Top 5 Southern Style Shows to Watch

With summer winding down, you may want to reminisce in the last few weeks of the sun, sand, surf, and/or whatever else the season has to offer. With the hit Netflix series Outer Bankshaving been renewed for a season 2, it’s obvious that people love to be transported to places where it seems like summer never ends. But, I’m not talking about California or Florida. No, I’m talking about the…

A Season 7 Review of Adam Ruzek

I’m still here.”
–Adam to Kim in 7×15 “Burden of Truth”
Adam Ruzek. He’s many things: a goofball at times, a hardworker, a loveable guy, and the list goes on. This season has really put all of those sides on display, so because of that, I thought I’d take a look back at Adam’s seventh season, talk about what was important, why it was important, and what it could all mean for him here on out.…

A Season 7 Review of Kim Burgess

I wasn’t supposed to be on the scene, I wasn’t supposed to be at the motel, I wasn’t supposed to lose the baby. Don’t you get that? I don’t want pity, and I don’t want support. I want you to be angry with me, as angry with me as I am.”
–Kim Burgess to Adam Ruzek in 7×15 “Burden of Truth”
If anyone has had the most traumatic season on Chicago PD, one could argue that it has been Kim Burgess.…

I know exactly what time it is. You think I’m going anywhere? Cause I’m not. I’m right here…I’m right here.”
–Kevin Atwater, 7×20 “Silence of the Night”
He’s been on the show since day 1, but Kevin Atwater has really come into his own over these last few seasons, especially in the season 7 finale. In light of that, I thought I’d take a look back at Kevin’s seventh season, and talk about what…

A Season 7 Review of Vanessa Rojas

I don’t do rain checks, sweetie. Especially on a sunny day.”
–Vanessa Rojas (as Nina Rodriguez) to Kevin Atwater in 7×02 “Assets”
While she may be the newest member of the Intelligence Unit, Vanessa Rojas has certainly made a splash on Chicago PD this season. In light of that, I thought I’d take a look back at Vanessa’s seventh season, and talk about what was important, why it was important,…

A Season 7 Review of Hailey Upton

You live by your lights, your instincts, because that’s how you survive.”
– Hailey Upton to Vanessa Rojas in 7×03, “Familia”
If anyone has gone from one end of the spectrum to the other this season, it’s been Hailey Upton. This darker turn on her journey has been intriguing to say the least, and it’s been cool to see Tracy Spiridakos play up these new sides of Hailey. I thought I’d take a look…

The Rookie 2x19 rant

Me, while watching it overall: 😳🥺😚 But in all seriousness, it was INSANE. In like, the best way possible. Holy sh!t 🤯

My fave part of course was all the Chenford content.
Because hello Lucy we see u girl...you’re waking up w/Emmett (your boyfriend? Is that what he is now?) AND YET THE FIRST THING YOU THINK ABOUY IS HOW YOU CAN’T BE LATE FOR WORK OR ELSE TIM IS GONNA MAKE YOU DO PUSH-UPS I CAN’T
“Nah, Bradford’s chill.” - Emmett says. “Not if he’s your TO.” - Lucy replies. Like yes honey u tell him
And then later omg my Chenford heart.
Tim really went 🥺 while talking about protecting rookies — & then LOOKED AT LUCY. He cannot even imagine another thing like DOD happening to her ugh I love a protective husband...I mean, training officer.
And then Lucy got MAD AT EMMETT for telling Tim how to talk to her. Oooooo girl is sticking by her man (oops sorry, I mean tRaInInG oFfIcEr 😆)
I did not need saving. —Lucy (😒) to Emmett after Tim reprimanded her about the tape & gun hand. Yep yep.
And then Tim, oh my goodness. Did anyone find it kinda 🥵 that he went all possessive-protective on her. Like he legit said:
She’s MY boot. I’ll talk to her however the hell I want. 😯 ok Tim we see u sir
And then don’t even get me started on their shop convos. The growth in those two scenes alone is fantastic. 😅🚔👏
Tim: why r u so happy ?!?!
Lucy, essentially: shut up 🙄
I mean I know there was a whole conversation where he was like “you’ve been doing that a lot lately” (smiling); & Lucy’s smart response of “my personal life’s none of your business” was great and even better was Tim’s little proud smirk & “there may just be hope for you yet” like OKAY 😆
And then later while they’re back in the shop they’re talking & Lucy’s like “I thought we weren’t gonna discuss my personal life”
Tim, essentially: u thought wrong 😂 *cause he just can’t help himself*
& Lucy simultaneously making Chenford fans go 🥺 & 🥰:

