So as of last August it’s been 4 years since I started running this blog...which I still can’t believe. I wanted to do something to celebrate it, but I’ve been busy studying for the last couple months to really do anything extra besides new incoming content, though I’ve had a few things on my mind. And now it’s time for them to come to fruition! Time for some updates~

1. Blog theme

I made a few changes to my blog theme, but most importantly, THE FONT IS BIGGER NOW BLESS.

2. Quest light novel translations

I had to put them on hold because of school last year, but now I actually have time to work on them now. Most likely I’ll post a chapter from each short story every other week since they’re quite long. I’ve already started working on Quinques (Saiko’s story), and the first chapter (out of two) will be posted sometime the end of this month.

3. The Penisman

Yeah, you heard me right. TG’s predecessor doesn’t deserve to have 28 half-assed translated chapters, and I know I’m not the only one suffering from the TG drought, so I’ll be translating them from the very beginning. I highly recommend reading it as many of the characters there are prototypes for the TG characters.

I’ll provide more info on the schedule when I post the first chapter starting tonight (about an hour from now to be precise).

4. Donations

I’ve always been hesitant on it, but I’ve been considering opening up PayPal or a Ko-fi to help pay off my student loans since even a small amount will help. I’ll think about it a bit more before I make up my mind, but if you have any feedback about this, feel free to reply.

Thank you everyone for your support over the years <3

re:quest [tension] - chapter 5

This is the last chapter of “tension”. It’s been lots of fun translating it, and though it’s been difficult, I’ve learned a lot from it. The next short story I’m planning on translating is “quinquies”, the short story featuring Saiko and the Qs. It’ll be a while before that story will be out though because of my schedule. Anyways, thank you for your support, and I hope you enjoyed “tension” as much as I did!

For those who haven’t read “tension”, the short story about the CCG art festival, you can read chapter 1 here. Enjoy!

Today was the day of the art festival. The convention centre located in the same ward as the CCG main office was showing a turnout unseen in previous years. All sorts of paintings, sculptures, pottery and the like were on display, with the outstanding art that had won awards organized based on the colour of their attached ribbons.

In the midst of it all, Urie was gazing at the red ribbon for the highest honour that was attached to his own painting.

“...(Of course it would go to me.)”

Not to be too needy since I know you are insanely busy with school but do you have a timeline in mind for Tension? I keep thinking about who Arima is going to pick and I can't wait! As always, thank you for taking your time to translate for us. You really are too good to us.

No worries, thanks for being so polite anon :)

I’m about 1/3 done with the chapter (thankfully it’s a bit shorter than chapter 4 was). I want to say that I’ll be able to finish it in 2 weeks, but I have midterms coming up in the next couple weeks, so I’m not sure if I’ll be able to hold to that. But either way, chapter 5 will be the last chapter of Tension, so you definitely will get your conclusion to the art festival :)

Based on chapter 4 of :re Quest titled Tension, Haise frequently visited the coffee shop were touka worked, holding casual conversations with her:

“Um, has Sassan come by?” he asked. “Um, he was the person that was with me before. But not the one wearing the eyepatch…”

“I haven’t seen him recently,” she replied. Recently, so that meant that he came by a few times. “He must be pretty busy, I heard he was doing some investigator work.”

Which gives us the possibility of him inviting her to the Christmas party.

On the other hand, this fragment of the chapter:

‘What would it taste like now? She wouldn’t be able to make her coffee taste like Yoshimura’s, but could she bring out the taste of Anteiku?’

Contrasts with the scene of ch 99 where Kaneki assures that her coffee tastes the same as Yoshimura’s.

Fulfilling her objective of making :re the new Anteiku.

re:quest [tension] - chapter 4

I don’t even know how it took me this long to do chapter 4 (please don’t ask). Unfortunately the last chapter will definitely take a while since I’ll be starting school soon, but I’ll definitely finish it at some point.

For those who haven’t read “tension”, the short story about the CCG art festival, you can read chapter 1 here. Enjoy!

“Huh?” Koori-senpai, what are you doing?”

When Hairu had showed up to work at the S1 squad’s task room, she had found Ui cutting up photographs with a pair of scissors. “Do you have a grudge against those people in the photos or something?”

“Of course not.” Ui said, glaring at his hand. Hairu shrugged and sat down in her seat to escape from his line of sight.

When Ui finished cutting up the photo he had been holding, he began to clean up. Hairu rose from her chair and looked at him again. “Are you making a scrapbook then?”

Some notes regarding chapter 3 of tension:

  • Kuroiwa told Urie about how Takeomi mentioned that Urie would give him good practical advice back in chapter 133. That advice was from this chapter of tension regarding the art festival.
  • Bucket pudding (or king pudding) looks like this. It’s quite big.
  • The Antennae Galaxies that Mikage mentions are also known as NGC 4038/NGC 4039, which are a pair of interacting galaxies in the constellation Corvus.
  • The gingerbread house is something more like a “cookie house” in Japanese, but I changed it into “gingerbread” because it’s what we are most familiar with.

re:quest [tension] - chapter 3

Sorry for the delay. I ended up being pretty busy over the last few weeks, plus having other translations take more priority (like the actual manga chapters and the omakes). Hopefully the next chapters won’t take as long for me to finish.

