I didn’t expect so much love for a bullet point fanfic but thank you!

When Jon stops the Watchers Crown the reason the world resets to episode one is because it goes back to the first cemented step of the chosen one (when he was promoted to Archivist).
Basically reseting the world was the relocking the chest and erasing Jon was throwing away the key.
Elias’ whole plan is crafting a key. Now that Jon’s never existed he’s just doing it with Sasha.
The ArchiveCrew refer to Jon as Joe Spooky

Jon is now kind of panicking because he Knows Elias is focusing on him now, AND Daisy is Hunting him.
He ends up running into Breekon and Hope (who escaped the Desolation’s destruction of the Unknowing) and manages to kind of ally with them by saying he’ll help keep them together.
They laugh at him at first but he Shows them Breekon’s statement and tells them that they really do want what he can offer
They don’t exactly know how the eye works so don’t question him showing them a hypothetical future as fact.
They’re much more guarded of each other now but Jon only knows this because he Knows it.
He then stops Looking at them as much as he can as a show of good faith.
Kind of friends now? They agree to give him a ride if he needs it at least.
Also he’s kind of befriended some of the medical students (who were also being transported by Breekon and Hope.
Decides he’s going to actually confront Sasha and maybe help out Daisy even if he’s terrified.
Decides to waits for her by her house (maybe arrange for them to meet in the tunnels without Elias Seeing her)
Is thinking/Knowing so hard about how to avoid Elias he didn’t react fast enough when he heard a scream to avoid getting attacked.
Oops Tim and Martin were coming to drop off some treats and Martin had followed a friendly little spider around the wall and saw the spooky library man waiting by Sasha’s door! He screamed and Tim came running.
When he saw it was the weird stalker monster thing (that had been around every bad thing that had happened in the past year or so AND knew about Danny AND was obsessed with Sasha AND looked at Martin like he wanted to grab him and run or something AND stopped them from stopping the unknowing) looking- looking- at Martin (outside Sasha’s house!) like he knew everything about them, well, yeah his flight or fight instincts went FIGHT and he tackled him.
Note - Tim’s just exhausted as he was in cannon. Things just boiled over here, he doesn’t actually have that much hate for Jon. Jon’s just in a position that’s very easy to mistrust (and Tim’s a little upset and worried that he didn’t personally get to make sure the circus freaks were killed. With all the weird lies he’s lived through it could’ve been some kind of trick.
Anyway, Tim’s got Jon on the ground demanding answers and threatening to punch his lights out if he didn’t spill. (Jon may have spooky powers but he’s still small and Tim is still buff as hell, also he’s really not trying to fight Tim, or use his powers, still feeling too guilty for that, just defend himself.)
Martin’s trying to get Tim to calm down because this guy HELPED them, remember? Also they have no idea what he (he?) is and maybe it’s not a good idea to threaten the spooky eye man with powers they don't understand.
Jon is about to cry because A) Martin is being nice to him and B) Tim’s still protecting his friends.
Tim and feel awkward because they can see this “Joe Spooky” about the bawl like he’s watching a bittersweet romcom but they don’t change.
Jon calms down from his overwhelmed state and explains that if they want information that’s exactly what he’s here to give. He was waiting for Sa- uh, the Archivist to see if they could get away from Jo- Elias’ gaze.
Tim’s like “huh?”
Jon clarifies “Uh. Elais. He’s… evil. Sees us. Knows stuff. Like me but evil. Might need to go someplace where he doesn’t know. Maybe… my house? But yeah our- your boss is evil. Sorry.”
Martin and Tim shrug like “honestly? Makes sense.”
Then they wait for Sasha. It’s very tense and awkward they’re all just on her steps. Martin is still holding the cake.