Because it’s PROGRESS but not the exact kind we wanted, you know?! 😬

  • PS: we stan a protective Tim Bradford okay. He was just trying to do his best by Lucy Chen because as he said: he won’t be there anymore once those 30 days are up (which....idk makes me nervous but I highly doubt he’s moving to NYC w/Rachel because the man can’t even leave for MALIBU CALIFORNIA for a sergeant job becausecthat would mean leaving Lucy so no he’s staying period end of story)

Rant over. Thanks for coming to my Chenford feels Ted talk. I’ll be back next week. 😂🤷‍♀️

There was a time I couldn’t imagine a future without you, but I can now. [And] I feel…free.”
– Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss), 5×09 “I Can’t Imagine The Future”

Chicago Med had to end their fifth season early due to the pandemic, so their 20th episode served as their makeshift season finale. Since we’re unsure of when they will exactly be back filming, I figured it’d be a great time to take a look at a “wish list” of sorts for their up-and-coming sixth season. From happy couples to hospital policies, there’s a lot that can be done during season 6 of Chicago Med. Keep reading below for some ideas.

Learn more about Crockett’s past

Perhaps it was just bad timing for Crockett Marcel’s (Dominic Rains) past to come to light during their season finale, but regardless, it would be cool to get to know more about Med’s newest doctor.

How did his lost child come to be? As in, was he previously married? Engaged? In a relationship? And how was he as a father? We saw a little bit of how his loss affected his current work – in episode 12, and in episode 20. But, it would be – I hesitate to say nice, because who wants to see a character in pain? – interesting to see if we could learn more on how he was affected by it. Did it change how he operated as a doctor? Was it the reason for his move from New Orleans to Chicago?

We’ve only really seen the overconfident, cocky Dr. Marcel – I think it’s time we could stand to see another side of him. Not that he has to break down completely, but to show a little more vulnerability would be refreshing, I think.

Can Manstead make it work?

…At least as friends, that is. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto) said she would want to try and be friends with Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) again, so why can’t they make it work? I think they could, and should give it a shot at least.

Now, before anyone freaks out, that’s not to say I don’t “ship” Manstead. I’ve been rooting for them since day 1. But, that being said –– Will and Natalie have both seemed to have moved on. Will’s been dating Hannah Asher (Jessy Schram); and Chicago Med has hinted at a potential connection between Natalie and Crockett. Yep, as in Crockett Marcel!

Will and Hannah started off as a bit of a wildcard romance at first, and while I’m not quite sure if we can fully trust Hannah, Will seems to, which is really all that matters. Meanwhile, Natalie and Crockett have been working closely, and way more often, together. So, will there be more in store for those two? It’s hard to tell for sure, since Med was cut short by 3 episodes.

With where they left off, it appears as though Crockett may open up more to Natalie about his past. That could be a good thing, as it would further my first point.

But, back to Manstead.

While we saw Natalie and Will argue quite a bit during season 5, it would be nice to see them interact in some way again next season. Even if it starts as a simple “Hello.” Maybe kind of getting back to their season 1 vibe? Just a thought.

Explore Chexton as individuals

While I did like Chexton together, now that they…aren’t, I think it would be a prime time to give some screentime to April and Ethan as individuals. Who are they without the other? We know their backgrounds, but we haven’t seen them interact with many others besides each other over the last season. (Well, okay. Unless you count Crockett. But let’s not get into that right now).

It would be interesting to see April have to find a place to live. Or, maybe she could live with her brother, Noah? I missed seeing the Sexton siblings on my TV towards the back half of the season! It would also be intriguing to see how Ethan fares on his own. Like, does he miss April? Or, does he thrive? Does he – dare I say – find someone else? Or, is his heart still attached to April, despite her indiscretion?

And what about April? Can she work alongside her ex-fiancé and her former crush? Well, I’m assuming it’s in the past, as we haven’t seen anything more personal between Crockett and April; only professional, which is good given the situation, I think.

See Maggie, Ben, and Auggie as a family

PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD GIVE BEN, MAGGIE, AND AUGGIE A HAPPY GO LUCKY STORYLINE. PLEASE. THEY DESERVE IT!

In all seriousness, Maggie and Ben have been through hell and back. The both of them fought cancer, and beat it to remission! Then, they got engaged and married! Now, they’re going to tackle raising a young kid together. The best foster parents ever? Check. Adorable kid? Check. Family unit in the making? Check.

