Continuing on with 4x21: Upstead’s first surveillance van scene ⤵️
First up? Please note that Hailey Upton thinks Jay Halstead is funny. Cause he made a joke and she was like “a sense of humor...don’t get that much in my old unit.” Also, I love how she refers to robbery-homicide as her old unit, like damn she knew she wanted to be intelligence YES QUEEN. ⬆️
Then, notice her little smirk at Jay’s “meritoriously promoted” comment. She smirked (borderlined on a small smile honestly) whilst looking down, then looked back up with a little bit of a fiery expression, like she knew what the perfect response back would be. ⬆️
And even better? Jay kept up with Hailey’s sass. “Would you care to elaborate on this UC case for us?” Hailey responded with: “I would love to,” sarcastically of course. I just love witty bby Upstead banter okay. It’s fine I’m fine. ⬆️
Last but not least is the fact that after said witty banter, Jay and Hailey are looking at each other. Poor Al being the almost nonexistent third wheel LOL. ⬆️
And can’t forget Hailey’s first time in the back of Jay’s van. Hey, she said it, not me! 😉😏⬆️

Thanks to a new Twitter account (@upsteadmoments) I’m gonna have a mini breakdown & overanalyze all these scenes again. Sorry (but also not sorry).
First up? Hailey’s debut - 4x21 “Fagin”
So, first of all, can y’all see Erin, Voight, and Jay’s expressions when she walked in & started taking control of the scene? Erin looked confused, Voight looked surprised, and Jay kind of looked dumbfounded. Like he didn’t really know what to believe, but note that his expression wasn’t as off putting as Lindsay’s & Voight’s. ⤵️
Also pretty telling were Erin and Hank’s direct expressions at Hailey while she was talking. Erin’s eyes are narrowed, like she still can’t believe what this girl’s saying (& she looked to Hank right after). Then Voight looked like he was one second away from telling Upton to step off his crime scene. Yikesarama. But, nevertheless, Hailey remained cool, calm, and collected. You can see it on her face ⤵️
Then there’s Halstead. Jay’s expression shifted in his eyes when he looked at Voight versus when he looked back at Hailey. When he looked at Hank, you could see he was a little jarred by his sergeant’s tone. Then he looked back at Upton slightly softer, almost imperceptible in a “blink and you’ll miss it” sort of way. Anyhow, he looked at her differently - almost like he was curious as to how she would respond back to Hank. ⤵️
Also, we love a polite future husband nicely moving/making room for his future wife to walk through the bank. ⤵️
Aaaaand of course I can’t forget the smirk. The first of many smirks Jay Halstead would give Hailey Upton. He was so impressed by how she stood her ground. She was a total badass!! ⤵️

I feel like it was always supposed to be Jay & Hailey as partners, because even in 4x21 (Upton’s debut), she was first paired with Jay (and Al) to do surveillance. She even commented on Jay’s sense of humor, which was cute.
Don’t get me wrong, I liked having Upton & Lindsay as partners, just for the sake of the switch-up (see below for the funny reactions), but I feel like even poor Hailey got roped into Erin’s antics when she went off on the man that kidnapped that kid. Not that the prick didn’t deserve it, but I mean, if you think about it, it would’ve been Jay’s ass on the line with Erin if Voight hadn’t of switched the partners.
But, since he did switch them up, we got to see different dynamics. What I did like about 4x22 was that even though Erin & Hailey were partnered up technically, that didn’t stop bby Upstead from tackling the case together. It was cool to see them share the spotlight in the one bullpen whiteboard scene.
Then 4x23 of course showed Hailey being invited out with the boys for drinks at Molly’s. Erin didn’t show up, but Hailey made an impact. She even felt kinda bad that Jay left after what she said about Erin possibly “drowning her sorrows.” It just showed how much she already cared about him as a person, even before they were partners.
Their connection and ability to play off each other from the get go is why I think they were meant to be (partners, friends, more than that, etc).
PS: Jay looking at his future partner, friend, confidant, work wifey, should be girlfriend-fiancé-actual wife is GOLD. Miss Hailey Anne Upton does not play, and she definitely made an impact. 👱🏼♀️
