its crazy bc i remember the first thing i thought when i first talked to ming xiao was oh thank god they didnt give her a racist fake accent. man.
Vampires & Vampire Hunters but make it about during the late 1800s in the Philippines
prince stop fucking ur primogen challenge
i know the answer is "the xenophobia and orientalism" but it still baffles me how, when talking to ming xiao early on in the game, like 4 out of the 5 dialogue options always are "you're a stuck-up bitch and i hate you"
like she's actually really courteous to you??? she's just proud of her culture, that's not her being elitist? the game really does expect us to look at a strong, powerful woman of color and go "damn someone should put her in her place."
i know there's history there with the kuei-jin having "invaded" san francisco years prior, but in-game their "villain" arc is so sloppily done and so steeped in racism. (it is also laughable to have lacroix accuse the kuei-jin of being invaders when he served in Napoleon's army)
literally, as long as your brain isn't completely poisoned by orientalism, there is nothing in-game that makes the kuei-jin seem that much more conniving or untrustworthy than any of the other factions we're introduced to. it's a shame that the ming xiao ending is such a 'fuck you' to the player, because i honestly respect her 10x more than strauss, and would much rather ally with the kuei-jin than do the camarilla ending with strauss.
anyways i want a vtmb remaster that fixes the awful orientalism in the game and makes ming xiao an actual viable ally, like she deserves to be.
I was always polite to her. I don't even really remember the rude options. You can be a jerk in multiple ways to everyone, so it didn't really stand out to me
While the game does allow you to be rude to pretty much everyone else in-game, it feels especially pointed in Ming Xiao's case. In most other cases, you have a handful of "normal" responses and then something to the effect of "wow you're ugly" or "wow you're a freak. i don't respect any of you." Which, considering the NPCs you interact with...fair. Considering how Knox screams at you "Are you a vampire?!" calling him an idiot in turn is a very warranted reaction.
But with Ming Xiao, she will say something as innocuous as "Kuei-Jin are not the same as vampires" and the fledgling will have 3 different ways to say "So you're saying you're better than us?!" or "So vampires are disgusting and weak compared to you?!" It completely comes out of left field, and feels like such a complete over-reaction.
Compare this to conversations you can have with Strauss, another individual in a position of power who is also quite conniving. You're not given options like that with him. You can condescendingly call him 'Dad' and call him out on the gargoyle thing, but none of those dialogue options have the same level of vitriol and disgust that you're able to level at Ming Xiao.
The game expects you to distrust her...for no good reason. We're supposed to interpret her pride as arrogance and self-superiority. We're supposed to be threatened by the fact that she's confident and proud of her culture. And while this might just be a little suspicious on its own, when combined with the sheer level of racism, orientialism, and xenophobia present in the game (especially during the Chinatown level), it becomes abundantly clear that we're supposed to distrust Ming Xiao purely because she's — as I mentioned earlier in my post — a woman of color in a position of power.
i personally think we should be able to tell jeanette, velvet, ming xiao, and damsel that gary's hoarding nude posters of them and just let them loose on him

Why can’t we just stay right here?
It was pointed out to me by a friend that Cait hurt Vi in the same spot she healed her
I fucking hate how this show is breaking my heart
I need to stress how important it is that Jinx made that prosthetic arm for Sevika.
Jinx, for as long as the audience has known her, has only ever made inventions for her own personal use. She designs them in a way that is specific to her whims and interests, which gives the overall impression that no one should be using her creations without instructions. And they're made to suit her fighting style, which is why we don't see anyone close to her, like Silco, using them.
That prosthetic arm she designed for Sevika is quite possibly the first invention she's made that is purely and entirely for someone else to use. Jinx saw how Sevika mourned Silco, saw that her unrelenting loyalty for him still held layers of resentment and rage, but that she still grieved him anyway.
It's not coincidence that immediately after this encounter (during which she saw Sevika struggle to repair her old mechanical arm), Jinx creates this prosthetic for her, pouring all her creative innovation into it. She deliberately designs it as a gift in every sense of the word, wrapping it neatly into a bow like a present, for a woman who may or may not even be her ally anymore.
And the second Sevika puts it on, we see Jinx's trademark eccentricity, her wild colors, her manic machinations whirring to life. It's a sparkling, visual reminder of Jinx's affection on her body, a physical manifestation of her desire for Sevika to live and succeed. She gave the arm tricks, weapons, instruments of brutality--things we expect to see from her--but also music and fireworks, features that serve no purpose in combat other than making her smile.
We have never seen this from Jinx before, never seen her do something like this for someone else. When Sevika asks why Jinx made it for her, knowing the novelty for what it was, she'd simply responded with, "It was something I could fix."
It's no surprise that Sevika continues to protect Jinx aftewards. Whether Jinx was consciously aware of it or not, she had been openly declaring, "this is my ally; attack her and face my wrath."
