Right Behind You - Ch 8: Benched
“You should have seen her, Tsurugi! She would have swept you off your feet,” Chloé exclaimed, even as she filled her plate generously with the snacks and hor d’oeuvres Adrien had ordered and had spread out across the counter besides Marinette’s batch of fancy cookies. Marinette always went all out for their birthdays.
Kagami rolled her eyes. “I don’t know why you keep trying to convince me that I like girls,” Kagami muttered.
“It’s wishful thinking,” Nino quipped, sliding between the two girls to reach the cookies. Marinette had seriously outdone herself. He was really glad it was Kagami’s birthday. The cookies themselves were molded into hollow tubes filled with cream and dusted with powdered sugar. He grinned at Chloé’s scowling face even as he bit into the cream-filled confection.
“Shut up, Lahiffe!” she barked, punching him in the shoulder.
Nino’s grin only widened. “Ooh! Did I just hit too close to home?”
“No! You’re way off!” she growled. “You’re just obnoxious!”
Nino grinned. He always enjoyed getting under Chloé’s skin. She made it too easy, especially lately.
She whirled back to Kagami. “I’m not actually trying to convince you of anything. I’m just talking about my feelings. I actually already have a date this weekend,” and her blue eyes were sparkling.
“How long have you been dying to say that?” Nino asked.
“Like the whole last hour!” she exclaimed, completely unabashed, sliding over past the food onto one of the barstools. “I’m so excited!”
Nino’s smile softened. “I hope it goes well,” he said.
Her eyes narrowed suspiciously.
“No, seriously. I do!” he said. He wasn’t going to tease her about things that were important to her.
“And who is the lucky lady?” Kagami asked.
Chloé actually blushed. “Cassandra,” she said softly, glancing down at her nails.
Wow. Chloé really liked this girl. Good for her.
Kagami frowned. “The new psychologist we hired? I’m not certain it is wise to mix business and personal relationships.”
Nino shook his head. “Isn’t that what you and Chloé do all the time?” he challenged, feeling the need to defend Chloé if she felt something real.
Kagami turned to him. “Chloé and I are friends. It’s not the same thing as romance.”
Nino shrugged. “Maybe. Maybe not. But look at her, Gami!” he said, gesturing to Chloé’s blushing face. “She’s so smitten. You have to let her try!”
Chloé eyed him suspiciously. “Why are you being so nice to me? Do you want something?”
Nino laughed. “Nope! Just saw a glimpse of a human heart for a second and wanted to encourage it,” he teased. It had been more than a year since Chloé had been more than superficially interested in someone.
He was rewarded with a scowl.
“Next time, I guess I won’t bother,” he added, knowing that he definitely would always bother. He had a weird friendship with Chloé, but he cared about her even if they had nothing in common other than Adrien.
