Chapter 6: A New Hero

Alya had always wanted to be a superhero for as long as she remembered in the same way every little girl wanted to be a fairy or something. She hadn’t thought it would ever actually happen. Even when Ladybug had shown up in Paris right in front of her, she hadn’t really thought she’d ever get a chance to be a hero.

When Ladybug held out the miraculous of the Fox to her for the first time, Alya’s first thought hadn’t been of her sisters. Of course, she wanted to save her sisters. She did.

But she had always wanted to be a hero.

Bounding from rooftop to rooftop with the air throwing not just her hair, but her fox ears and tail too, made her feel alive in a way she couldn’t recall feeling before. She was aware of everything around her. She could hear and smell, and she could jump. And it was strange, and it was amazing.

Then there was the fact that she was literally running between Ladybug and Chat Noir, not as a fan or a journalist, but as a member of their team.

It was like a dream.

A dream come true.

Can you talk about your DJWifi Story for the WIP ask game?

I wanted to give DJWiFi some representation by writing a story that focused on them. But I was struggling to come up with any ideas. Then I realized that canon already hinted at a pretty cute story that I haven’t really seen anyone flesh out and retelling canon is how I got started in fic writing, so I ran with it! I’m really enjoying it as it’s one of the first times that I’ve written a romance story that is primarily established relationship. The beginning is all fluff because that’s often what a new relationship feels like. And then the conflict and tension arose later. And it’s just different than anything I’ve written before.

Here’s a rough snippet from the first time there might be some trouble in paradise.

Preview:

Alya had always wanted to be a superhero. And to be chosen by Ladybug?! She was literally walking on air!

She ran home and immediately dialed her boyfriend,

“Nino! You’ll never guess what happened!”

“What happened?”

But as soon as she opened her mouth to explain, her spirits deflated. She wasn’t supposed to tell him.

“Babe? You okay?”

She had to tell him something.

“There’s a new superhero in Paris!” She exclaimed with false brightness. “A fox hero!”

That at least had the benefit of being true.

“That’s awesome! Did you get a photo?”

“No!!” She whined. “The twins were the akumas. And they smashed my phone at the beginning of the fight.”

“Are you okay?”

“Of course!”

“Are the girls okay?”

She laughed. “They think it was the coolest thing ever.”

She made herself gush about the new hero for a few minutes but her heart wasn’t in it. She hated keeping a secret from him. They had been able to tell each other everything.

Apparently, being a superhero wasn’t all power and glamor.

Alya hadn’t really ever spared a thought for Nino. Like she didn’t object to him or anything. He seemed nice and friendly. But she didn’t know him.

Not really.

She probably wouldn’t have sought him out much except he was her best friend’s crush’s best friend.

So in trying to get Marinette to talk to Adrien, she ended up talking to Nino. And he was definitely amusing, self conscious in a way that was adorable. But she wasn’t actually interested in anything more than friendship.

Chapter 1 - First Impressions

The day Nino and Alya met he hadn’t really noticed her. Sure, he knew she was there, one of the new students. But he was mad at Ms. Bustier for moving him to the front, and then Adrien had told him Chloé had been his only friend, and that was the saddest thing Nino had ever heard in his life.

And adopting Adrien as his bro turned out to be a good thing.

When Alya and Marinette kept approaching their hangouts, Marinette hardly said anything. Which wasn’t that unusual in itself. She tended to be pretty quiet in general, but it was different. She tried to talk, but it just didn’t make any sense. So Alya would often take over. She was confident and well spoken, and he couldn’t help but pay attention when she was excited about something.

But he hadn’t liked her. No, that wasn’t quite right. He had liked her just fine. But he hadn’t been crushing on her.

Current Status: this is my current fun no pressure story where I write when I am stuck everywhere else. The next chapter is a sort of transition chapter between the events of Animan and Sapotis. And the events are all blocked out - just figuring out the setting of all things because I had one thing planned, but then when I finished ch 2 I kinda wanted to change it based on what came out of that chapter. But it’s probably pretty close!

Chapter three preview:

Nino was going out of his mind.

“Dude!” Adrien exclaimed. “Just ask her where the two of you stand.”

“I can’t! She told me she was flattered, but not interested. And I told her I had a crush on Marinette!”

“But it sounds like a lot has changed since then,” Adrien pointed out.

“Yeah,” Nino agreed, his hands falling into his face. “I just… she’s become one of my best friends, and I don’t want to ruin it.”

“For what it’s worth, dude. I think she is interested. Didn’t you say you thought she was going to kiss you?”

“But then she didn’t!” Nino groaned. “Maybe I imagined the whole thing.”

“Nino, I’ve been telling you forever. You’re cool and you’re awesome. Alya would be crazy not to give you a chance. You just need to relax, be yourself, and be honest about what you’re feeling.”

Nino nodded, fully intending to follow Adrien’s advice the next time he saw Alya.
