Copy and pasted from our original post:

We've received a lot of reports that apparently the checksum the patch is looking for isn't the correct one, and I managed to accurately reproduce the error myself -- it seems like we fell into the age-old pitfall of the testing environment not quite matching the theoretical one. I'm sorry -- this is really embarrassing, to release a patch only for it to not even work properly! (It must have gotten a lot of hopes up and dashed, too.) The members of our team are on different timezones, but we're definitely trying to get this fixed as soon as possible.

Well, after a ride of five years of labor and various people without whose help I would have been unable to get through it, we’ve finally released the translation patch for the PSP game adaptation of Digimon Adventure!

Thank you all for your patience, and I hope you enjoy!

(x) It’s an awful lie to say your dreams will come true just by believing in them. It would be nice if it could happen by belief alone, but that doesn’t happen. But if you continue walking forward with hope in your heart, never giving up, there are times you may run into unexpected opportunities. Today I just saw something like that happen. To someone at work today, not me.

(x) It was the day Hiroyuki Kakudou-san and I were working on the PSP Digimon Adventure game. I could never forget it. I didn't even consider the idea that these words could be about me, but my vision gets blurry when I think about the last seven years. August 1. As Digimon Day closes, I received a truly special gift. Thank you.

Hiroyuki Kakudou

(x) @han_meg_han I think you, who was able to be in the show you'd dreamed of as a child, can be an inspiration to many people. I'm very glad that I was able to help you with one of those opportunities. Let's continue to do our best in the future, and let's meet again in the recording booth.

Megumi Han

(x) @kakudou No, no, I'm the one who's happy to have been able to have helped you make that beautiful world. I was able to do it for the sake of the work, I was able to do it for everyone's sake. And from now on, that's what's most important to me. Let's do it again someday, walking forward with hope in our hearts, never giving up.

Moving towards the final stretch

(Cross-posted from the patch site.)

So, the first solid good news in a while!

The wonderful people at Deep Dive have recently found a way to give me significant help in the translator's process, and with the help of my new proofreaders and the fact school should be finishing up soon, I am setting a slightly optimistic benchmark of having all the text translated by the end of July. I say "slightly optimistic" because I don't think you should be surprised if it rolls around and I end up saying that there was a lot more text than expected and we'll have to take a little longer.

That said, though, we have a lot clearer direction of where we're going now and school has gotten much easier for me so I expect I'll be able to work at the same quick pace I did when I first started the project. And of course, putting a deadline on myself will make me willing to work much faster. Sadly, I am a person who does in fact have a life other than translating a PSP game for kids with priorities that must take precedence over this, such as "a social life", "personal enjoyment hobbies", "school", and "dealing with the fact I'm running out of money and therefore trying to find a way to make more, which also takes up more time".

Now, when I said all the text should be translated by the end of July, I didn't mean the patch will be finished by the end of July. Deep Dive is a very hard-working group and they're also aiming to have much of their work done by that time, but at this stage neither of us can make any guarantees, and there are other things we'll have to take care of. Of course, I can provide more accurate information once we get to that stage.

Thank you to everyone who's assisting so I don't have to functionally one-man this anymore! Hopefully we can make something that's worth the wait.

I'm happy to announce that progress is continuing splendidly. We have at least two more proofreaders on board and we're going at the fastest we've been in a long time. While I'm still recruiting both proofreaders and translators, I'd like to put an emphasis on the fact that we really do need more translators. Again, please contact me at hozukinokazari (at) gmail (dot) com if you're interested!

Still recruiting translation assistance

Unfortunately, despite the fact I would certainly like otherwise, I'm a student and I go to school and school is a lot of work, and at this stage if I continue at the pace I am now you're not going to see this patch for another three years. I've been pretty lax about recruitment up until now, but I've been putting a huge burden on everyone who's helping me when I go for weeks without an update. Over half the text has been translated; this project should not be going as slowly as it is, so this is really shameful on my end.

Since I figured the last recruitment post might have been a bit too restrictive, I'm now looking for two kinds of people, proofreaders and assistant translators.

Proofreaders

  • Must be a native speaker of English

Translators

  • Must have a certain degree of competency in the Japanese language (a quick test will be used) - that is to say, don't just be plugging lines in Google Translate for me

Both

  • Must be accessible via Skype or some other chat client
  • Must be able to use Dropbox or some other quick collaborative file sharing service

Again, if you're interested, please drop me a line at hozukinokazari (@) gmail (.) com, or send an ask. Thank you!

Thank you!

how far along is the patch going and when will the new update be out

Because of the rather uncertain nature of things after changing technical hands (which, again, I’m sorry that I can’t give details about), I can’t give a technical number about how well it’s doing.

Translation text-wise, I’m at the same place I was before (the Dark Masters arc). However, I still have to go through some TLC, and I especially have to adjust stuff to go with the new technical team(s) I’m working with. So it’s definitely a roadblock, but it’s a roadblock I’m on my way to getting over.

