“You are a good cop with a good heart.”
“You’re a good cop.”
“You’re wired through the heart.”
“Your job is to be you.”
Can we please just take a moment to let all those words Voight has told Jay & Hailey throughout this season to sink in?
With the intense end scene in this week’s episode where Voight questioned whether or not Hailey could continue to be herself on this job...it got me thinking of all the ways she & Jay have been, both individually & w/each other — as the quotes above demonstrate their similarities in personality & work ethics.
Lemme reiterate: Jay & Hailey are similar to each other. Not to Voight — though they both have now been succumbed to him needing to remind them of how not to act like him 😬
It’s an odd kind of phenomenon that PD’s been playing with I think... like first Adam in s6 w/taking the fall for Antonio; and hell, even before that Hank has to lose Al in s5 due to him taking the blame & going to jail {RIP}.
Maybe that’s why Voight’s been so keen on reminding both Hailey & Jay this season of who they are at their cores... because he doesn’t want to lose two of his best detectives & people in the unit.
But with the darker turn Hailey’s been taking since 7x12 (which 7x07 brought on), it’ll be interesting to see if NYC works out how Hank wants it to (to remind Hailey of where the lines in policework are drawn). He did have a point when he said:
“You cross too many lines you forget where they are.”
(Or something to that affect anyways).
While I’m intrigued by how they’re taking Upton’s story darker, and I know Tracy’s gonna kill it; I do worry for Hailey. Especially cause we saw the consequences of Jay’s rash actions (um, yeah hi he was shot AGAIN) — so let’s just hope that Halstead can be that anchor for Upton to remind her of how she is & how she’s helped him; maybe it’s his turn to help her.
We already saw him be there as a sounding board for her in 7x16, so that was a great start for them to delve deeper into Hailey’s past (as heartbreaking as it was 🙁).
That’s because they are good people and good cops. They’re both strong, sensitive, morally sound people. Even if they veer off, they find a way back. They always have. And they have each other to help guide them. Which is part of the reason they work so well together. 💙
Sadly we’ll probably have to wait till s8 to see how that could all unfold, but I’m confident that regardless of how much angst they have or how far they pull away from each other, Jay & Hailey always find their way back together.
It’s their thing that works, you know?
“Your job is to be you. Hailey, I’m starting to wonder if you can do it.” 🥺
Random Hailey Upton moments from s7 that break my heart a little 🥺😕