Meanwhile-

Oops Melanie is having an anxiety attack because THEY JUST GAVE A STATEMENT TO THE ARCHIVIST OF THE MAGNUS INSTITUTE! ARE THEY GONNA DIE? WHAT? WHAT HAPPENS?
Georgie is half heartedly keeping her from threatening Sasha. She knows she (probably) won’t FIGHT them but even with no fear she’s very uncomfortable about the situation.
Daisy is standing in front of (a very apologetic and concerned) Sasha while Barisa is trying to keep everything under control.
Everyone kind of calms down and they think about it
Sasha wonders aloud why Mr Spooky would want them, what seemed like friends? to stay away from her, especially when he acted like the Archivcrew were his friends too?
Barisa starts to list what they know about him but is interrupted by Georgie going “MR SPOOKY?”
Sasha bashfully explains that “Joe Spooky” had been a name her teammate came up with and it kind of stuck to the point of it unironically being his name…?
Everyone starts laughing or complaining about it and ragging on it until another, dizzying, laugh broke through theirs.
“Well, I think that’s absolutely adorable!” Everyone froze. Daisy jumped to her feet.
It was Micheal! Standing in his doorway! He was there to cause problems on purpose!
“His name, and yes, I believe he still prefers ‘he’ (no matter how much of a what he becomes), is Jon. He’s told me quite a lot! We’re quite good friends… this time around.” Micheal laughed again and the room felt like it slowly spun. “Unlike you.” his voice turned jokingly sour. “You all rather hated him I think, such a shame too, as far as I can tell he was rather stupid. It must’ve been so entertaining!”
Daisy is going to try to kill him.
Georgie and Melanie feel weirdly guilty and angry about this thing talking about “Jon.”
Sasha feels oddly indifferent, like she should be sad but there’s just not enough there… and that was a tragedy for some reason she didn’t get…
She demands he explain
Micheal covers her mouth saying something about a rude Archivist trick that was and tells them that Jon is who told Micheal anything, and has decided to finally tell her. He is waiting for Sasha now, at her house, with her friends, and that they aught to all head back home.
“oh and be careful about how Martin and hin interact. I have a feeling them fighting will do much more damage than anything else-”
Daisy shoots at Micheal, or tries. The door slams shut on her and the bullet disappears.
…well shit time to go find (possibly rescue) Martin and Tim

Cryptid Jon (Blind Eye AU)

An AU where Jon prevents himself from finishing the watcher’s crown. He shut the eye but in doing so kind of resets everything and he gets erased from existence somehow.

If you wanna do something more with this be my guest btw, write, draw, whatever. Don’t even have to credit i’m just throwing stuff out here.

Things get reset back to episode one basically
Although Jon doesn’t and has never existed there’s no real butterfly effect from this, things are the same but he’s absent.
Archivist!Sasha?
None of the Fears nor their avatars are aware of him, not even the web or eye.
In fact he’s a blind spot for the eye, at least to Jonah.
He’s still got those good good Archivist powers and can fight avatars, it just doesn’t feed the eye like it used to. Just him. They’re HIS powers now.
He decides he should keep his distance because w h a t t h e h e l l he is NOT rushing into this one. Keeping his card close as he can.
Basically tries to secretly help out the Archivist Crew with as much self control as he can. (LOTS of angst from the shadows about Tim, Sasha, Martin)
Lives in the tunnels and chats with Leitner some before he gets piped.
“accidentally” Fails to mention to Leitner that there’s a pipe with his name on it.
Meets Michael and they’re kinda buds now(?)
He kind of reveals himself preventing the Jane Prentiss attack.
Manages to stop the Not!Them from taking anyone.
Everyone’s just worried and confused like “oh no there’s another monster and he knows all about us?”
except Elias who is kind of freaking out because he has no idea who that is and he can’t See it either what the fuuuuuuu but files it in the back of his head as some weird Darkness Avatar and maybe it can mark Sasha.
Elias is trying to build the watchers crown with Sasha now btw because he has no idea of what happened before.

Well shit, Basira is looking into him now because he managed to still be blamed for Leitner’s murder.
This wouldn’t be a problem if Daisy (currently unchecked avatar of the Hunt) wasn’t helping her GF.
Jon’s out of the tunnels now because the Archive Crew’s exploring. (Not!Them escaped and is staying away from the Eye’s domain so it’s not trapped there. Preparing for the unknowing probably.)
Jon makes some knew friends! (The other Avatars) They hate him! Very Much!
Jon’s actually become a bit infamous among the things of the fears as this (supposed) Avatar to The Eye that just keeps fucking their stuff up.
Micheal is just loving watching everyone pull their hair about this. He’s still taking people though (Helen…)
Peter complains about it to Elias. Elias has moved him up a few spaces on his his concern list.
Meanwhile Sasha, Tim, and Martin have also shifted their focus to that strange man that helped(?) them, supposedly clocked an old man to death, then vanished.
He shows up in statements sometimes and they’re debating on wether he’s a monster or some kind of monster hunter or maybe just a friendly-ish monster…
Tim think’s he’s good because he killed the worms (and stopped a circus mannequin in one statement), Martin’s cautious because he showed up at his house right before the worms attacked him and Sasha’s torn and undecided.
Sasha and Daisy have a fight like Daisy and Jon did but it gets sorted in a similar way except with less Elias hate.
Elias doesn’t face as much resistance in this au so doesn’t let his mask slip as much but he is being thrown so off by Jon.
Elias gets less hate because everyones focusing more on Jon aka strange library man aka Joe Spooky.
But I cannot stress enough how much worse this is for him than cannon.

