I think I know why I prefer Twelve/River over any other. For me, Matt Smith tried, and they can be believable and Matt really tries his hardest but (for me) there’s just something effortless about the way Peter Capaldi and Alex Kingston relate to each other.
It’s part chemistry and I think, part-Peter and Alex already know what it’s like to be in a long term marriage. They know how to play the worn grooves of two people who know each other so well, the spaces where they can be annoyed with each other with a lot of affection.
I’m so, so sad Peter and Alex only got one on screen time appearance together.
River flirting with Eleven was as subtle as a brick wall falling on a passerby, because that’s what was needed to get the Doctor’s attention. She needed to be ‘on’ all the time: playful, banter-y, and only occasionally do they enjoy the quiet.
River with Twelve, realizes that she doesn’t need to be always ‘on’, that Twelve knows and better, River knows that Twelve, the Doctor loves her. I think that’s the reason why in ‘Silence of the Library/Forests of the Dead’ we see a calmer River.
She doesn’t need to be performative with the Doctor… until she realizes this Doctor doesn’t even know her yet.
For me, River’s time with Eleven was the courtship and the wedding and her time with Twelve was the marriage.
Totally! I was never a big fan of the River x Doctor ship but the Peter Capaldi came around the corner and gave us The husbands of River song. And damn, that was so cute and soft. There was no kiss (and i am still sad about that) but there didn’t needed to be a kiss because of all the chemistry they had. But Matt did a good job. But his character wasn’t created for a wedding with a wife like River

Can someone help me? I don’t understand why ghost/data River was in „the name of the Doctor“?
Why did Vastra called her? How did Vastra even knew how to call ghost!river? Why didn’t she called living!River?
And why did the doctor said that River is dead? I mean for him River is dead and alive. Like anyone else. Martha, Amy, Rory, Donna and even Jack are also dead to him and (like Clara said) not even born yet. To him everyone is a ghost. And at this point he is still able to meet River in real live. So why was ghost!river suddenly so important? Also the living version of her knows the name of the Doctor? I don’t understand it?