For those who haven’t read “tension”, the short story about the CCG art festival, you can read chapter 1 here. Enjoy!

“Urie.”

Urie silently clicked his tongue as he heard someone call him from behind. Even without looking back at the person he immediately knew who it was.

“...(Annoying prick.)”

He turned around and sure enough, it was his classmate Kuroiwa Takeomi. Between Takeomi’s tall figure and upstanding visage, it was his honest-looking eyes that grated on Urie’s nerves the most, because they were just like the eyes of his father, Kuroiwa Iwao.

re:quest [tension] - chapter 2

This is my first time translating a novel (as opposed to manga), so it’s been an interesting experience. I’ve had to take more liberties than usual in translating the story, such as rearranging the lines, combining and splitting up sentences to make the story flow better. It’s taking roughly around 4-5 days to translate and proofread a chapter, so it looks like I’ll be able to post a chapter once, maybe twice a week.

Anyways, I hope you enjoy chapter 2 of “tension”, the short story that features Ui and Hairu and the CCG art festival. For those who haven’t read it, chapter 1 can be found here.

(Thank you @kanekikenunot and @tokyo-ghoul-out-of-context for proofreading.)

“…You’re going to be the special adjudicator!?”

Standing in front of Hairu and Ui was Arima Kishou. The man with hair devoid of colour, who carried an unearthly air around him, had just returned from a mission. The two had run into him by chance and had greeted him, and it was there that they learned about this unexpected news.

That Arima was to be the special adjudicator for the CCG art festival.

Ui: We should get Take-san and 0 Squad to participate in the art festival.

Hairu: But then I’ll have a lower chance of winning the award if more people join.

Ui: Don’t worry, even if Take-san participated there’s no way he would win the award, because just like its creator, the artwork would be plain and inconspicuous, and that would be the end of it.

re:quest [tension] - chapter 1

I hope everyone’s having a wonderful summer vacation so far (if you’re not on vacation, then I’m sorry). But anyways, every week or so I’ll be posting the translations of the short stories from Tokyo Ghoul:re[quest], the 4th TG light novel. I’ll be starting off with the 1st chapter out of 6 for the short story “tension”, which is about the CCG art festival and features Ui and Hairu, along with the other members of the CCG. I hope you enjoy it!

(Thank you @tokyo-ghoul-out-of-context for proofreading.)

“‘Recruiting artwork for the CCG art festival’...?”

It was that time of year when the raging winter winds pierced the skin, dead leaves swaying about. First Class Investigator Ihei Hairu of the S1 squad of the CCG stopped at the unfamiliar words.

re: [quest] Chapter 4 “sponse”

Hello!! So … before we get to it, here’s my explanation of what I’m up to with re: quest. So far, I’ve been BURIED in school and, as far as translations go, have mainly been chipping away at outlines/summaries as well as my tagging system to make things as convenient for you guys as I can. But, at the same time, I thought I should give you some kind of content to get the ball rolling! So I spent all day yesterday and today fleshing out my translation for Part 1 of Chapter 4, “Sponse” (I’m pretty close with the rest of the chapter too – just have lotsa editing to do). This chapter is about Hori Chie and Tsukiyama Shuu and is very cute (happy birthday the other day, 2/25, to Hori, btw!!)♥

About my tagging system and overall formatting: so far, my links for desktop are all set. This post will have Part 1 of the chapter in full under the cut (mainly for mobile users). While posts like this will have as much content as I can include in them, I’ll be using posts primarily as way of announcement for updates. All of the translation content will be on my blog’s Quest Navigation Page, which can also be accessed through my translations page on the main navbar (I am aware that these links don’t work for mobile – that’s why I’ll try to put as much content as I can in posts. The issue is that I can’t guarantee content in posts will stay available). Finally, a disclaimer: I’d encourage anyone invested in the Tokyo Ghoul series to buy the official copies of this light novel and its official translations when they are released in your area to support the authors and publishers.

Thank you everyone for your patience and please please please, don’t hesitate to send me corrections/suggestions/asks and messages about this project! It’s a big work in progress, and there will definitely be some mess-ups on my part, but my hope is that we can all enjoy some more of Quest. It’s pretty awesome. – koko♥

Chapter 4: Sponse Part 1 TL: As we all know and love, occasionally Tsukiyama throws in English or French words when he’s talking. Anything he says that’s written in Roman letters in the original Japanese text, I will both italicize and underline. All other emphatic markings only for conveying their own regular emphasis.

“Alright, now take a picture, of me!”    “Nahh,” Hori replied, and the conversation was over in 3 seconds. She was watching through the coffee shop’s big windows at the shopping street where people came and went, housewives buying things for dinner and hoisting bulky eco-bags on their shoulders.    Hori looked like an uncomfortable elementary school student in the chic and relaxed coffee shop where she sat. However, inside, she was already at the level of a college student. Well, actually, she almost never went to college, as she roamed from east to west as a “free camera-man” with her camera, her one hobby, always by her side.

hello, can i ask what the aogiri story in the novel is about? thank you so much for all you've done!

no problem :’) also, hm, do you mean the second story, “union” which has hinami trying to make coffee for ayato?

i skimmed it really briefly just now and here is a REALLY general jumbled up pile of things that happen in that chapter (DISCLAIMER: please take this with a grain of salt, i could have misinterpreted!) –