Melanie and Georgie are on a date or something when they come home to find a stranger petting the Admiral. Freaking out they jump to fight (Melanie)/call the police (Georgie) but the man stands up apologizing they froze.
Having him look directly at them made them feel like he was looking at every layer of them, from clothes to skin to bone.
It felt like he could riffle through their minds like a file cabinet but (even worse) like he didn’t need too. Like he already knew everything he wanted to about them.
He said they clearly didn’t recognize him, disappointed, like they should have, and that he just needed something familiar to be with for a while (gesturing to the cat).
He then mumbled something about recommending they avoid travel for a while and started to walk briskly (almost… awkwardly?) past them to the door.
He paused halfway out the door and mumbled to “stay away from The Magnus Institute, especially the Archivist. Don’t give them anything and whatever you do-”
He turned, and they could feel him seeing something about themselves even they didn’t know, all apologeticness gone from his character. “Do. Not. Give. A statement.”
They knew- they KNEW- with every fiber of their beings that he meant them no harm but would bring it regardless. In that moment, with every fiber of their beings, they knew.
Then he blinked and hurried out before either of them could snap to their senses.
They filled out a police report and tried to forget it but could constantly swear they caught glimpses of him around their neighborhood after that.

Oh Boy The Web Keeps Trying To Wrap Itself Around Jon But It’s Not Working And It’s Pissing It Off!
The Unknowing happens much earlier
Eventually they go to stop the unknowing (guided by Elias) along with Basira and Daisy.
Nikola actually kidnapped Jon because she was obsessed with this “stranger” and thought he’d be fun for the ritual.
Micheal frees him and Helen shows up but they don’t kill each other.
Micheal liiiives.
Instead The Archive Crew finds a door opening up and the strange man from the tunnels assures them that the unknowing will fail whether they do anything or not.
He warns Sasha (and subconsciously Tim) especially to stay away from the stranger.
He lets slip a BUNCH more of way more personal information he knows about them to convince them to stay away.
He also warns them to not trust Elias. After Matin went “but Elias said-“
Sasha want to know what The Stranger means.
Tim does not like this. Neither does Daisy. They end up trying to fight Jon. Jon refuses to fight and let’s slip something about The Hunt controlling Daisy then bolts back into Helen’s door.
The Archivcrew end up being stalled enough that by the time they get there the whole place is aflame. (Thanks Jude….)
Tim and Martin have switched opinions of him. Tim distrusts him now and Martin feels he’s an ally, at least. Sasha has decided that whatever he is he’s information and goes on a search to find him with Daisy (uh oh) and Basira.
They end up going to where a break in was reported, nothing stolen and the description of a short, heavily scarred man with long hair matched their spooky man. (It’s Georgie’s house.)
Georgie and Melanie accidentally end up giving a statement which made for a very awkward moment when they said he said to not give anything to the Archivist and Sasha had to clear her throat and mention that she is the Archivist. Oops.
Meanwhile Elias is going nuts because now this blind spot has actively disrupted his plans. Jon has his full attention.
Elias (…Jonah) is patient. He’s waited so long for this, putting plans on hold to stomp out an unwanted rock in the road is fine.

So Martin and Jon get sent back in time only planning to end up in their past bodies and fix things…they don;t end up in their bodies.

Nope, they end up in other Avatars bodies.

Jon accidentally body snatching Elias.

So, normally I am a big fan of Peter Lukas tormenting Martin, probably as much as Peter, himself, is a fan of Peter tormenting Martin. But! Since the goal of kidnapping Martin is to annoy Elias, he has to Behave. Because Elias will be waaaaay more annoyed if Martin seeks Peter out willingly.

So Martin’s time with Peter goes… really well, actually? For Martin at least.

