I went to the Ishida Sui exhibition since today was the last day. It's been a long time since I've thought back to those days.
To my days of serialization.
I wrote in the afterword of the final volume about how difficult of a time I had, But well, although that must have been true...
As I gazed upon the countless number of illustrations on display, a thought suddenly crossed my mind. "Oh, I was having fun back then."

I've stated before how "I've always thought about quitting," but I don't think there's ever been a time where I've thought, "I don't want to draw."
It's a subtle difference in nuance, but it makes me wonder.
Perhaps it wasn't the act of drawing manga that I hated, but rather being a mangaka that I detested.
I believed that the quintessential mangaka I created in my mind was someone who has to constantly work as a mangaka all the time or do stuff they don't really like as an adult, and so I did things that didn't suit myself at all.
That might have been what I had a hard time struggling with.
But I'm certain that drawing (...usually I'd dismiss my own art) was able to provide comfort to me at the time.
When I entered the admission area and saw the montage video, I felt overwhelmed, engrossed by the sight of my own art play across the screen. The vividly-coloured art that took painstaking effort for me to paint.
It made me think that at the time I was painting it, I must have been having fun.
This is really embarrassing for me to admit, but back when the exhibition was being planned,
I was so overwhelmed by the colossal amount of work I had to do, and coupled with the fact that I wasn't able to have an objective view of Tokyo Ghoul at the time, I was so lost in thought during the meetings that I felt very bad for the organizers involved in the project.
Once I've composed myself enough, I'd like to apologize to them for being so rude. Thank you so much for organizing this wonderful exhibition.

Lost in Translation: Choujin X chapter 1

Fun fact, I was planning to do fan translations for Choujin X with a scan group until it could get a simulpub release, though I didn’t expect it to get one from the very first chapter lol. I’m happy though since it means everyone can read it right away and it doesn’t mess up my schedule.

So instead I’ll be making comparison notes between the EN and JP text to supplement the official translation. I’m not doing this because the official TL is bad (I actually think it’s pretty solid and I hope it will maintain this quality) but because it’s inevitable for something to be lost in translation, and it’s nice to have that additional context for theory crafting and whatnot.

20210218 Jack Jeanne Creator Interview with Famitsu - Interview #2 with Towada Shin

The second Famitsu interview was with Towada Shin, who also oversaw the script writing for Jack Jeanne. This will be a summary of points to save time. Enjoy!

Novelization writer, script writer. Debut novel was “Love Typhoon” under a different name, Towada Shin [眞 versus the current シン]. In charge of the script for this game.

  • Ishida first approached Towada about Jack Jeanne long before its name was confirmed. But at the time, he was asking her for advice since she likes adventure and simulation games (before she was asked to join as a writer). At the time, Ishida was fascinated with the idea of multiple endings in a game since he’s depicting all kinds human relationships in his works.
  • Script production process: Towada and Ishida have meetings to faithfully reproduce Ishida’s world he dreamt up ⟶ Towada incorporates the details discussed during the meetings into the plot ⟶ Ishida checks and confirms ⟶ Towada writes script ⟶ Ishida makes corrections and Towada adjusts the text ⟶ Towada and a professional proofreader make final corrections
  • Since Ishida was responsible for so many tasks (overseeing the script, drawing the illustrations, three-view drawings, writing the lyrics, etc.), he would create a personality that best suited each task, from a cheerful music producer to an enlightened monk while working on the three-view drawings.
  • Jack Jeanne is the largest project Towada has ever worked on, with 20 volumes worth of text in one work. She was able to get support from JUMP j BOOKS (a subsidiary of Jump that provides novelized stories for manga). She got a professional proofreader; Nanao who wrote the novels for “The Promised Neverland” to write the sub-scenarios; and her former colleagues to gather materials and manage the script. A team effort.
  • When writing the characters and how they act, Towada had to think about the worries and suffering each character carries. Why does each character feel they way they do, how can their issues be resolved, and what is needed to resolve it?
  • Ishida asked Towada to avoid coming up with choices that could be considered objectively right or wrong, but to come up with interesting options whichever option the player chose instead, which she found difficult to do. Towada back then thought of JJ as a story about young male revues, but her perspective changed to that of a coming-of-age story.
  • If Towada had to recommend a route: all of them, but to pay attention to Kisa (the MC)’s route in particular since it’s the core of JJ. The main writer for that route was Ishida.
  • What to pay attention to in the demo version: everything (script, illustrations, music, dance, cast performances) as they are combined to create the world of Jack Jeanne. The rookie performance as well.
  • Some of her final words: Jack Jeanne is a story in which each person seeks salvation by performing in a world where it’s difficult to be rewarded.

I chatted with someone who attended the Ishida Sui exhibition, and I learned a lot of interesting stuff, especially regarding the 124 Q&As! She doesn’t remember everything, but I noted the new information down.

Q: Other characters in the story blush when they smile, but why is it that for Juuzou that portrayal doesn’t exist?

A: Juuzou doesn’t know how to smile in a way that makes his cheeks blush.

Q: How did you decide the names of the ghoul characters?

A: I decided based on whether the name sounds like it would fit the character, and for the 1st part of their name, by shiritori. (AyatoTouka→Kaneki)

Q: How did you choose your pen name Ishida Sui?

A: I like watermelon, and 1 part I took from my real name.

Q: When drawing characters, where do you start from? [I think I already posted this before, but I’ll include it just in case.]

A: I start from the upper left part of the head.

