minute was extremely terrifying. Focus, Makoto. This is not like being caged in with a wild animal. You’re trying to make a friend. (Ha.)

“...I’ll admit I don’t recall much about the Kamukura Project. And not just because the Main Course was not given much information about it when it first happened.” Memory loss sure was a bitch at times, huh? Even now, he’s debating on whether or not he wants all those memories back. “With the files we have now, it’s both fitting and almost unrealistic at the same time. And even with that...if she was purely going for a social revolution with despair, this would be enough. I don’t understand. Why would she let some events fall into place with simple actions, but then painstakingly create events that don’t have as much of an initial impact in that despair? That sort of work is just inefficient!”