Martin does suspect he’s going to get murdered any second. And he is exasperated at Peter not answering any of his questions. But Peter drives him to a grey, lonely-touched hotel and is like “Alright I’ll pick you up in like 8 hours byyyyye.”

And so Martin, for the first time, gets to sit alone and be reassured he isn’t watched. Martin proceeds to take a long bath and sleep for the rest of the 8 hours.

Peter sits outside and grins as his phone blows up with missed calls and angry texts from Elias, who has been given a MASSIVE migraine from the Eye throwing a temper tantrum at precious Martin being gone.

Elias knows Peter is ignoring him on purpose and decides to divorce him. He then realizes they aren’t married, so he resolves to propose the next time they meet specifically so he can spite-divorce him over this.

Meanwhile the Archives crew collectively lose their fucking minds. Sasha paces wildly and throws together a red string board trying to figure out his location based on all of his last moves. Tim is pulling double-time emotional labor to get the others to keep it together, in between putting his face in his hands and trying very hard not to cry. If Melanie is there at this point, she’s raging and kicking things and going “FINE he can LEAVE THEN. I don’t care, I don’t, I REFUSE--”

Jon is probably the biggest mess out of them all. The eldritch migraine he’s having is the worst.. He flips from doing what Sasha is, to lashing out at everyone else for not helping more (which gets Tim to switch from nice to snarling right back), to blaming himself, to laying on the floor and sobbing.

And then, after all of this hullabaloo, Martin wakes up to Peter telling him he’ll take him back to the Institute now, if Martin so chooses. Martin cringes at the thought, but decides… he has to. They ride in silence until they are right in front of the Institute and Martin has just stepped out, at which point Peter says.

“Oh, word of advice. Considering that the Ceaseless Watcher has taken a fancy to you, you’d best start to look around for things that block it out. It’s tiring enough with just one of them after you.”

“The Ceaseless--what?”’

Peter then proceeds to drive off assholishly, and Martin gets mobbed by frantically affectionate eyevatars.

Oh I am so glad you asked!

Sasha, of course, isn’t dead or replaced. Jon refused to allow that to happen, so he got the jump on Not!Them and now that problem is safely encased in concrete at the bottom of the ocean.

Thing is–Jon didn’t account for how much having Sasha around would change things?

Sasha is just really observant and–worse–super curious and persistent. Martin is definitely the first one to get suspicious of Jon’s personality change, but Martin is mostly interested in, well, self-preservation? So as long as he’s reasonably sure Jon isn’t a doppelgänger who’s going to eat him, he’s not going to go poking around Jon’s business. But Sasha–

Once Sasha gets a whiff of the supernatural about Jon, she goes nuts.

She doesn’t stalk him the way Jon stalked Tim in canon, but she starts to Observe very carefully. Notice the irregularities in his schedule, along with certain quirks like suddenly burning statements or prying the floorboards out of his office to find Gertrude’s keys.

Maybe Michael tips her off even more–no worms for Michael to warn her about, so maybe he’d rather plant the unease of whether or not she can trust her boss.

Anyway, this leads to Sasha peeking in on Jon going into the tunnels and she goes nuts.

Sasha isn’t really good at common sense. Observation, yes. Research, very much so. Privacy violation that’s subtle enough that she won’t piss anyone off the way Jon does in canon, absolutely. But her impulse control is almost as bad as Jon’s.

She follows him in. Tries to sneak, only for Jon to whirl on her and find her and–

“Jon!” she says. “What are you–”

“What are you doing in here?

Sasha stares at him for a moment, before going, oh to hell with it. “Well, I was following you!”

Jon, not expecting an answer that honest, stares. “What–you couldn’t just ask?”

“Well, of course I could ask! But I wanted to sneak up on you instead,” Sasha says, impatient as she is nervous. Too much so to be able to lie. “So you couldn’t–hide anything?”

Jon stares.

“I mean, you’ve been…” she trails off. “You’ve been doing some supernatural research, haven’t you? Real stuff, like in Artefact storage. I saw you burning–oh! Have you been looking into Leitners?”

“Leitn–you know about those?”

“I was in Artefact Storage,” Sasha sniffs. “If you’ve been burning stuff then–well, makes sense? Anyway, um. Since sneaking up on you hasn’t worked out…. any chance you will just, tell me?”

