(1247 words) Summary:

By its very definition, Glee is about opening yourself up to joy, and that is exactly what Eddie Diaz is trying to do. He’s been punishing himself for almost six months for pushing Chris into his parents’ waiting arms. But he’s shaved off his mustached disguise, he’s had a dance around his living room, and now he’s sitting next to his - unusually quiet - best friend, watching a cringey teen musical dramady and… Enjoying it?

After closing the door Eddie looked down at the beer in his hand and then at Buck - making himself at home on Eddie’s couch. Eddie frowned slightly then shrugged. If Buck wanted to talk - about whatever it was that had sent him here - then he would. Eddie didn’t bother walking around the couch, simply stepping up and over onto the cushions and sitting next to Buck as Old Time Rock ‘n’ Roll continued playing from every speaker in his house.

He unscrewed his beer and took a sip, before looking over at Buck.

Next to him Buck was still completely silent, his eyes staring straight forward but unseeing, and Eddie frowned again, taking another sip and waiting for Buck to break the comfortable silence between them.

Old Time Rock ‘n’ Roll ended, crossfading into Burning Love by Elvis, and, after a few seconds of the song, Buck finally spoke.

“Have you ever seen Glee?” Buck asked, and Eddie blinked in confusion.

“Bits and pieces,” He said, shrugging, “My sisters watched it… why?”

Buck was already reaching for the remote on the coffee table, turning on his TV and scrolling through Eddie’s Disney Plus account. Eddie turned off his music and watched with bemused amusement as Buck typed in Glee and pressed on the first result, settling into the couch and hugging a pillow to his chest, sipping on his beer.

Eddie wondered if he should go and put pants on, but decided to grab a blanket instead, laying it over his legs as he settled in comfortably too.

Again, if Buck needed to talk about whatever it was that had sent him to Eddie’s he would. If he simply wanted to watch a cringey teen musical dramady in silence sipping on beers? Then that’s what they’d do.

What Eddie hadn’t been expecting was to enjoy the show.

The Universe is screaming at Buck not to go through with the sperm donation. Or: buck gets into a car accident on his way to the fertility clinic and has dreams and realizations. (because i was so certain that buck was going to get into an accident at the end of last weeks episode when he was on the phone with connor and then i couldn't get the idea out of my mind)

“Yeah, I’m on my way to the clinic now,” Buck says, double checking the map open on his phone as he talks to Connor. “They said that as long as I get there by 9 they’ll squeeze me in,”

“It’s 8:45.” Connor says. “You think you’re going to make it in time?”

Buck manages a smile against the lack of trust in Connor’s voice, rolling his eyes slightly as he looks at his watch, then back at the map on his phone, then back at the road - the light in front of him has just turned red, which will cut into his time, but he should still be okay.

“Trust me, it’s all good.” He says, drumming his fingers against the steering wheel, willing the light to turn green, “I’m only two miles away.”

“Thanks, Buck.” Connor says, and hangs up without so much of a goodbye. Buck sighs in frustration, before he re-frames his annoyance into determination. He has to get to the fertility clinic and do this. He’d made a promise and it was obvious that Connor and Kameron were beginning to get - almost - as frustrated as he was at the constant rescheduling of appointments.

The light changes, he glances left, then right, and pulls out into the intersection.

There’s a squeal of tires to his left, the thumping bass of a radio cranked to full volume, a sudden crashing sound and lurching feeling as he’s flung to his right, and then to his left.

His head collides with his driver’s side window, his airbags inflating with a bang and spots dance in his vision. He can feel darkness creeping in.

“Siri, call 9-1-1…” He manages to breathe out.

The last thing he hears, before the darkness takes him, is Maddie’s voice.

9-1-1 What’s your emergency?

Hospitals are liminal spaces where time has no meaning - an hour could feel like seconds, a second could feel like hours. They’re busy yet completely still. Full of life and death, sickness and health, happiness and sadness. Buck had no idea how long he paced in the waiting room, wringing his hands and rubbing at his chest. His heart was aching, reaching out for the little girl he’d held for what must have been only minutes but felt like a lifetime.

now i have this image in my head of eddie going to buck and saying my kid is taller than me and being all :((( and buck comforting him or something i dunno

Eddie is not pouting.

He's got no reason too -- it's Chris' 18th birthday, a beautiful day, and his backyard is full of people eating and talking and laughing. Chris is having an absolute ball playing host, flitting from group to group -- Bobby and Athena, his art club friends, Maddie and Chim, Julie from his English class that he's "just talking to" -- with easy smiles and loud laughs. He remembers so vividly the quiet kid he brought to LA, how he clung to his hand on the first day at his new school, shyly waving at his new teacher. He was so small then, head barely at Eddie's elbow, and all he wanted to do in that moment was scoop him up and hold him close and never let him go. He didn't, of course, he told him he'd have fun meeting new people and making new friends, just barely holding himself together as he waved goodbye from the sidewalk.

But now it's 10 years later and his little boy isn't so little anymore. He's so proud of the man Chris is becoming that he could burst with it, but he still just wants to tuck him into his chest and hold him close, gangly limbs and all.

So, okay, he's a little nostalgic. Wistful, even. But he's definitely not pouting.

An arm around his waist and a press of lips to his temple shakes him out of his memories.

"You know," Buck says quietly, even though they're alone in this corner of the yard. "This is Chris' party, not yours. I don't think you get to cry even if you want to."

Eddie laughs and rolls his eyes, but Buck's still looking at him with that I know what's going on in your head better than you do look that Eddie's far too familiar with. He deflates a little, leaning into Buck's side.

Fine. Maybe he was pouting. But only a little.

"He's taller than me," Eddie sighs. "And he's 18 now, he's officially an adult. He's moving to college in six weeks and will start his own life and he won't need me anymore."

Buck squeezes his hip. "He may not be a kid anymore, but he's still your kid. He's always gonna need you."

He watches Julie throw her head back in laughter at something Chris says, grabbing his hand in joy. Chris grabs back with a matching, incandescent smile, and Eddie didn't know his heart could swell and break at the same time.

"Is it bad that I still wish he was eight years old sometimes?"

Buck hums. "I think every parent feels like that. But no matter how old he is, you're always gonna be his hero, and he's always gonna come to you for help or advice or just to share his life with. He was telling Julie all about that call in Runyon last week, made you sound like a superhero."

"It wasn't that crazy of a call."

"Doesn't matter. You're everything to him, you always will be. And everyone who knows him will know that too." Another squeeze to his hip. "You did an amazing job with him."

He turns to Buck, and kisses his cheek. "We did an amazing job."

Chris is back with his friends now, scanning the yard until his eyes fall on Eddie and Buck. He beams and weaves through the yard towards them, and Eddie's helpless but to beam back.

"Dad!" he says, stopping in front of them, glowing so bright with joy it's almost blinding. "Come here! Dylan wants to hear about the time you rode the truck to save that skydiving instructor!"

Chris grabs his hand and pulls him forward, and Eddie holds on tight. Like he always has. Like he always will.
