*after they go for their pizza date and then go to Molly’s and have one too many drinks for Hailey’s welcome back party that Jay planned*
Drunk on Love: an Upstead one-shot
“I am...” Hailey began, a little too drunk to put her words together properly. “Tried.”
Jay laughed as he set his stuff down. He’d driven her back to her apartment, letting them in with the spare key she gave him.
“I think you mean tired, Hailey.”
She scoffed and plopped down on her couch. Jay carefully glanced over at her, as she splayed out on her sofa. Her hair was a mess and she was already closing her eyes, like they were too heavy to keep open.
“Hailey,” He said softly, placing his hand on her shoulder. “You should probably go to bed.”
“I should do a lot of things, Halstead. Quit being a downer and sit down with me.”
Jay shrugged, figuring he’d just keep watch over her in case she needed to run to the bathroom to throw up or whatever else.
What he didn’t expect was for Hailey to curl up next to him. “You make a nice pillow,” she mumbled drunkenly.
Jay scrunched down into the couch a little bit more so she wasn’t falling towards his lap, but rather off his chest on his shoulder.
He finally knew he could grab some shut eye when a few minutes later, he heard soft snores coming from her lips.
The morning came quicker than either of them wanted. Hailey woke up because she felt herself press against something hard, when she knew her pillow was soft.
Her eyes sprung wide open when she realized she’d fallen asleep on Jay. Shit. Shit shit shit.
Okay, take a breath, Hailey, she thought to herself. She remembered the surprise party, how touched she was that everyone — even Platt and Voight — came out to welcome her back. She vaguely remembers Jay helping her into his truck, but then after that, nothing much.
Except for now, when she evidently fell asleep with him. She went to move off his shoulder, only to find that his left arm had draped over his chest, making his hand come to rest on her left arm, which was squished next to his right shoulder.
So, she did something that she thought in a million years she’d never do.
She leaned right back on his shoulder, tucking herself into him. Why? Because she was comfortable. And because you love him, she reminded herself. Yeah, that she did.
When Jay woke up a little bit later to see Hailey still tucked into him, he smiled. He went to shift a little when he noticed she’d laid her hand on top of his. So she had moved, just not away, he thought to himself.
Maybe he was right when he thought he could read her face all those weeks ago in the hospital after all.