Because she’s really curious. Burningly curious. Jon stares at her a moment, clamps his jaw shut, remembers his resolution to not speak anything he knows out loud lest Elias be listening…

…and then he realizes he’s in the tunnels. Where the Eye can’t look in.

“Sasha,” he says, before he can think better of it. “I’m from the future.”

And! And! That’s how Jon finally, finally gets to tell someone. How he makes his first close ally. His first real friend and confidante.

It makes all the difference.

Ok, ok, I have a take on this that goes… in a different direction.

So a question here is “why isn’t Elias doing anything about this” and you kinda wave it off and that’s valid but my quick thought was maybe Jon’s ‘much, much further along archivist powers than Elias could reasonably expect’ could allow him to….spoof his own info. Be a blind spot. Something like that.

And where my mind jumps to with that from the concept of Sasha tracking Jon to the tunnels and personally getting details on incriminating information, i.e putting this stuff in a place Elias can read

Is Jon being like “huh. Fuck. So don’t freak out, but by the time we leave these tunnels, we need to have a solid plan for immediately rushing to Elias Bouchard and murdering him as fast as possible, before he can get his guard up”

Love, love, LOVE these thoughts. But I will say one thing:

I did put thought into the Elias reading minds thing and how that would work out for Jon’s schemes. I don’t think that Jon would be more powerful (I actually think that coming back required him sacrificing a great portion of his power, but the trade-off is that now he can do important things like “stop reading a statement mid-way.” Less power, more autonomy, if that makes sense.) Still! I also had the idea of Jon being a blindspot.

Problem is? Jon has no idea that he is.

Jon has been operating under the assumption that Elias can still read his mind. That he may already have read Jon’s mind and is toying with him. The paranoia has been awful, and Jon has lost a lot of sleep over it.

The only reason Jon isn’t convinced that he has is that–Elias has demonstrated laziness about reading his employees minds.

Elias didn’t look into Martin’s head to see what he had planned at the end of S3. He didn’t look into Melanie’s head and see the plan after she had outright tried to kill him. Gertrude was running around blowing up rituals for decades, subverting every power there was and clearly would have done the same for the Eye, and Elias never looked inside her mind even though that obviously would have been useful information!

Elias can see almost anything he wants to in the world. But he doesn’t because he finds people boring, insignificant, or unpleasant.

That’s what Jon has been relying on. And there is no more reason for Elias to take an interest in Sasha. There is likely even less reason than Jon, who is the Archivist. Still, Jon’s blurting out the truth moment was definitely a strike of impulsivity. Right afterwards he realizes that there are now more minds that Elias could read and find out the truth, and that’s a strike against him.

So there is still that ah shit moment. But is the risk enough that he would potentially doom Martin, Tim, and Sasha to die as they kill Elias?

Hmmmm.

So what Jon says might be more like. “Hey, Sasha, really quick before we go out though: we need to come up with a plan to quickly murder Elias in case we discover he has potentially read our minds. How do you feel about pocket knives?”

And Sasha, who Jon had not yet cued in to Elias being a mind reader during his big ol’ infodump, chokes.

Dumb TMA time travel AU's I probably won't get around to writing

S5 Jon possesses S1 Jon but like. Only long enough to murder Jonah Magnus and say something extremely cryptic before fainting. S1 Jon wakes up with No Clue as to what just happened.
Jonah eyeballs Jon or Martin and travels back as them to either stop himself or tweak his plan so it's Perfect. He does not think to tell Elias about this.
S2 Jon shows up in the safehouse. Neither Jon or Martin notice until they go to look for the tape recorder, which S2 Jon has stolen to record supplementals. He is, of course, convinced he's going to be murdered, while jmart are just being insufferably domestic in the background.
S3 Jon shows up in the safehouse super traumatized after Helen pulls him from the circus. This one's not funny I just want him to get some Fucking Therapy.

Melanie travels back in time but Jon doesn't take her seriously because of her whole ghost hunter thing and blatantly does the opposite of what she tells him.

then theres tim and sasha, where sasha doesnt know that something replaced her, and tim finally being able to see her true self again. the joy tim feels when he can finally know what she was like, but the intense anger at The Stranger for daring to take her away the first time.

