Finally finished coloring in Masked Usagi and Luna.
I'm having so much fun with the bright Sailor Moon vibes. I want to turn it into a sticker to just for fun.
Still walking on nostalgia lane, this time with Sailor Moon, my favourite series when I was a child and gawd, how I LOVED this show!!! (ღ˘⌣˘ღ)
A Sailor Moon fanart
Here’s Masked Tuxedo relaxing in the morning after a midnight stroll. And Luna sneaks into the cafe. A rose coffee shop with a little rose garden in the back perhaps.
This was done for a con, AFA Indonesia. It’s part of a fanbook called Moonlight, and if you go there, feel free to drop by our booth at Creator’s Hub A-35. See you there!

“I wanted her to look like a clumsy 14-years-old girl who also looked like a little rabbit, and I reimagined her costume (and her accessories) to make it more modern. Hope you like her!“

Couldn’t resist slapping some colors onto my warm up sketch of the one and only Sailor Moon.
Too cute not to share!
usagi stickersss
this is so adorable it hurts.
Casual reminder that Luna and Artemis are also teenagers going along with a weird space destiny they didn’t sign up for.
That their home and everyone they loved was destroyed in front of them and the next thing they know they wake up in modern Tokyo with their memories only half there, unsure where they are, what this world is, where their old world has gone, completely lost and without anyone to help them. But these barely teenage kids still went out, alone, in the name of a half-remembered duty, and the whole time they have to put on a brave face and pretend to know what they’re doing or the whole thing will fall apart. And the more they remember, the more there is to mourn, all over again. Because this wasn’t a past life, this was THEIR life. Their only life. The Silver Millenium only fell yesterday for them. And they’re just kids.
I’m so confused! :O I always assumed they were adults because of 1) their voices 2) their attitudes, especially towards their charges and 3) that official art of them as humans:
Naoko actually perceived Luna’s human form as appearing a year younger than Usagi!
(Translated by Miss Dream but confirmed with Kurozuki)
If Luna’s human form is meant to roughly mirror her age/maturity level in cat form, then that makes her the equivalent of a 13 to 14-year-old.
As for her voice, she only sounds old in the original English dub (and maybe other international dubs). Her Japanese voice in both the original anime and Crystal is very high-pitched, implying someone younger. In fact, Keiko Han, who voiced Luna in the original anime, also voiced Luna in the live action series, where her human form looked significantly younger than the senshi:
Either way, I think the ages of the cats (or at least mental ages, since they are possibly centuries old) are ambiguous, but I am inclined to think that they are not adults and were never intended to be viewed as such (especially with the playful sibling-like relationship Minako and Artemis have), but the Dic dub hugely skewed fandom’s view of the cats as being super old grandparents instead of more like the senshi’s peers.
The DiC dub skewed a lot of things. There are a lot of North American fandom’s ideas (25 year old Mamoru [pfft and model-Mamoru], whiny Usagi, super-old Luna etc) that will NOT die and really were put there by the DiC/Cloverway dub setting permanent brain pathways or something.
It must be wild to be an international fan (or a fan who got in via other ways than the dub like @silvermoon424) and see this happening.
(I mean, even for me, who had a very very short introduction with the DiC dub and switched to sub/manga almost immediately it’s wild to see, and I was there for a least a small amount of it!).
Yeah, the DiC dub really leaned into that “old British nanny” voice for Luna. But the original voices and the new dub both avoid that entirely. Luna’s voice fits in just fine with the voices of any of the girls. But I remember watching the first episode of the new dub at Anime Expo before it was released, and the audience reeled when they heard Luna speaking in a young, normal voice.
There were gasps and people shifting and sitting up in their seats. It was clear that this idea of Luna was jarring to a lot of people.
As for how she looks, she doesn’t strike me as looking any more “grown up” then the rest of the girls (though honestly none of them look their age - sorry Naoko), and age is difficult to guess in most manga/anime styles anyway. But, while their ages aren’t clear, most evidence points towards the moon cats just being kids like their partners. Who’ll grow up to be adults and have a kid in the future, sure, but not yet.
I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that Usagi herself assumes Luna must be older than her because of her in-charge attitude, and that she chokes on her drink when she finds out Luna’s not any older than she is.
HUH! I definitely fall into the category that assumed Luna and Artemis were older! But I love this! Makes so much more internal sense for some of the decisions and emotions expressed. I also think it would help to make Usagi and Luna closer!
