Robin Hood and Little John walkin' through the forest--

alright! so! early robin hood ballads and narratives don't have an origin story for little john, but a later ballad (robin hood and little john) does. they fight on a bridge in it, but I like looking at illustrations, so I've swapped out the bridge for that tree peaking out of the panel in the first panel bc I enjoy louis rhead's illustrations a lot.

this is some kind of introduction scene after they fight and climb out of the river!

Robin Hood & Little John (edited by Stephen Knight & Thomas Ohlgren)

One of my biggest issues with Robin Hood 2018 is that "John" is not called "Little John"

The finale scene of Brother Tuck translating his name is such a nice touch. And it would have been the perfect opportunity to say: "Would you mind if I translate this? And call you LITTLE John." I would have scream... but no

Cate Blanchett and Russell Crowe in Robin Hood

A simple gesture

There’s something I find truly beautiful in this version of the tale and it’s the fact that Robin is good to Marion. Truly good, kind and polite. Before the bath scene you can hear a bit of embarassment in his voice as he asks her to help him take off his chainmail. Alternatively, he could probably have fetched one of the servants to help him undress but instead he just stands there helpless, with heart on his sleeve and nothing but kind words at his aid. Not to mention, he does that in most kind, polite voice one could muster. He’s truly patient with her, doesn’t mind sleeping with hounds on the floor of her chamber or by the fire in the dining room so as not to wake her after having planted the seeds in the pouring rain. He does tease her but it’s a friendly bickering—it’s never his intention to assert his dominance or make her feel small. And of course, the small gestures. Helping her mount the horse, fending off the Sheriff, the mentioned already planting the ground and carrying her all the way far from the battlefield..

Some call it love.

What they said ^

Robin Hood (2010) is such an impressive movie, and not in the least because it has a scene where they take off the guys Chainmail during a relatively tense moment without it looking silly enough to break the tension.

Ordinarily, removing a chainmail shirt looks ridiculous because there’s no opening besides the obvious, it’s heavy, and it’s fitted, so you have no choice but to bend over and do a little dance with your arms forward while you wiggle out of it.

And they made that look normal instead of silly. Props to them. It impresses me every time.

I also really liked that scene because it showed really well how incredible heavy this shirt is

Since I'm revisiting much-maligned 2000s war epics, I gotta say I rewatched Robin Hood 2010 recently and it did not deserve the lambasting it got. I feel like at the time people complained it was too gritty and bloated but like??? Compared to what we get now??? It's downright jolly, and man they used every cent of that big budget for gorgeous sets and costumes. Plus you get a guhREAT Cate Blanchett--she carried the whole movie for me, honestly, she's such a wizard--ultra-classic Mark Strong, whippersnapper Oscar Isaac (supporting role by Oscar Isaac's bare ass, A+, 10/10, a joy to have in class), baby Luke Evans as like Thug Number 6, Matthew Macfadyen so slimy you forget he's Matthew Macfadyen, Russell Crowe... pretty much the same as every Russell Crowe tbh (STAND DOWN Aubreyad fam), a half-dozen other greats that you know and love

AND!!!!!!!

My boy!!!! THE boy, even! Alan Doyle as Alan-a-Dale!!! Casting saw that chance and they TOOK it! This is the movie that Bully Boy comes from, which I DO listen to weekly and I WILL belt out given the slightest provocation. Am I singing it now? IT'S LIKELY!

People don’t like the movie but praise Gladiator? The treatment of the female character was much much better then in gladiator, the humor is on point, the story more consistent then in gladiator (still bumpy at some points) the fighting scene were A LOT better, the lightning worked better. Like?? This movie is absolutely solid and enjoyable?!

People don’t like it? Wild.

It was - and is still - common that action movies introduce a female love interest who lost her husband and immediately makes out with the main hero

Male writers write so epic stories, and put so much thoughts into it, but see absolutely no problem with it

I just watched Gladiator and Eobin hood back to back. And Ridley Scott has this trope in both movies, ten years apart.

Yes it is better in Robin Hood, because it was ten years later but still yikes! Give women a break

I was today years old when i found out there isn't a "Robin Hood" book, like there is Dracula or Robinson Crusoe...

So which Robin Hood book can you recommend?

Also what was up with the costume designers? That looked like they recycled the Panem costumes and not like 11-something

Or did the showrunner forced them to do such costumes? In that case. I am so so sorry

I finally watched Robin Hood - 2018 and exucse me if i now will do three posts roasting this movie. If I will not do that my brain will explode.

What kind of bullshit cliché trope bingo was THAT?!

does no one realize that robin hood was a terrible role model for young kids? i mean you are stealing from people (illegal) and those people (usually) worked hard to get their wealth. it really demotivates people to succeed when they know they can get something someone else worked for.

is this what rich people worry about lmao

who knew the sheriff of nottingham had a blog

How does someone read Robin Hood and miss the part where it’s set in feudal England. He stole from people who got their wealth by exploiting the poor, incidentally that’s all rich people to this very day.

Tune in next week when they tell you the story of Ebeneezer Scrooge, a benevolent job creator, harassed during his sleeping hours by the hellish socialist dead.
