A Match Made in Candy Land: Part 2
Two: Sweet, Sweet Villainy
The poor fools! They had been running for what seemed like forever, and not a single police siren or shout pierced the chilly night air. She felt the cold wind on her skin and weaving through her hair, but it didn’t bother her. She felt so alive, so carefree! She felt like she could do anything and everything she wanted. She wanted to feel like this all of the time for the rest of her life. She looked over at her strange new companion running beside her, still pulling the cart filled with every type of candy. She had never been more attracted to someone in her whole life.
They eventually reached a deserted parking lot. There was only one car left there, a mint green old-fashioned vehicle that just had to belong to Sweet Tooth. Suddenly, he stopped and turned to face her. She skidded to a halt as quickly as she could, somewhat disappointed as the world around her grew more and more still. “So, my little sugar baby”, he pulled a box of Sugar Babies out of the candy pile and held them up for her to see, “you know who I am. My question now is, are you ready to join me, to give up the life you knew before and start a new one by my side?”
It didn’t take her very long to come to a decision. She had a life with her family far away from Gotham, but it was a restricted and dull life. Her life since then had been nothing but one big struggle to get by with a dangerously low income. She knew that she didn’t want to ever go back to either of those situations. She had no clue as to what was in store for her if she joined this deliciously wicked man, but she knew that whatever it could be would be better than what she had lived with before. “Yeah, sweet heart, I’m ready.” She pulled a pack of Wonka Sweettarts out of the cart, grinning mischievously.
His face lit up and his lips spread into a devilish grin that made her swoon. “Excellent! Then let’s go, we need to make you less recognizable. After all, the cops are probably looking for you by now.” She was about to question why he would say such a thing when it hit her. YOU IDIOT! She mentally scorned herself. Of course the cops would be looking for her! She had fired a gun several times, probably causing quite a commotion even though the place where she had fired it was mostly vacant. In addition to that, the man that she had tried to rob had probably called the cops as soon as he had escaped, and she had made no attempt whatsoever to hide her face the entire time! And then on top of all of that, she had helped someone rob a grocery store! How could she possibly be so stupid! But, how did he know what she had done earlier that night?
She could tell by the look on his face that he knew exactly what she was thinking. “Candy, my sweet, let’s just say that no crime that happens in Gotham goes unnoticed by me.” He winked at her, and she automatically smiled. They walked over to the car, and he loaded the candy stash into the trunk. “But what clothing place will be open this late?” After all, it was past midnight.
In one smooth movement, he kicked over the now empty cart and turned to look at her with a smile on his face. “Don’t worry, sugar. I know a place.”
* * *
Sooner than she had expected the car jolted to a stop in front of a dark and decaying building. Is this really the place? She kept her thoughts to herself as he got out of the car and went around to open her door for her. A true gentleman, she smiled. “You drive like a madman,” she teased him as they walked toward the suspicious building. He simply sent her another heart-stopping evil grin. “Guilty as charged.” He opened the front door for her, and they entered the premises.
She could not have been more wrong about this place. Despite its unpleasant outside appearance, on the inside it looked like the classiest of stores. Bright white lights lit up the room and bounced off of the thousands of magnificent items for sale. Costumes and accessories of every color and shade imaginable were crowded together all over the place. She had never seen anything like it. A well-dressed man stood behind a checkout counter. “Hello, how can I help- Oh, it’s you again.” The tone of his voice immediately changed from welcoming to aggressive as soon as he laid eyes on Sweet Tooth.
“Yes, we need to find a new look for Candy here. Can you help us out?” The clerk walked over until he was face to face with Sweet Tooth. “Why would I do anything for you, you scumbag! You promised you’d pay me for all the things you bought last time you were here and you never did!” Sweet Tooth smiled evilly, and moved his face as close to the clerk’s face as possible. “Why indeed?” In an instant his grin contorted into a menacing sneer. “Because if you don’t, I’m gonna shove this candy cane so far inside of you, you’re bodily fluids are going to smell like peppermint for the rest of your life.” He whispered the words so quietly that she had to listen very carefully to hear them. She had never seen this side of him, yet she had always known that it was there, hidden behind his mesmerizing blue eyes. After all, he didn’t get his reputation of being a most wanted criminal for being pleasant all of the time. Seeing him like this in person should have terrified her, but instead she found that she was even more attracted to him because of it. She couldn’t control the smile that formed on her lips as the clerk backed off with a look of terror in his eyes. “Right this way, miss,” he tried to resume his professional manner. “I think I have just the thing for you.”
