honestly ezra telling thrawn off for being an art thief and colonizer in the rebels finale deserves a spot up there with iconic star wars moments i said what i said

You know what? You’re completely right and you should say it more.

The way that Thrawn’s leitmotif conforms to Ezra’s lighter style? ‘Things you didn’t make, didn’t earn, things you don’t even understand’? The not so subtle subtext of an indigenous boy telling the colonizer who ruined his planet that his home is so much bigger and more complex and he can never truly have it? Like....he really did tear down Thrawn, the Empire, and the very concept of “benevolent” imperialism in one fell swoop.

Thrawn set out a chessboard and Ezra kicked it across the room. That’s why they’re nemeses. Others might be able to beat him at his game, but Ezra won’t even play it, because Thrawn doesn’t deserve that honor.

You know, I’ve been giving some thought to why they chose Ezra to be the one to deliver that rebuke against Thrawn, given how the series seemed to set up a rivalry between Hera and Thrawn and a lot of people pointed out Thrawn and Sabine’s shared appreciation for art. Ezra and Thrawn didn’t really have those kinds of relationships or share any kind of parallel.

I think I know why now. They chose Ezra precisely because literally their only relationship at that point was that of oppressor and oppressed, occupier and occupied, imperialist and freedom fighter. They wanted to show this type of relationship completely without obscurity.*

*Hera did deliver the first part of the rebuke after Thrawn appropriated her kalikori for himself, but their relationship since then included the dimension of rival commanders.

I honestly wish more SW authors (I mean you, Timothy Zahn) would lean into this aspect of Thrawn more instead of trying to make him a “noble extremist” eliminating ignorant dissidents to establish “order”. Let Thrawn be a villainous imperialist colonizer and fucking own it.
