Stranger

She wouldn’t call herself Karen’s coworker, they worked in the same building and occasionally rode the elevator at the same time, but she was pretty sure if they were in the same store, Karen wouldn’t recognize them. That was the thing about working at a large office, the big wigs all had names but the peons didn’t.....

Acquaintance

At the Chinese restaurant where most of them had first met, the group of heroes and anti-heroes gathered so they could be themselves completely. Jessica didn’t have a problem with shit like that, but the rest of these weirdos who had alter-egos and epitaphs needed a place where they didn’t need any masks.

Former Friend

Matt was talking to Colleen when they walked in. There were rare occasions when he wished to be normal; normal eyes, normal ears. If he’d been a little less aware he’d have been able to ignore the fact Karen and Frank had come in together....

Best Friend

Foggy saw Karen and Frank sitting at a table in the corner, his legs were spread out, allowing Karen to sit between them. He was leaning forward in his chair, completely focused on whatever Karen was talking about...

“What was she like?” Karen’s question is soft as it breaks the comfortable quiet. Frank winces before realizing the reaction is just instinct - he's unbothered by the question. Not when it comes from her.

He turns the wince into a smile that stretches across his face as he remembers. “She was a ballbuster, that’s for sure. Didn’t take any shit from me. Made me understand what a real man needed to be, y’know?” He glances up at Karen where she sits, patient and interested. 

“The married guys in my unit would bitch and moan about taking care of their kids when they were on leave, or doing dishes or some shit. And y’know, sometimes that stuff settles into you, right? So I came home once, before Kandahar, and I started complaining about having to do laundry or something, and she let me have it.” Frank shakes his head, grin wide. “God damn my life flashed before my eyes she took me down so hard. She was just merciless,” he laughs.

Karen smiles. “Sounds like she could keep up with you.”

“Yeah. More than.” It’s quiet for a minute as they both sit with their own thoughts. Frank’s the first to break it.