He led her to a mannequin encased in a glass display. It was obvious that this outfit was special. It was so interesting to look at, a shimmering blue and pink dress with a tutu-like skirt which somewhat resembled the end of a candy wrapper. It was paired with matching blue and pink knee-high Converse shoes, shiny hot pink fingerless gloves, a necklace and earrings with charms shaped like hard candy, a peppermint-shaped ring, and a half blue half pink wig. Just staring at it took her breath away. It was almost as if it was made for her.
“Well, what are you waiting for, my Dove?” Sweet Tooth pulled a Dove chocolate bar from a pocket inside of his suit. “Try it on.”

A few minutes later, she emerged from the dressing room with the full costume on. She immediately saw Sweet Tooth’s face light up with his usual grin. “Baby, you look good enough to eat!” He started laughing at his own clever comment, a wicked maniacal cackle that sounded like it belonged in an asylum, but one that she loved anyway. She didn’t even initially notice that she had started laughing too, and it was different from her usual chuckle. It was a high-pitched giggle that sounded just as evil as his. Even as she noticed this difference, she didn’t stop laughing. What is coming over me? She started jumping from one converse-clad foot to the other with delight, her tutu bouncing up and down with her. Well, whatever it is, I can definitely get used to it.
“Thanks for letting us go on this spree, but I’m afraid we must be going!” Sweet Tooth said as he pulled a pack of Spree candy from another pocket. They dashed out of the store, climbed into the car and sped away, all before the clerk could get a single furious word out. She looked out of the window just before the whole building exploded, leaving nothing but clouds of sweet-smelling pink smoke.
“Where to now, ST?” She turned to look at him with a smile on her face that matched his.
“Anywhere we want, my Candy. Anywhere we want.”
And then she kissed him, and he tasted better than any candy she had ever had.
A Match Made in Candy Land: Part 1
One: A Tasty Encounter
I’m in too deep, she thought to herself, as she crouched behind a pillar in a mostly vacant parking garage. She was desperate. Her decision to move to the city of Gotham had completely freed her from her oppressive parents, but that decision resulted in a not-so-pleasant turn of events. She was completely cut off from all of the funds that her family had previously provided for her. She went from a restricted yet safe life at home to a practically penniless life on the streets of Gotham, and now she was desperate enough to begin a life of crime. She felt the cold metal of the gun in her hands. She had never even touched a gun before and was afraid that it would go off at any second. That was when she heard footsteps approaching the vehicle behind her. You can do this, she thought to herself, willing herself to calm down and just breathe. On the count of three, turn around and do what you came here to do, goddammit!
One… two… three!
In a flash she leapt from her hiding spot, startling the man who was about to get into his car. Before he even had a chance to open the car door, he noticed the gun in her violently trembling hands. “Back away from the car!” she tried to sound intimidating, but was not sure of her success. However, the surprised man did as she told him. “Now, hand over any money you’ve got.” She was not used to robbing people, and it was obvious that the man was starting to realize this. He began fumbling for his wallet, but in a split second he lunged toward his car. “Stop!” she screamed at him, firing three warning shots and trying to distract him, but it was no use. The man stumbled into his car and sped out of the vicinity before she could pull the trigger one more time. “Shit!” she cussed. Now she had no money to pay this month’s rent, not to mention all of her other bills. She was an idiot. She couldn’t even successfully rob someone out of desperation, and she was really starting to believe that she couldn’t do anything right. She put down the gun on the dirty concrete. Since her first robbery attempt was such a failure, she doubted that she would need it anymore. What am I going to do now?
