THE ITALIAN WORD “COLONEL” WAS DERIVED FROM TWO SOURCES: ITALIAN AND FRENCH. WHEN IT WAS IMPORTED INTO ENGLISH IN THE 16TH CENTURY, THE FRENCH VERSION WAS SPELLED CORONEL AND THE ITALIAN VERSION WAS SPELLED COLONNELA.