I’m obligated to keep quiet about some stuff right now, but I will say that I’m no longer going to be the single voice about this project once things are settled (back when I was working with NGG I was responsible for most of the updates), so keep an eye out for another announcement from someone else! I’ll probably be able to talk more about it at length then.

Good news!

Well, I don’t think I can give the full details out yet in the interest of privacy. But as far as the Digimon Adventure PSP patch goes, we’re back on track! Looks like I’ll be able to make progress after all, so stay tuned on this blog for when I can reveal more info!

And there might be another surprise coming as well, hmm?

Hey is this blog to place to go to see if you have any updates on getting help with the hacking? Just eager for news of a future. Thanks for all your work so far!

This is the place! Unfortunately I haven't gotten any help yet. (I anticipated it'd be hard to get it, so I brought it upon myself.)

In the worst case scenario there might be an emergency option that I'd prefer not to go into full details about...but in any case, I know this uncertainty is very disappointing, so I'm very sorry!

About me, the Adventure patch, and NGG

As I posted on the patch website blog today, I’m departing from the group as their translator. This is purely due to some issues regarding communication and a work environment that doesn’t work well with my schedule (I can provide more details if you wish to contact me about them under the circumstances below). The split was not done for reasons of any ill will as much as staying with them was tying down progress severely on both of our parts.

In any case, the fact is that I’ve departed from NGG but am still very interested in translating for the Digimon Adventure PSP game, especially since I’ve translated well over half the story content and more. So although it feels a little rude to NGG to be putting myself up for hire right after splitting from them (and even linking this post back to the blog, to boot), the thing is that all I’m good at is translating, and I’m perfectly willing to do so provided I can work with people who can do the hacking parts and otherwise. Thus, if:

  • you have experience in PSP hacking (as I’m apparently informed there aren’t a lot of people with the documentation on it compared to other consoles) or you can do graphic editing to edit Japanese text
  • you’re accessible easily through some kind of chat client (Skype or otherwise) and can communicate often (as communication makes it easy to get feedback right away on what can work and what can’t, and in addition keeps me on top of getting work done on time)

please drop me an ask or send me an email at hozukinokazari (@) gmail (.) com and hopefully we can work something out.

Thank you!

I feel that this probably goes without saying, but just in case: in terms of things like readability and sentence flow, the translations I do of informal things like interviews, tweets, official statements, and side material will not be reflective of the Digimon Adventure patch.

Other than translation accuracy checks, I don’t do much sentence flow proofreading on translations for this blog, since my priority is to just get it done quickly so people can understand what it says. But in regards to the patch, since readability can affect the player experience, the text will be going through a lot more scrutiny in TLC.

And to all those of you waiting, thank you for your patience!

As a treat while all of you are so kindly patient with me as I work on the patch for the Digimon Adventure PSP game, I’d like to share a little fun fact!

xhai provides me with text dumps that come straight out of the game, and although the game is fairly well-organized oftentimes I get blocks of text without any real context and I have to decipher where they come from. A lot of the time, there’s text that seems to have never made it into the final game. Usually these are just reiterated junk data or slightly different variants of certain episodes (although there’s a pretty interesting deleted sub-episode in which a baby Pyocomon imprints onto Koushirou as its “papa”).

However, there was one thing that particularly interested me: among the text data for the main party Digimon, there’s strings for Hikari’s Digimon being Holydramon (the Ultimate form seen in Digimon Adventure 02′s first movie and some merchandise) instead of Ofanimon. This leads me to believe that Prope/Bandai Namco seriously considered having Holydramon be Tailmon’s Ultimate form instead of Ofanimon for at least one point.

The theoretical Holydramon has the following skills:

  • Holy Flame - All enemies: Vigorously blows a holy flame
  • Hermit Fog - All enemies: Covers enemies in a holy fog that significantly lowers their abilities
  • Apocalypse - One enemy: Restrains an enemy in a circle of light and drops a holy meteor on them

If you were to ask me why the change was made, even if my personal take isn’t really something for this blog, I would say it’s probably for reasons of game balance. (The game is more a Bandai Namco product than a Toei product, so consistency with the anime isn’t as large of a priority.)

When you first get access to Angewomon, she has Holy Air, which is the single most useful skill you have access to in the game at the time. However, Holydramon isn’t much of a healer-type Digimon, and her lack of that kind of skill would probably make a lot of people decide to use Angewomon over her. As a result, there wouldn’t be much gameplay-centric motivation to get your Bonding Rank for Hikari up and unlock Tailmon’s Ultimate form. Ofanimon, on the other hand, gets the (invented for this game, but plausible given her nature) skill Eden’s Air, an upgraded/superior version of Holy Air, which keeps her a party staple at that level.

Since Digimon Adventure tri. seems to be delving into the question of Ultimate forms, ultimately Toei is the one that gets to call the shots on this kind of thing. But I thought it would be interesting for people to know!

So in regards to the Digimon Adventure PSP translation patch, I’ve posted a very important notice about its future. If you’ve been following it closely, you might want to check it out.

I’m hoping to have this done as soon as possible, but I also want to release a good, finished product, so I hope this won’t cause too much of an inconvenience!