Lost in her own thoughts, she stumbled out of the parking garage, and into the moonlit street. She walked onward without even thinking about where she was going, and finally stopped to think when she found herself at the front door of a grocery store. Of all places to go to after a failed attempt at robbing someone, she didn’t understand why her feet had led her to such a place. Well, she had a few remaining dollars in her pocket, so she decided that she might as well spend them here and now. She entered the store, setting off a chime bell for incoming customers. Whoever was still working there at this late hour must have wondered why someone would come in at this time. Still, even though she had just carried a loaded gun minutes ago, in her gray hoodie and ripped black denim skirt, she didn’t look very suspicious.
She wandered the isles aimlessly, looking for the cheapest items that would fight off hunger for the longest amount of time. She was staring at an assortment of potato chips when she bumped straight into someone. “Oh my god, I’m so-“ she started to apologize when she noticed the man before her eyes. At the sight of him, all words escaped her.
She had never seen a man so dually beautiful and bizarre before, at least in person. Even with heavy white and blue lipstick and bright pink blush covering it, he had a perfectly structured face, almost like that of an angel, but one with a twisted and slightly wicked smile, and glittering bright blue eyes. His hair absolutely had to be a wig. It was a light powdery blue, and looked, in the most basic terms, like a fluffy swab of cotton candy. And then there was his figure. He wore a light pink suit, with a mint green vest and white dress shirt underneath. This suit was also accented with a red and white striped tie resembling a candy cane. On his feet were mint green Converse shoes with pink laces. Lastly, in his hand he carried a walking cane that was decorated to look exactly like a giant candy cane. For someone with such a bizarre outfit, he was incredibly handsome. She found herself completely hypnotized by him, and he had an almost magnetic control over her.
“Oh no, excuse me,” he said, and the mere sound of his voice sent shivers down her spine. “I didn’t even see you there.” He flashed her a brief smile, and she caught a glimpse of teeth that shined like pearls.
She still could not find her words, and awkwardly turned away from him. He passed by her, walking down the isle. He was obviously searching intently for something, and as he turned to go to the next isle she could tell by the expression on his face that he had found what he was looking for. She could not help but follow him, first with her eyes, and then with her whole body. It was as if one look from him had put her under a deep hypnotic spell that she could not shake off. She watched him gaze up and down the candy isle, and then carefully pick item after item up, thoroughly inspecting each one, before putting it in his shopping cart. She observed the pile of candy in his cart grow taller and taller. Wow, more and more candy? She thought to herself. This guy must have quite the… Sweet Tooth.
She gasped out loud, accidentally drawing his attention. As he walked slowly toward her, her thoughts began racing. She had heard of an extremely dangerous new criminal in Gotham who was terrorizing the city with his candy-themed crimes. She distinctly remembered the name of this criminal being Sweet Tooth. Was this really the Sweet Tooth? She had already sensed an element of danger coming from this strange man, but still his hypnotic power over her remained. She felt her knees grow weak as he pierced her heart with his blue eyes, eyes that occasionally gleamed with something she could not comprehend just yet. Before she could gather her thoughts, he was right in front of her again, staring at her with what seemed to be an almost childlike fascination.
“What’s your name, anyway?” It took her several long seconds to register what he was asking. “Candace.” She tried to smile warmly. “Candace…” he seemed to contemplate the name. “Would you mind if I called you Candy? As you can tell I have a bit of a sweet tooth that only candy can cure.” He winked at her. She felt her heart skip a beat. Was this really happening? She wasn’t sure how to react. She felt both intimidated and attracted to him. Of her feelings she knew one thing and one thing only: that she wanted to stay with him, to follow him wherever he may take her. “I wouldn’t mind that at all, Sweet Tooth.”
He didn’t seem the least bit surprised that she knew who he was. “Well then, how about you and me blow this popsicle stand?” He looked at her and there was an almost manic light in his eyes. Before she had time to answer, he tipped his grocery cart upward, mounted it, and took off through the emergency exit, leaving the employees in the store momentarily unaware that he’d just robbed them. Inspired by his dangerous and carefree attitude, she rushed out of the store and followed him into the night. She had never felt so free.
