Police defund communities in part through the protection they require by the state. From settlements and lawsuits to infrastructure and walls, police take society’s resources to terrorize communities of color and protect private property.

If they are setting this up, it’s with the anticipation that the murderer will walk away or serve bare minimum time

If that doesn’t tell you the criminal justice system we have, then idk what else will

in addition to this fencing and barbed wire traps, the city is planning to spend over $1.1 million on "communication" to spread the city's spin on the trial (apparently they cancelled the influencer part after backlash, but $1,169,500 was meant for other forms)

So this is the level of YA distopia novel we're in.

Other fun thing I haven’t seen mentioned here: for the last two weeks, and going into the trial, pretty much all downtown public services are canceling appointments - some of which people have waited MONTHS for, and are asking them to reschedule at other locations.

One of the alternate locations I know of can be reached by bus or light rail, but it is literally at the end of a very long route into the suburbs.

Everything else requires ownership of a car and the ability to drive anywhere between half an hour and 45 minutes depending on where you live to reach it, plus the same or more to get back depending on traffic.

I don’t think I have to tell you how the impact of those decisions is skewed...
