Confession: I’m not really a Thirteen/Yaz shipper and I’m not really against it. I can enjoy reading a good fic about them though and appreciate it but for me, I’ve always felt it was more on Yaz’s side. Yaz definitely admires Thirteen a lot but it wasn’t until Praxeus, until the moment in Hong Kong when Yaz requested to stay behind that I saw something from Thirteen’s side. 

A lot of fans were excited about Yaz (and Ryan in Resolution) going ride or die for the Doctor, and read a lot into Thirteen’s expression but for me Thirteen flat out did not look happy. 

This is Worry with a capital W. 

Thirteen’s expression in both Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos and Resolution has a different flavor than Thirteen’s expression in Praxeus. 

The difference between the moment in TBRAK, Resolution and Thirteen’s expression below… that made me go: “Oh, hey.”

Something’s happened in the last few episode and the distance that Thirteen’s given them, emotional as well as physical is shaking loose and we get this expression. 

There’s something really about the way Thirteen looked at Yaz at this moment, something that triggers the repressed, but passionate Regency romantic hero junkie in me and copy and pasting that role on Thirteen at this moment. 

TBH, it reminds me of the moment with Twelve and Clara in The Mummy on the Orient Express or at least the worried looks Twelve keeps giving Clara during series 9.

Twelve feared losing Clara, he almost did in Kill the Moon and The Mummy on the Orient Express was supposed to be their last adventure together. Hence, the really tension filled, intense moment between Clara and Twelve. 

Clara wanted to be reassured that the Doctor would still visit her even if they stopped traveling and we all know, that’s seldom the case for the Doctor but he’s trying to reassure her. 

There’s so many unsaid things between them at this moment, fortunately, something happens that changes Clara’s mind and they continue traveling. 

In series 9 Clara starts to take bigger and bigger risks and Twelve is even more painfully aware that Clara is mortal and he is not. 

Twelve and Clara was never confirmed on screen as romantic but their bond was intense, and Moffat did the clever thing Doctor Who writers do, write enough for shippers to get something and write enough spots where non-shippers can also read the relationship as platonic. 

I mention this because at this moment there’s nothing here but subtext and can be read in any number of things but I will say this is the first moment that from Thirteen’s side, I sat up, tilted my head and went: “Huh.” 

And then that last lingering worried look Thirteen gave Yaz – she was afraid for Yaz’s safety and reluctant to leave because she’s been wrong about the building before.

At the same measure, Thirteen, like Twelve, is giving Yaz the space to follow her own hunch and fly on her own. 

It’s an interesting character beat and moment. 

Ugh, the look on Twelve's face here, at first he's got that slight, faraway smile, like "wouldn't it be nice if she were saying that to me," and then he snaps out of it and he's like "get a hold of yourself, you old fool."

(But she was talking to him [sobs].)

“And you’ve seen me do that more often than most. Isn’t that right, Clara?”
