I'm probably procrastinating with JRPGs right now

A translation of a series of articles posted on the Digimon Partners website between February 2022 and October 2023, detailing information about Digimon animation production and planning, especially in regards to Digimon Adventure, Digimon Adventure 02, and Digimon Adventure 02 THE BEGINNING. All of them were written by Eri Shimomura, producer for THE BEGINNING.

As of this writing, updates for the series seem to have stalled, so I have posted all of the available parts released up until now and may update the post retroactively if more appear.

A translation of the “100 Comments” left by voice actors and staff members for animation and music production from Digimon Adventure, Adventure 02, Tamers, and Frontier, which were included in a booklet from the DiGiMONMUSiC 100 Title Commemoration Release: We Love DiGiMONMUSiC (デジモンミュージック100タイトル記念作品 We Love DiGiMONMUSIC) album collection, originally released December 25, 2002. This also includes both versions of the addendum comment left by music producer Shintarou Matsui in both the original version and the December 25, 2013 rerelease.

Translations for the text found in the booklets for the “Digimon Original Story” drama CD series released on April 23, 2003, consisting of the following:

The CD booklets for Adventure and Adventure 02 contain commentary from series director Hiroyuki Kakudou, the booklet for Tamers includes excerpts from the CD’s respective tracks, and the booklet for Frontier contains comments from the characters’ voice actors.

This has been something I’ve been turning over in my head for a long time now, but after several months of consideration and consultation with others, I’ve decided to translate 純真の紋章 (“junshin no monshou“) as “Crest of Sincerity” and “誠実の紋章” (“seijitsu no monshou“) as “Crest of Integrity” going forward, and I also plan to retroactively update most of my past translations to reflect this. Those who have followed my translations may know that I’d been using the translation “Purity” for 純真 (“junshin“) and “Honesty” for “誠実” (“seijitsu“) up until now. On top of explaining my justification for the changes, I thought I also might as well take the opportunity to write about Adventure and Adventure 02‘s Crest names in translation.

The Digimon Adventure LAST EVOLUTION Kizuna Blu-ray deluxe edition booklet contains summaries of the character arcs of the twelve main featured Chosen Child and Digimon pairs. For the eight pairs originating from Digimon Adventure, each paragraph recaps their character arcs across Adventure, Adventure 02, and Adventure tri., while the remaining four have a recap of their character arcs in Adventure 02.

A translation of “A Music Director’s Soliloquy” (音楽ディレクターの独り言), a booklet included with the DiGiMONMUSiC 100 Title Commemoration Release: We Love DiGiMONMUSiC (デジモンミュージック100タイトル記念作品 We Love DiGiMONMUSIC) album collection, originally released December 25, 2002. The booklet contains commentary from sound producer and director Hiroshi Chiba on music production for Digimon Adventure, Adventure 02, Tamers, and Frontier, as well as a message from NEC Interchannel producer Shintarou Matsui.

For organization’s sake, this masterlist contains only the character songs and not any of the other songs featured on the albums. It also does not include the Mini Drama portions (which have already been translated by onkeikun here), but it does include the “Quotes” tracks from the Enemy Character Song File.

As frustrated as I am about the fact this franchise can't maintain consistent localization standards, I have to admit I get a kick out of official translations stubbornly refusing to comply with things that don't make sense.

Since Masatoshi Chioka was announced to be a director for Ghost Game, I'm bringing back this amusing old incident involving him for fun. (This incident has a joke referring to it in the next-episode preview at the end of Adventure 02's episode 16.)
