If Obi-Wan had actually stayed on Mandalore with Satine after the Civil War and left the Jedi Order, it would've made The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones peak comedy.

Like, Qui-Gon would still be sent to Naboo and end up on Tatooine, he'd still meet Anakin and take him back to the Temple. But, in this AU, he survives the battle on Theed and takes Anakin as his padawan. And the entire Order would be making jokes:

"Congrats on the new padawan! Hope he sticks around longer than the last one!" "We'll keep this one off the bodyguard missions, eh Qui-Gon?"

So one day little Anakin’s like "hey master, what happened to your last padawan?" And Qui-Gon's like "oh he ran off with a girl, yeah he's royalty in the Outer Rim now".

And it's all fine and dandy until Anakin’s nineteen and they get assigned to protect Padmé, and Qui-Gon takes one look at this kid's face and thinks "You've got to be fucking kidding me, this shit again??"

“Leia acts like Padme because she’s Leia’s biological mother and its inherited” boring. lame. uninspired. offensive. tasteless

Leia acts like Padme because Bail spent his entire time in the Republic Senate being dragged around on Padme’s adventures and being handed guns by Padme and told to meet her in the docks at midnight and getting into hostage situations with Padme and trying to stop Padme from going full vigilante.

some of Padme’s chaos rubbed off on Bail and adopted Padme’s daughter and was like “I know how this is gonna work” and then raised Leia encouraging her chaos and giving her outlets for it. If Leia acts like Padme, its because Bail encouraged that and so Breha being exhausted is his fault and they both know it

Bail Organa comes across as reasonable because of the amount of time he spends standing next to Padme, but there is a reason Padme is like, his best friend, and the reason is that they are both completely deranged as human beings.

Untrue, Bail is only 98% deranged, that’s why he’s the ‘sane friend’.

anakin went off the deep end at the mere thought of padmé dying but if anakin died padmé would have been fine actually. she would have moved on. she’s a busy lady she’s got things to do

I feel like there would have been a lot of dramatic black robes and other mourning items.

She'd probs also be able to use the "dead husband" excuse to get out of anything and everything.

purge trooper cody, in the middle of the night, suddenly wide awake: oh my god a child is a literal parasite it swallows all the light force juice of their jedi parent and leaves them a sad empty dark oven and this is why jedi aren't allowed to form attachments

in some ways i understand the "anakin fell because he felt possessive attachment for padme" angle, because i guess it could be defined as a kind of possessive, it's just that i disagree with characterizing his base motivation in ROTS as bad in and of itself. i'm not arguing that anakin isn't possessive; he very clearly is, and it's plot-required that he is because if he wasn't, ESB would not exist as it does. it's narratively important that anakin has possessive tendencies you could fly a rocket through, there's no doubt about that, for sure. i'm saying that there's not a universe in which you can argue to me that anakin wanting to save his otherwise healthy and young heavily pregnant wife is actually an expression of a possessive urge, and therefore a bad thing. you literally can't argue that the motivation to save padme is inherently flawed on its own. the singular point of anakin wanting padme and their child to be alive and happy, to be a family, is totally fine.

the whole point anakin's (second, i should say) descent into murder wasn't that his initial motivation is bad; on the contrary, i think it's very normal to want to stop your wife from dying. that's a very normal, natural things to want, and those motivations alone can't be classified as possessive. the tragedy here, like all classic tragedies, is that everything would have been fine, had anakin simply not had any of the following glaring character flaws that were easily exploitable by Voted Worst Man In The Galaxy, Sheev Palpatine:

  • a nearly limitless capacity for violence and a deep disregard for it as fundamentally a bad thing, and an equally nearly limitless ability to create justifications for that violence.
  • the also nearly limitless ability to justify any kind of horrific act or ask from someone he cares for simply because he cares for them; palpatine isn't correct about his vision for the galaxy because his vision is ultimately better in anakin's eyes, palpatine's correct because anakin likes him. and if palpatine is wrong, then clearly padme should take the empire, and then it'll be right because anakin likes her better than he likes palpatine. please revisit the part where his You Should Romance Me pitch to padme was, "i will do anything you ask."
  • the furthermore nearly limitless capacity he has to assume, even when given absolutely no evidence, that the people he loves don't love him back because they don't share his utterly insane ability to throw away everything they are for his sake the same way that he does for them. truly a mystery as to why anakin associates being valued by someone else with a full sacrifice of personhood, really have to think hard about where he got that one. it is, nevertheless, a horrific thing for him to try to expect from anyone, and yet he'll go on to expect the same thing from luke.
  • and, of course, a temper that renders him fuck off bonkers, paired with an arrogance that's only attainable if you haven't checked in with reality since your mom died
  • the perfect storm of the above lands you the absolute mess anakin is on mustafar, where he's parroting palpatine's lines because palpatine is his father-figure and that clearly makes him right about everything. the jedi had to die because palpatine said they did, and oh, look, here's a convenient list of grievances and resentments to reference to justify that carnage, which totally works because it does don't ask questions, but also fuck palpatine because padme is Better so let's go kill palpatine and give her the empire. but palpatine's still right that there needs to be one. who cares about not personally being for fascism? what does fascism have to do with it? this about True Love Babey, and then padme's refusal to like, go as absolutely buckwild as anakin has chosen to be, combined with obi-wan's appearance, activates the fuck off bonkers temper. neither of you love me because neither of you are willing to throw away your life's work and your most deeply held morals for my sake!!!!! that's enough justification for all this violence i'm going to do!!!!!!!!!!! Murder Time Babey.

