Almost
So close. We ran instead of walking so I didn’t wanna stop it.
She felt like she was flying. Her feet moved so fast she thought for sure she was no longer touching the ground. She hoped she was almost at her car, but it was hard to tell from the tears that blurred her vision.
He kept after her, his pace matching with hers. He didn’t wanna lose her again. He couldn’t afford to make the same mistake twice.
I was so low, right before I met you. Didn’t think that I could get you.
She knew that she wasn’t good enough for him. If she was, he would have chosen her the first time. Course, if she was smarter, she wouldn’t have let him get away the first time either.
I know we burned so bright. Sometimes the stars just don’t align.
There were so many moments -- tiny and magical just like the stars she drew and dreamt about. But she wanted him to be more than that. More than a moment. At least, that was what she hoped for. Hope is for suckers though.
He knew there was still something between them. There were too many little things that happened to call it coincidence. He knew better than that -- he just wished he knew it sooner.
We almost made it, five feet from the finish line. It was overrated, we ran right out of time.
That fire that lit up her eyes was almost as bright as the one in Texas. He’d lost himself in both of them at one point, and that made for a dangerous night. He knew it was risky to try to kiss her then, but he couldn’t help it. He was drawn to her, connected to her in ways that he couldn’t even explain.
She knew his voice. His accent and gentle manner was hard to miss...or to forget. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t leave the thoughts of Texas behind. Even though Josh had convinced her that she didn’t like a “nice guy” like Lucas, she couldn’t help but wonder if she wasn’t supposed to like him, then why did she run from him like she was scared of what would happen if she didn’t?
Knocked it out of the park, the other half of my heart. I loved you more, I loved you most. Almost.
She could barely make out her grey Subaru but she still fumbled with her keys to unlock it. Just as she was about to press the button, she dropped them as a hand touched her shoulder, apparently with enough force to turn her around.
“Wait for what, Lucas? There’s nothing left for you to say.”
He didn’t answer her with words, but instead with a kiss. And she couldn’t help but forget her fears and self-doubts. Her kissing him back solidified that almost was never enough for them.
