RC, the remote controlled race car, is supposed to be a toy from the 1980s, so his packaging reflects the graphic style and "awesome features" of the period. Back in 2009, Jody and I had the great honor of being asked by Pixar and Disney Consumer Products to help create special packaging for the new Toy Story Definitive toy line, the most film-accurate replicas of the characters ever produced. Walt Disney's animated film "Bambi" (1942) has an exquisite title sequence—a series of delicate watercolor paintings of forest foliage in soft silhouettes. For our Craftsman-style "Bambi" lamp, Kevin used this imagery to for a unique stained glass shade. The shade consisted of green glass panels in front of metal cut-outs. Here's a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the design process of another of our stained glass lamps for Disney. This Craftsman-style "Bambi" lamp was designed by Kevin in 2006, and has an inset window in the base that reveals silhouettes of young Bambi and the Great Stag. The shade consisted of green glass panels in front of metal cut-outs of forest leaves and foliage. This "Pinocchio" stained glass lamp, designed by Jody, was released in 2006 in a small edition of only 750. This was part of a larger assortment of Disney collectible items created in the 'Arts & Crafts' style of the turn of the century. Built of richly stained wood and hammered metal, the lamp base supported a shade of wavy glass with metal cut-outs depicting scenes from the animated film based on the illustrations of artist Gustaf Tenggren. The metal cut-outs were designed in two separate layers positioned behind and in front of the glass resulting in dimensional "shadow scenes". It was an idea we came up with after seeing an Indonesian shadow puppet performance, and the results were stunning. "Winnie the Pooh lived in this enchanted forest under the name of Sanders..." Kevin reimagined Pooh's arboreal abode as a stained glass lamp for the Disney Catalog in 2005. For this piece, we tried a new approach for the glass shade. Instead of the "jigsaw puzzle" of glass pieces joined together, a single glass shape formed the mottled green canopy of Pooh's tree. It was the perfect lamp shade to accompany the soft, dreamy scene of the little bear sitting by his campfire. The tiny fire was a secondary light source, embedded with a cluster of small LEDs. You could illuminate the campfire, the tree, or both at the same time. Several people have asked for a comprehensive list of all the big figs that we have worked on together, to date. And so, here it is. This is also a fine place to mention that producing these sorts of items is always the result of a team effort. With few exceptions, these figures were sculpted by other artists, and the success of the character likeness depends as much on their ability, as on our concepts and guidance. We'd like to acknowledge the exceptionally talented artist Pete Emslie who drew splendid character turnarounds for many of our very best figures, and to Bo Tsai, our favorite sculptor in China. Over the years we've made a lot of wooden toys, usually as gifts for friends. Here's one Kevin made when he was a designer at Disneyland back in the 1990s . It's the "canary yellow gypsy cart" from the animated film "The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad". When the toy rolls across a flat surface, Cyril the horse pivots back and forth as if galloping through the English countryside. I wish I had Mary Poppins's skills in packing a carpetbag. Fitting St. Paul's Cathedral through the globe's 2-1/2" opening was challenging. The main portion with the big dome had to be put in at a sideways angle, and then the two smaller towers had to be attached afterwards, like assembling a ship in a bottle...and yes, of course I signed and dated the bottom before sealing it up! For recreating the St. Paul's Cathedral snow globe for MARY POPPINS RETURNS, I began by forming the cathedral from basswood pieces, matching the dimensions of the original 1964 film's prop in the Disney archive--which, by the way, was made by the legendary Rolly Crump.