which is all to say, anakin is the exact polar opposite of being right, and he's utterly fucked up in every conceivable way. he hasn't so much as fallen to the dark side as he has plummeted full-speed into the dark side like a flaming comet ripping down from space. in the collective span of a day he has hacked off 99.9% of good things about himself and willingly sold it to palpatine on the off chance that palpatine would help him, because thanks to a number of pretty hideous flaws, he's actually capable of going that low. in my opinion, the narrative purpose of anakin's crowning moment of heinous destruction in AOTC is to establish the pattern of anakin having very normal strong feelings about a traumatic event and then, instead of behaving rationally, he goes absolutely off the rails in a way that's pretty fucking terrible. anakin's a pretty reliable engine; you insert trauma, and war crimes come out.

but the actual motivation itself, the motivation to protect people he cares about from needlessly dying, that 0.1% that manages to survive, is both the core motivation of his fall and his eleventh hour redemption in ROTJ. it is, actually, plot-required that anakin's urge to protect the people he loves was never the problem, as it is literally his Sole Redeeming Quality. the actual problem was that the lengths he was willing to go for that protection in ROTS involved selfishly motivated violence and therefore compromising everything he stood for, everything he believed in, and by rights his own actual personhood. and then, because he cared about palpatine and therefore believed in palpatine's divine vision. the reason ESB is such a horrific low for anakin, morally, is because anakin betrays the one (1) principle he has, because in his time as vader he fell so far he lost even that. anakin kept making the active choice to be a bastard for over two decades until luke quite literally forced him to remember who he was, which was a jedi like his son after him and a compassionate man, and to reclaim it from the one person he sold all those pieces of himself off to - Notably The Worst Man In The Galaxy, sheev palpatine.

This post: Anakin's obsessive attachment to his wife wasn't his problem. His love for his wife was fine, it was the fact that he was obsessive about his attachment to her that fucked everything up.

i know this is intended negatively, but that's actually a fair enough summary of my point. the narrative structure of star wars demands that love be anakin's sole redeeming quality, and while he's plagued with a myriad of other hideous issues that drive him quite literally insane, the inclination he has to love people is the actual best part of him, which is by demand of the narrative itself. because it's the part that facilitates the titular return of the jedi, that saves luke and also the galaxy. so, in essence, yes, absolutely, anakin's love for padme was not fundamentally wrong, but the fact that he was morally warped in enough places that he decided a genocide was a workable answer definitely was. on a list of "issues in anakin skywalker to solve" the fact that he loves people comes in dead last, while "has such a breathtaking lack of empathy for others he considers slaughter an acceptable solution to a problem" seems like it should come in first.

I haven't watched the prequels in quite some time and I'm not deep into the lore so forgive me if I my observation entirely misses some things. I just wanted to add that a part of the attachment issue was how Palpatine got to him. We could easily ask "why wasn't Obi-wan or Mace Windu or someone else the father figure?"

They were rigid to the Jedi practices, meaning while they were certainly wise and good men, they didn't let their interactions stray too far into the fatherly territory. Palpatine took advantage of that and made Anakin feel special, listened to his worries and complaints, developed a trust that would be nearly indestructible. If Anakin's attachment with Padme wasn't already one kind of obsession, his with Palpatine was a different monster.

With the slavery and then the child soldiering and already marrying in secret, it took virtually nothing to radicalize him against the Jedi order. And it's actually pretty understandable from his point of view? Like, the rest of the galaxy can go on having families and trying to just live their lives and only hope to stay safe from whatever terrorizes them, but a Jedi Master has to cut those off? For what, being more powerful? For the potential upending of an order that is merely one extreme pitted against the other? It's so based on a fear of the dark than an understanding of it or at least navigation through it, and those would provide a foundation or a lifeline of some kind when the threat of loss arises.

This line of thought isn't entirely dangerous. The danger rises in understanding that Anakin totally forgets himself and his position, including all the points mentioned above, and it's a dark, acidic stew of violence that strips him of what he desires most and destroys nearly the whole order all at once. All Sheev had to do was meddle with his feelings just enough and watch the symphony play out.

It's the tragedy of proving that attachment is not inherently evil, but Anakin doesn't fully get to understand what that means and neither do the rest of the Jedi because while Padme (and Luke and Leia) did not pose any threat to the balance, Palpatine did, and those two attachments combined were deadly.