From the Q&A, it was also revealed that Towada Shin (the writer of the TG LNs and co-writer for Jack Jeanne) is siblings with Ishida???? Towada is the older sister and Ishida is the younger brother. I had to double check to make sure, and I found someone who went to the exhibition who confirmed it (X).

Ishida also mentioned that he thinks he resembles Kaneki.

Regarding the original TG manuscript, it was about Kaneki and the ghoul investigator Shinohara (so I was right about that one scene giving me Shinohara vibes!).

And to end on a bright note:

Q: I feel I will never encounter a work as wonderful as Tokyo Ghoul again. Do you have any goals going on forward as a mangaka?

A: To create a work that will overturn your feelings of never encountering a wonderful work like Tokyo Ghoul again.

Hanae Natsuki has an ACNH playthrough on his YT channel, and a good chunk of his island and the group games he plays with other streamers features Ishida’s paintings of Hanae lol. I honestly recommend watching it, a good chunk of his streams are subbed in English so it’s accessible, plus it’s hella entertaining.]

I want to confirm the inevitability of me creating a story about comparing self against the world.

I think I've said it before, but I wonder if the world will gradually adapt to this situation and be able to create new jobs and services and such.
I pondered over it yesterday while I was watching Mikasano's YouTube stream yesterday.
I wouldn't exactly call it progress, but I've thought about the title of the manga, the general setting, the pattern of combinations for a few characters (for instance, boss and subordinate, partners, 3-person party, 4-person party...), and an overarching structure of about 15 volumes worth.

20200414 TK and his song collab with Ishida Sui

TK did an interview about his new album “Sainou”, and a couple questions were related to the song collab he did with Ishida (see here for more info), so I decided to translate those parts. Original article can be found here.

Regarding the lyrics of "Sainou ~Sui Side~", how did you interact with the lyricist Ishida Sui? Some parts seem like they can extend to Tokyo Ghoul's world view, but did you have any discussions with him about that?

I originally wrote the lyrics for Tokyo Ghoul and handed it over to Sui-san, telling him, "Please rewrite it as you see fit." And so he wrote the lyrics with the image of Sigure*. It wasn't like I made a request to him, but more like we were sending love letters to each other (laughs).

T/N: He mentioned 時雨 (shigure) which means “late autumn rainfall”, but after listening to the song I think TK actually meant that Ishida wrote the lyrics based on Ling Tosite Sigure’s (凛として時雨) style.

The word "Sainou" is also the title of the album, and the collection of songs in the album is linked to the idea of "multicoloured/diverse talents", but was it deliberately given that title based on the overall picture? Or did it just happen to be a title suitable for the album? I'd also like to know more about the subtitle "Sui Side."

The title can also mean "I have no talent within myself." Of course, that's not something for anyone to decide, but there's something that emerges from the fact that there's someone there who can guide you to an answer that's attractive to you, and this album is like a collection of that. As for "Sui Side", the aim is for people to enjoy the contrast between it and the "TK Side", which will be released later in the future. It's rare to have two sets of lyrics for the same song, and even if a second set exists, it's unlikely for it to be ever released. But strangely enough it feels like a continuation of the story.

I’ve been gone for a while because I’ve been so busy with school and with everything’s that happening worldwide, but I’m almost done my semester! I’m not sure if Ishida has free time because he’s done his work for JJ, or because of COVID-19 emergency declaration in Japan a few hours ago, but I’m happy to see him back for more content :)

Ishida Sui’s Review of 2019

I didn’t think I’d ever finish this with my onslaught of classes including pharmacology, but I somehow managed! 6k word count, the longest TL I’ve done to date besides Parvati’s interlude for FGO. Lots of insight into Jack Jeanne’s production and what Ishida’s been up to for the past year. It was tough to translate because it was so long, but I had a lot of fun.

Let me know if there are any mistakes, I’m sure there’s a whole bunch. Have fun reading!

I also got to choose the voices of the minor characters after listening to them, so I believe they're perfect for their roles. (By the way, Ishiya Haruki who is playing Nagayama also played Kuroiwa Takeomi in TG...)
I want to draw everyone in Onyx when I've got spare time from work... I'll draw them if I have time...
Also, I was in Tokyo very recently to listen to the post-recordings of the main characters for the first time. Everyone was very cute. They were all amazing.

Recently I've been sooooo busy working around 40 hours a day,

zakki:re Q&A replies megathread

A translation megathread of the zakki:re Q&A contest letters Ishida sent back to winning contestants!

As far as I know there were 100 winners, though I only have around 40 in this post. There were more on Twitter, but some opted not to release them publicly on Twitter for personal reasons (such as if they asked personal questions). Some didn’t reveal their question, or all of Ishida’s replies, but I’ve tried my best to guess at their meaning if possible.

The ones I’ll post here are from Twitter, specifically if they came with pictures of Ishida’s art or handwritten replies. I’ll also mention some context if I felt that the conversation/topic between the OPs and Ishida was interesting.

On a brighter note, Ishida visited Hanae Natsuki (X) and imitated Hanae’s famous habit of being a cat b0t (unrelated to Ishida, but there’s a funny story about how it’s come to inconvenience Hanae when it comes to Kimetsu no Yaiba’s twitter account lol, you can learn more here) and posting photos of his cats every day and going “Good morning”.

He also posted a photo of his morning reading (X). The book on the right (”Nothing Happens In My Life” by Iwai Yuuki) was interesting because there weren’t a lot of incidents, while the book on the left (”A History of England: Understanding It In 2 Hours) had many more incidents.
