One thing I love so much about the merman scene - apart from using real water and not CGI - is that they used a "real"/practical tail and no CGI either.

Because thats my biggest pet peeve with The Little Mermaid 2023, the tails looks horrible, especially of the sisters, but also Ariel looks... meh

Not even the bra is real. You know how amazing the bras could have looked with some good body paint? Like Mystique... *cough* back to the actual topic

Mermaid tails look unreal anyway... because mermaids do not exist. So the biggest challenge is to create a tail that looks a) convincing and b) pretty.

The point is: Animate a dragon, no matter how shitty it looks, its convincing, because a dragon is supposed to look unreal. It doesn't exist. We do not know how a dragon looks. But mermaids...? they have basically fish tails, and we know how fishs look. An this picture above looks nothing like a fish. It just looks unreal. And that ruins the illusion

This is why it is so much better to use a tail costume, inspired by an actual fish. To keep the illsuion real

Because it is a real tail in real water. And thats honestly the dedication i expect when you write a mermaid story... and not just horrible CGI

But it’s so unforgivable for the Little Mermaid movie because the mermaid tail market is so incredibly talented and capable, and has been for decades. The H2O Just Add Water tails? All real, with hand-laid scales and silicone casing. What I’d call basically the perfect tails. With some touching up around the waist? Flawless. But Mertailor (fuck that guy but still, the product), MerBellas, Findolk productions? So many options for gorgeous, high quality silicone tails! Unique and colorful and amazingly realistic. And I can’t even discuss the bras. Those are ATROCIOUS, when making a practical bra would be so easy and beautiful.

I highly agree. Why they didn't made one bra that the actress could put on and off easily and that still looked detail and glittery (see Stedes tail) is beyond me. Honestly. That would have saved so much costs compared to CGI. Oh i forgot, you have to pay someone to do it. Silly me

There are so many amazing onces out there. And this one here is not made with a huge ass Disney budget. And even them already look amazing in water:

Compared to that, the Disney CGI one just looks cheap. And those are made for swimming. So...

And also, @ people who are upset because “Ariel is supposed to be Danish”, uuuuh… look, Elsa and Anna look *actually* typically Scandinavian. The original Disney Ariel… is a mermaid with very unnaturally looking red hair. She doesn’t look Scandinavian, she looks like a fantasy being. Which is what she is supposed to be. So if *that’s* your problem, think again.

i’ve seen people say that ariel can’t be played by halle cuz it’s a danish tale and we should get mad at a white woman playing mulan, pocahontas, or tiana.

mulan literally had to go save china; her story is about her being chinese

pocahontas had her land invaded by colonizers and they literally call her and her tribe s*vages; her story is about her being native american

tiana is a black woman living in the 20s in the south surrounded by black culture (the food, the music, etc); her story is about her being black.

ariel’s story isn’t about her being danish. they don’t talk about her being danish, there’s no danish culture integrated into the plot, nothing; it’s just a danish tale.

y’all just don’t want a black woman with locs playing ariel. like stop being pussies and say that with your chest.