They deserve to have that idyllic family life: cooking pancakes in the kitchen on the weekends; Ben taking Auggie with him to school while Maggie jets off to work; Maggie coming home and reading Auggie a bedtime story, etc. Would that not be the cutest thing ever?! And who deserves it more than Ben and Maggie?! My heart is bursting at the thought.

Have more scenes featuring Owen, Elsa, etc.

I’m well aware adorable Owen Manning is very different from super-intelligent medical student Elsa Curry. But, in general, what I’m saying is it would be lovely if we could utilize these sort of, “background” characters more. Give Elsa a storyline beyond desiring Will’s affection (thank god I think Med has moved past it for now). Give Natalie some more scenes with her own child, Owen. Please? Please, @ Chicago Med, I’m begging you. Can we also get Nurse Doris, Trini, or Monique into more scenes? They offered great lines of dialogue and an extra layer that makes Chicago Med more realistic (though it’s already very realistic)!

More storylines for Sharon Goodwin and Daniel Charles

CHICAGO MED — “The Ghosts Of The Past” Episode 517 — Pictured: Oliver Platt as Daniel Charles — (Photo by: Elizabeth Sisson/NBC)

The veterans of Gaffney Medical Center have gotten quite a few spotlit stories on their personal lives, so let’s keep that going into season 6! We left off with Sharon’s son doing business with a medical supply company, and he seemed to have bonded with Dr. Lanik fairly well. But, Sharon was seen looking a little uneasy. Why? Could it be the methods with which Michael secured this information? If so, could we see them have a discussion about it?

For Dr. Charles, it was great to see him step into that paternal role more. Can we keep that going with his daughter, Anna next season too? Yes, we saw him suffer a devastating loss of his wife, Caroline “CeCe” Charles, and we saw Robin make an appearance during that time. But, after that, his ex-wife and Anna made an appearance. Anna came back recently too, and it was great to see Daniel admit his slight failings as a parent with her…and to see him try and make it right. It gave the always so smart psychiatrist Dr. Charles a more humanistic quality. It kind of made him more relatable, more everyday.

It would be nice to see the more real sides of both of Med’s fearless leaders.

There you have it, 6 wishes for Chicago Med’s sixth season. Do you have something you wanna see happen? If so, comment below, or reach out on social media!

Chicago PD recap

Here are my thoughts on the Chicago PD midseason finale “Absolution” :

