I allready tlaked with someone but maybe you can help me to understand it. Because what i do not get about that argument is 1: All Disney movies are not cultural appropiate to their orginial source. Like NONE of them. So why is there such a big discource about Mulan being not cultural appropiate? Of course we can argue here that chinese people are underrepsentated in hollywood movies but the same goes for the european cultures disney movie are based on. I mean i do not see a difference there
2. I often read that the animated movies was disrespect to the orginal legend. But with argument we couldn’t watch any movies oike Good Omens or Supernatural or actually ANYTHING. Like movie culture is allways taking a certain elements from a certain culture and turning it into something new
3. The songs where empowering to a whole generation of kids. Yeah they might be not accurate, but see point 1. I mean, do you really think danish people swim a lot in the see and sing songs over love in a musical tone? Like they sure don’t.
4. I get that the dragons are holy in china but then movies wouldn’t be allowed to turn anything holy into something cartoonish. I mean sure hollywood is damn powerful and we do not need to accept everything that hollywood does. But what about updating the old animated movie, erasing problematic elements, but leaving Mushu in, (and Shang and the songs)? Because i think it is 100% possible to show something holy as a cartoon, being sassy and small without being disrespectful. Like if creators take a few months to think about that and actually talking with chinese people they will definitly find a solution for that before erasing all
5. Why can there be multiple version/why can we not accept that other takes on our culture can exist? I mean, i know that there are allready a few mulan movies who are accurate to their orginial source. Like here in germany we have “das Sonntagsmärchen” who are accurate to the orginal european tellings and then there is the Disney version, like why can not both work?
