Interviewer: You‘ve said previous that you see Sherlock as queer but that we are welcome to our interpretations of your characters. Representation is a bit of a hot topic in media and you yourself know the importance of it with respect to autism and neurodivergence. Do you plan on making Sherlocks sexuality similarly integral to our understanding of his character and identity as his autism?

Joel: possible yeah (…) I’m going to give you a really rubbish answer. Get ready everybody. I honestly don’t know. Sometimes I take certain strides in term of his sexuality, and by strides … you know… they‘re kind of small things but every character is having a small step. I can understand if you want to see the queer side of Sherlock absolutely blossom. Those strides to not feel big at all, they need to be much bigger. But everyone is taking small steps, this is a long journey. (…) it is something I spend a lot of time thinking about. (…) we‘re in the zone now of… I think a lot of the audience know. And I know that John and Mariana know. (..) I think they will completely understand and know one another. But - in terms of - when we plunk it into adventures and when we tie it back to personal lives of any of the characters… I honestly don’t know because we spend so much time in the show just thinking about adventures. (…) but yeah, hopefully we go somewhere interesting and fun with it. (…) quite early on it just felt right so it’s not something where I have to drastically change the way I write or anything. It’s just something we all think about and talk about. So we‘ll see how we go with it…