Saturday Afternoons
It’s looks fantastic UGJ! Super cute!
Sailor Moon Through the Eyes of a Child
I was privileged to serve as caretaker of my two nieces (aged 6 and 11) and my nephew (age 8) over the last eight days. Early on in their visit, they raided my shelf of stuffed animals. Very quickly the youngest identified my Sailor Moon plushie as her favorite! They wanted to know what she was from. And I told them that it was from one of my favorite shows - Sailor Moon! At which point both girls wanted to watch it!
We have been watching the newish ViZ dub of the 90s anime, which is featured on Hulu. And when the opening started, I wasn’t sure they were going to be particularly impressed. We had just been watching Miraculous the day before (a Sailor Moon copy cat if their ever was one!) and its production value and graphic quality is really high, especially in comparison to a 90s anime. But I was wrong. All three of them were completely taken with it! And we developed a new tradition of watching 2-3 episodes in the morning after breakfast. The youngest loved the transformation sequences, magical attacks, and theme songs the best. She loved being able to recite lines like “Mercury bubble spray” and “In the name of the moon, I will punish you!” She also loved Luna because “she was a cat and could talk” and insisted on sleeping with plushie Luna each night. The nephew was not excited about the show initially. He didn’t ever say it was a show “for girls”, but I suspect that’s what he initially thought based on previous interactions with him. But two episodes in, unprompted he said, he liked the show “because it was an action show!” And quickly identified Tuxedo Mask as his favorite character. And he kept asking who Tuxedo Mask was - and all three of them came up with various hypotheses that ranged from Motoki to Mamoru to one off episode characters. The older two especially would explain their reasoning to one another. It was greatly amusing to me that it wasn’t obvious to them, but also so much fun to see how excited they were about it throughout the day. (I also loved hearing the sound of Japanese names rolling off their tongues with no hesitation when they’ve had pretty much no exposure to the language prior as they chattered away about the show!) And the oldest was most in love with Usagi. She continually cracked up at Usagi’s antics and some pretty subtle jokes. This was a character that she related to for how annoying her little brother was, to how much she cared about her friends, and how scared she was like all of the time when in battles! (This niece is often terrified in novel situations). And listening to her talk about this character as we watched some of these episodes together, I feel like I had an epiphany all over again as to why this character is so relatable. She’s so NORMAL. She’s a girl that doesn’t like homework or school, but loves video games, ice cream, and hanging out with her friends! She happens to have superpowers, but she, at least initially, doesn’t know what to do with them. We finally figured out who Tuxedo Mask was when we got to episode 19 (we didn’t watch every episode - we skipped some to capture some of the best episodes!). And they had pretty much figured it out by this point “because their voices sounded the same”, but they were so excited to have their suspicions finally be confirmed! And at the end of episode 24, their were actually some tears when Nephrite died because “This episode was so sad!” Towards the end of the week, my husband asked them who their favorite villain was. The youngest said Zoisite because “he is pretty and he has three pretty pretty monsters”.
But it was the nephew who made my heart smile. He said he liked Nephrite “because Zoisite kept telling him he couldn’t do it, but he then would do it.” And the later he added, “Oh! And because he switched sides!”
Now in their nuclear family, kisses in shows and media are usually followed by a, “Ewww! That’s gross!” from both of their parents. And when I’ve babysat them before they usually do this too! But during episode 22, where Usagi and Tuxedo Mask share their first kiss there was none of this! They were all rooting for this couple! Instead we got “awwws” even from the boy! (And I hate that I say, even from the boy because boys have feelings and need affection too, but these children are being raised very much with somewhat well defined traditional gender roles). And their last night here, I “caught” the oldest niece and nephew making the Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask plushies make out. They were embarrassed, but I was so happy that romantic kisses had become part of their make believe play!
Our final episode before everyone had to leave was episode 28, where Usagi and Mamoru sat as models for a portrait, so we didn’t quite make it to Sailor Venus’s introduction or to Usagi’s reveal as the princess, but apparently they have Hulu at home, and are excited to continue the Sailor Moon adventure. I hope to get to have phone call conversations with them about their favorite episodes. Anyway, I was kind’ve amazed how well all three took to the show - it was the only show that all three could agree upon. I couldn’t even get them all to agree to Star Wars, which is something they all love! And I feel more convinced than ever, that Sailor Moon has something for everyone!