Martin being overwhelmed with so much to stop before elias can catch on and not noticing jon slowly fading in the background, only to throw himself back into the place he once stood to pull jon out of it

Elias being equal parts confused, overjoyed, and angry because 1. why are his archive staff suddenly acting so strange? why is tim about to strangle someone and why does martin have a blindspot on the beholding's view? 2. holy shit he practically got another archivist with martin's actions, always good to have a backup, and 3. what the hell is going on he might have to speed up his plan after all

and we cant forget Jon going from confused to likely quite afraid to Lonely, first having no clue whats gotten into his assistants, then being afraid of tim's open hostility, and then noticing how truly lonely he is and giving into it. Out of the assistants, i think it would be tim's hostility to make Jon realise he was alone; s1 tim was the kind of guy you couldn't easily get on the bad side of, so jon must've deserved it and thus should isolate to keep everyone safe from himself, whatever he did (like how he said he deserved his childhood bullying becuase he was 'annoying') (but hey, thats just a theory, a- [gunshot])

and then the eventual "wait, you guys know?" conversation the three get into, and start planning together instead of seperately, although tim still refuses to let anyone else take down the stranger and unknowing, his own health be damned (he survives, if in a 6-month-coma way)

and who knows whats going on with basira, melanie, daisy, and georgie (or, The Sapphic Quartet)

The knocking stops so abruptly it actually takes Martin a minute to notice, the phantom echoes of it still rattling in his mind. It’s the voices that make him realize something has changed. They’re muffled, indistinct, and he’s wary of getting too close to the door still. But after a moment of silence, he can’t resist anymore, pressing an ear to the wood.

The sound of the worms is still there, but it’s different now. More spasm than writhe. And beyond them, a man is not so much speaking as... as intoning.

“- the agony of all your noxious devotion. Ceaseless Watcher, see this parasite in all its pitiful, writhing forms. Hear its sour song, feel its ravenous love. It. is. yours.”

Martin can only describe the sound that follows as a shriek because he has no stronger words. It’s a distorted, agonized scream that stabs through him and rattles his bones, and for all he’d been terrified by Prentiss lurking outside his door, the idea of something that could make her make a sound like that is paralyzing. For minutes, or maybe hours, he stands frozen with a hand hovering over the door knob petrified of what he might find on the other side. And for that entire time, not a single sound filters through from the hall.

Finally, he can’t take it any longer. Bracing himself, Martin eases the door open. He wants to breathe a sigh of relief when no worms flood in, but he can’t, because there’s still something standing in his hall, staring straight at him. Something that looks like-

“Jon?” Martin asks, perturbed and shaken and maybe a bit irritated. “What- what are you doing here? Where- Did you see Prentiss? What happened to her? What happened to you?”

“Martin Blackwood,” Jon says- because it is Jon, right? He sounds like Jon. He looks like Jon... mostly. Except now that Martin is looking, there are several scars that he doesn’t remember Jon having, that he could almost swear were closing eyes just a moment ago. His hair is longer than Jon’s should be. His face is gaunter. He’s... shaking. “Are you afraid?”

long post ahead I'm sorry-

crack au where Jonah Magnus is a good guy but everything keeps going wrong and he spends all of his time running around trying to stop his employees from diving headfirst into their Fuck Up™ of the week

in this au Jonah is almost entirely incompetent but he's got the exasperated parent thing down enough to make up for his lack of braincells

he's also at least 7% dumber than he is in canon

s1 Jon: please call pest control there are so many worms

s1 Elias: I already did

Jon: and??

Elias: they ate them

Jon: the worms?

Elias: the pest control guys. the worms ate them

Elias spends the entirety of season 2 desperately trying to convince Jon that none of them killed Gertrude (in this au Gertrude just had a stroke or something in the tunnels). Elias stops Jon from destroying the table but a week later something heavy falls on it and the NotThem escapes anyway. Elias bashes in Leitner's head with a pipe after mistaking him for the monster and Jon gets framed.

now Elias has to convince this hunter that Jon is innocent while Jon runs around and harasses various fear avatars (who are all very amused with Elias' wayward Archivist). Jon assumes Elias knows nothing about all this bullshit because Elias is just his weird and uptight boss who accidentally killed someone, he can't possibly know that there are literally fear gods ruling over them

Elias RACES to Mike's house but he. he fucking misses them. the Beholding helpfully tells him that they're all going back to the Institute so Basira and Daisy can interrogate him, which isn't ideal, he'd really like to not go to jail, so he drafts up an employment contract on the way back and barely manages to escape the whole thing with his life intact.