Upstead
Chicago PD surprisingly kicked off their episode with some subtle Upstead flirting. Hailey has followed Jay to see where he had been sneaking off to (turns out it was to help out Marcus West’s family).
She warned him about his mission, but he reassured her that he’d be okay. Yeah, if only he knew what was to come.
Because not soon after, Jay had to bail on a crime scene to go see Angela (Marcus’ wife) again. Hailey, being the nice partner that she is, covered for him, so he could leave. When Voight asked her what was up, she told him Halstead was simply working some things out.
Later in the day when Jay doesn’t show up for court, Platt comes up to the district to ask where he is. Voight immediately checks with Hailey first, as being the one Jay is closest to, she may know his whereabouts. She had no idea where he was, as she had just gotten done leaving not one or two, but three voicemails on his phone.
I personally enjoyed her line of at two “I’m annoyed”; but 3 “I’m worried.” She’s such a work wife I love that for her.
But anyhow. So they find Halstead’s car, and after Upton tells Rojas to check it (because obviously she knows Jay’s truck hehehe), they find he went under without telling anyone. They go inside the house to find lots of blood, but no Jay. And no Angela. Yikesarama, as Jesse Lee Soffer would say...
Well, Hailey knows she needs to come clean, so she tells Voight about who Angela really is. Armed with this new info, they go to work to track down people involved with Angel, & that are connected to the drug dealer who was tortured in their earlier call (the one Jay left from in a hurry).
They start putting pieces together, which unsurprisingly lead to Darius Walker. Voight makes a deal and Darius agrees to infiltrate Kevin with Pedro, the guy they know helped run the drugs. Pedro lets Kevin (undercover name, Keyshawn) talk to Jay (known as “Jimmy” to Angela) so we know he’s okay for now.
All the while, wherever the heck Jay and Angela are, he’s trying to keep her spirits up. Things get pretty painful fast though, not only physically (Angela’s stabbed in the abdomen; Jay is bleeding profusely from his head & his face has been beaten), but emotionally too in terms of conversation.
Jay finally came clean and told Angela how he really met Marcus. In prison. Because he’s the cop who arrested him. Cue the dramatic music...
An important scene
Despite this slightly good prospect, the team still has to do the exchange of Angela and Jimmy (Jay) for the drugs. Kevin meets with Pedro, who — big shock (note the sarcasm please) — doesn’t have Angela or Jay to trade off.
A shootout ensues, which led Voight to taking down one guy with a shot to the leg (which I always find entertaining when he shoots someone up. He just never ever hesitates. He gives zero fucks).
Hailey Upton tackles him down, demanding to know where her partner is. “You better hope to God he’s alright,” she scowls at the suspect. Yeah, remind me never to mess with Hailey Ann Upton. She is a freaking badass. Love it!
They play another move in their little chess game by bringing Pedro’s son in. But a significant scene happens right before then that really solidified what Rick Eid said about Hailey’s feelings surrounding Jay’s kidnapping.
Hailey is seen on the phone, wondering where the heck the boy is. You can hear her voice breaking on the end of the call with the lockup people; and you can feel her desperation when she chucks her coffee mug in the sink in frustration.
Adam heats the commotion and comes to lend a shoulder — cough cough, how it should have been in 602, but I digress - and reminds Hailey that they are gonna find Jay.
“Gotta do something,” she says sadly. You see her wipe some tears away and run a hand over her eyes, signaling just how much this is weighing on her.
When the boy shows up; they use him as leverage against the dad and they get what they need. An address. Jay, they’re coming for ya buddy!
The shocking end
What truly made Chicago PD stand out amongst the rest of the finales was their twist ending.
Jay had managed to wrangle himself free of his piped restraints & gave Angela a weapon to protect herself while he took down the offender upstairs.
Remember when Jay confessed his real identity? Fans waited on pins & needles, but thankfully Angela did not sell him out. But hold on, we’re not done yet.
Outside, Intwlligence is trying to find a way inside the stash house. The only one who can get in? A teeny tiny Tracy Spiridakos (no seriously, she squeezed through a hole in the window like, yay big...dang). So up goes Hailey — alone, mind you. She’s offline, she’s gone dark. I’m over here worried something’s gonna happen to her. (But it doesn’t).
The good news? SHE FINDS JAY! Hailey runs to her partner, her voice pleading with him to be okay as she asks. Her eyes don’t really wanna know the answer though as she looks him over. Jay looks at her, and you see a literal sigh of relief on his face that she’s here. Because she means safety. She means he’s getting out of there alive.
“Hey.”
“Hey, are you okay?”
He nods, but remembers Angela. He tells her to stay here (such a good work husband he is!), but that he has to go get Angela from downstairs. Hailey remains upstairs while the camera follows Jay down.
What ensues is something I didn’t see coming. Like seriously not in a million years.
Angela, armed with a gun somehow now, shoots Jay. It’s unclear if it’s in the shoulder or more on his chest, but either way, he goes down for the count.
And that — yes THAT — is how the episode ends. A “to be continued” flashes across a black screen & I am a bucket of emotions. Don’t even get me started on that promo.

And that concludes my semi professional recap of Chicago PD. Now allow me to express my fangirl emotions below:

OH MY FUCKING GOD I CANT BELIEVE ANGELA SHOT JAY AND THAT HE WAS RIPPED AWAY FROM HAILEY YET AGAIN AND SHE DOESNT EVEN KNOW HES BEEN SHOT YET MY UPSTEAD HEART CANT TAKE THIS!!!!

Seriously though, can someone give Jesse Lee Soffer an Emmy? Also nominate Tracy Spiridakos for one too please. Thank you. They deserve it.

I just — Hailey’s look she gave Jay before he left. It was the purest most genuine form of love there is. Like it’s not really so much about what kind of love it is; but more so that it happened at all. In all my years of watching this show, I can’t remember a time when Erin gave him that kind of look. Sure, she was relieved when he was alive in 301; but this, this was different.

Hailey was pouring all her emotions into that look. Just like she always has with Jay. And he was doing the same with her. Because that’s what works between them. And this episode showed everyone (like legit, everyone in Intelligence) how much Hailey cares for Jay. Not just in a partner way. But a “I’m gonna do whatever it takes to get him back because I need him in my life as more than that” way. Because it’s true. She needs him. She loves him. And he needs and loves her too. So that’s why Jay has to be okay — because he needs to get back to Hailey so all can be right in the world again. That’s all I can say.
