I am mostly a ghost these days....
30-something. Lady-person. Geek-girl. Gamer. Reader. Writer-type. Occasionally confuzzled by this whole tumblr-thing.
IMPORTANT: I would like anyone who follows me to be comfortable with my multi-fandom/generally spastic reblogging, so if you need me to tag specific things for blacklisting purposes PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE TO TELL ME. Thanks!

WARNINGS: NOT SPOILER FREE (I try to tag it, but sometimes I forget.), occasionally NSFW (again, I try to tag it but it's not 100%), I am sometimes slow to answer messages. Not because I don't like messages! But usually because I'm over-thinking the answer or I've spent too long thinking about the answer and something distracted me and now I don't remember that I was supposed to reply or I worked out my answer in my head but didn't actually send it but my brain doesn't know the difference; sometimes because I'm 12 hours into a 24 hour marathon gaming session; sometimes I'm asleep at my computer (my chair is very comfortable); I STALK TAGS. If you reblog something and add tags I will read them.

This particular moment in Star Trek is actually quite important. A lot of people don’t realise that understanding something is not the same as approving of something. This particular episode (A Taste of Armageddon) had a civilization where war was fought on computers instead of on the battlefield and instead of people dying in combat they would send the calculated amount of “casualities” into a camp to die. Kirk is outraged completely by this and rightly should be, but Spock is not so overtly disapproving. He understands why they might think their solution is better for their civilization and takes the time to think about why they are doing it. Even though he can understand why, he still believes it is wrong for them to be doing it.

There is a separation between understanding something and  approving of something that a lot of people seem to miss.

THIS THIS FOR THE LOVE OF EVERY GOD THIS.

It drives me batshit insane, too. I just got hit with the “understanding it means you’re FOR IT” bullshit in a political argument elsewhere, and the subtext - as always! - is that unless you’re for it, you shouldn’t try to understand it, because it’s Evil and understanding that is Wrong.

I hate that so very much I can’t even begin to even. And I don’t think it’s just “a lot of people.” At least in what passes for political discourse in the US, for example, it’s most people.

I have a whole theory about the fundamentalist cultural takeover of the GOP that gets into why - it’s a definitional part of that culture for reasons involving scriptural interpreation- but I won’t belabour that here. It’s just crazymaking.

The reverse (inverse?) is also true– a lot of people in arguments will yell “you just don’t understand!” if you disagree. (I’ve been guilty of that myself, honestly.)

The other important thing about this scene, which also crops up in Space Seed, is that it’s Spock.  Logic does not replace morality.  Here, Spock acknowledges the logic of the situation and still says it’s wrong.  In Space Seed, when everyone else is captivated by the mystique and …panache of Khan and his history (”yeah, I know he was a brutal dictator, but what a guy”) Spock is just sitting there like “seriously WTF you guys.”  And tells them so.  Notably long before Khan betrays their hospitality.

While Bones might disagree, this sends the very clear message that morality is not an emotional response.  Emotions do not create it, logic does not negate it, and if you are using logic to circumvent morality you are doing it wrong.  And Spock has no qualms about telling you so.