then he explains everything to Jon because if Jon is going to end up being the Archivist, being uninformed won't do. Jon becomes the Archivist completely on accident and Elias is desperately trying to make all of this work because, haha, the Unknowing is coming up, and Elias is not in the fucking mood to deal with clowns.

since he's still a coward Elias sends Michael to go fetch Jon, only finding out after the fact that he very nearly almost signed Jon's death warrant. Elias is now speedrunning Jon's development because fuck the Unknowing is coming up really quickly and Tim is a self destructive mess and Melanie keeps trying to stab Elias and Martin is a pining idiot and goddammit he didn't sign up for this

Elias prepares Jon the best he can for the Unknowing, because even though he knows the ritual will fail, the Circus can still cause a considerable amount of damage and he needs them out of the way.

the Unknowing happens. Jon ends up in a wack ass coma, Tim is dead, Daisy's in the coffin, and Basira is starting to look like the better choice of Archivist because jesus christ Jon has no self preservation instinct. Elias doesn't get arrested this time around but his ex husband starts coming by the Institute and fucking with all his employees. and the Flesh is attacking. jesus. goddamn.

Elias keeps trying to teach Jon how to pick certain victims to feed off of because personally he has no qualms about feeding from innocents but Jon!! actually trusts him!!! so Elias doesn't want to push Jon into making decisions that will offend his moral sensitivities.

things are actually going okay for a while. Elias starts going home at a reasonable time in the evenings and Jon is actually getting some sleep. and then-

Elias is having a nice dream about Peter trying to fish Simon Fairchild out of a sky filled with eyes when he abruptly sits up in bed, wide awake.

"Ah, fuck," he says to Peter, who is laying on the floor where it is Lonelier™. "Jon's doing something stupid. I Know it."

Peter's mumbled "isn't he always" goes unnoticed as Elias hurries to the Institute, where he finds a fucking rib on Jon's desk and the coffin in the middle of the room.

it takes three days for Elias to find Martin.

"Please tell me why the fuck you're dabbling in the Lonely," Elias says as Martin steps sheepishly out of the fog.

"Ah. Well. Jon can't See into it very well and sometimes we like to spice up our se-"

"Stop before I have to gouge my eyes out again."

"A-Again-?"

Elias drags Martin back to the Institute. Martin starts setting tapes on the coffin because "Jon loves these" and Elias starts bashing his head into the wall.

Jon climbs out of the coffin with Daisy and Elias almost considers locking Jon in his office so the damn archivist can't do anything else ridiculous. instead, Elias very calmly takes Jon by the shoulders, and shakes him like a rag doll.

"Stop fucking with entities, you stupid, stupid man," Elias says, shaking Jon more viciously now.

after several hours of breathing exercises Elias returns to his house and doesn't take his Sight off of Jon for the rest of the night, which is a fun experience for Peter when he wakes up and finds Elias' bloodshot eyes staring directly at him in the morning.

Elias' only goal now is to keep Jon and his assistants from pulling any more wild stunts without his supervision. his renewed involvement with the archival staff results in a few things he'd hoped to avoid: drink invites, physical contact (Martin is surprisingly quick to start hugging Elias once he realizes Elias won't stop him), and- shudder -feelings. because Elias genuinely cares about his staff and doesn't want any harm to befall them. especially Jon. Jon is his Archivist, the only one to ever succeed like this, and Elias will be damned if he lets anything happen to him.

"Why do you care?" Jon asks, once, compulsion thrumming like static on his tongue. "About us, I mean. I would've assumed you'd want to perform the Beholding's ritual."

Jonah Magnus attempted the Watcher's Crown once, when he was young and new. he'd brought his patron close, but not all the way through, and the backlash of power killed all the inmates at Millbank and severely crippled Jonah's connection to the Eye for months afterward. he grew to assume that the Beholding simply preferred the world as it was--ripe with fear for watching. it didn't need a ritual.

he instead dedicated himself to growing stronger, cultivating his Institute of knowledge, his stronghold. if he tore out a few people's eyes when he got too old, then, well, collateral. but he doesn't want the world to end, and knows now that no ritual will ever succeed unless it brings in all the Powers at once. and he doesn't want that either.

it's concerning to him that Jon seems to be collecting marks regardless. the only ones he's missing are the Dark and the Lonely, and Elias is determined to keep it that way.

he explains all of this to Jon who, to his credit, takes it pretty well. Jon is fascinated with historic life and Elias spends some time simply recounting tales of his youth, when he still bore the name Magnus.

they bond. it's good.

and one day Basira does a little too much research and discovers the dark sun waiting in Ny Alesund. she insists they need to go and see what's left of the People's Church, they need to ensure everything is taken care of. Jon is rather insistent too. and Elias wouldn't have been inclined to let them go, except Peter was finally home after weeks at sea, and it wasn't like Jon was defenseless, he could call Elias if anything went wrong...

so, very reluctantly, Elias gives them the all clear. Basira, Jon, and Martin head north, and Elias almost forgets they've gone when he arrives home and Peter already has dinner prepared.

Jon comes back marked by the Dark.

Elias curses himself, over and over, for being foolish enough to let them go, for not keeping a closer eye on them. he knows the ritual won't work unless a certain incantation is spoken, so he'll just have to keep world-ending written chants away from Jon. easy. and it's not like Jon will even get marked by the Lonely. Peter wouldn't.

(but Martin doesn't have the same level of control, and sometimes...)

it's an accident. Martin and Jon are testing it, pushing the boundaries, when Martin pulls them both into the Lonely. Elias threatens divorce until Peter caves and fetches them, but it's too late. Jon has been marked by all fourteen Powers.

Elias tells him, and warns him to check everything he reads.

Elias gets a sinking feeling in his stomach, and beside him, Peter looks alarmed. meanwhile, in his flat with Martin making tea in the other room, Jon has a statement clutched in his grasp.

Hello, Jon.

I would apologize for the deception, but I'm afraid that's quite what I'm good at. I'm not one to monologue, that's more Jonah's shtick, so shall we get on with things?

I admit I underestimated Jonah Magnus. He's still remarkably easy to manipulate, but when he abandoned the Watcher's Crown ritual I knew I would have to take a different approach. The Mother is not so satisfied with the world as she may have insinuated. It is our turn to rise, Jon.

At the age of eight, you were marked by us. We sent you to the Magnus Institute in the hopes that a new Archivist would rekindle Jonah's desire to end the world. Unfortunately, it seemed as though he grew fond of you, and so we brought in a new plan. We marked you. One fear at a time. Jonah gave an admirable attempt at protecting you, but ultimately, he is an incompetent old fool, and I am a Weaver. Even Jonah Magnus dances to invisible strings.

Everyone underestimates a spider until it bites. Poison is poison, Jon, regardless of the medium in which it is served.

You will be safe in this new world. Martin, too. Perhaps even Jonah and his Lukas, if the Mother deems them worthy.

Now, please repeat after me...

Jon reads the ink scratched words, eyes welling up with tears and hands trembling, as thunder crashes outside and a howling gale picks up beyond the windows. Martin is shouting something, there's the crawling press of Elias' gaze as it rests heavy behind Jon, a silent observer. He can feel Elias' soothing presence, cool and calm in the raging storm.

Elias is still watching out for him.

Strings are wrapped around his wrists, jerking his arms up in a poor mockery of religious regard, strange hysterical laughter clawing out from his throat.

Jon's tears run red. Somewhere, Elias is still watching.

The door opens.

POV it's Monday afternoon and your boss's boss has called you in for a team meeting and when you show up your boss who's been on the run for suspected murder is there with two armed police officers one of whom is seconds away from killing both your boss and boss's boss and your boss's boss lets everyone know he killed two people including your previous murdered boss and the random guy who was found dead in this room last month (who your current boss was suspected of killing) and your other murdered coworker who died last month actually died last year you just never noticed because she was replaced with a changeling who then tried to kill your boss and then your boss's boss invokes the forces of an unknowable entity so now you have a new coworker, one of the police officers who is now bound here forever, so now no one's allowed to shoot your boss's boss because if anyone kills him then all of you will die as well by the same unknowable force also it is physically impossible for you to ever quit also your boss's boss has the power of knowing absolutely everything which he does, he knows absolutely everything.

He then tells you to go back to work and you do because actually this is only the 3rd or maybe the 4th-weirdest day you've had on this job and really. really you can't be bothered.

The main reason I do not want Elias to be the one who killed Gertrude is because that would mean Jon’s paranoid breakdown over “someone working in the Institute killed Gertrude” would be both correct and justified and I’m not prepared to hand Jon that win after dunking on him for so long.
