“Henry is all about his family,  you won’t get a moment’s peace from now on.”  Emma chuckled and shook her head.  She wasn’t going to make Henry go through the same thing that she did,  Emma wasn’t going anywhere…and maybe she was biased,  but she was the best kid that she had ever met.  “What do you mean?”

“Oh no, I’m doomed to the adoration of my only son’s child. Whatever shall I do?” She was pleased by the idea. Milah considered how best to phrase the more delicate nature of certain events. “What does he know about what happened between his grandfather and myself? His paternal grandfather. I likely won’t be able to be very convincing if I’m made to tell him some sugarcoated version of it.”

“Well,  we were both lonely at the time…”  Jefferson still was if he was being honest,  he hadn’t really loved anyone since Alice,  and now that Grace had moved out of the house,  he wasn’t quite sure what to do with himself.  “He had a very twisted perspective on life, clearly.”  Jefferson wouldn’t deny that.
“He’s not my boyfriend,  it was never  that  serious.   Still, I’m sorry…but I’m glad you had the pirate.”  He knew how it was to lose someone.

“Well, good. You deserve better than him.” She chewed her lip. Reaching in her pocket she pulled out a folded bit of parchment and opened it to show him. “He’s very pretty,” she told him. “I almost got to see him again. I mean, he’s moved on and I was dead, but it would have been nice to see him again.” She glanced around and leaned in even closer, lowering her voice even more. “But then Rumple found something even worse than death for me.”

“A pirate?  Well,  I can imagine you must have been terrifying.”  There was no teasing in his tone,  Jefferson had never thought to underestimate someone being able to fight.  Though he does gratefully take the drink.  “He did,  kept it in his night stand,  he’s a surprisingly deep sleeper…and oh gods…I didn’t…I didn’t know that, I’m sorry.”

There was an implication there that she caught. She jerked her head up to look at the hatter in more than a little confusion. “You and my ex husband?” She remembered her times with him. Then more confusion filtered in. “His night stand?” She didn’t want to know why it was there. “Did he tell you pirates killed me? Hah! I’ll have you know that the terrifying pirate made sure I didn’t die alone, so.” She shrugged. “Your boyfriend is a liar.”

“Well,  you’re my new favorite human then.”  He grins from ear to ear and pulls the coins out of his pocket,  holding one out to Milah.  “Come now,  we’ve got to pay the ferryman to take us home.”

Milah snorted softly as she took the coin. “And you’re my favorite...” She trailed off and sighed. “You would think I’d know more about your...ah...history after all this time." Still, she hooked her hand through his elbow, because that seemed to be what one would do when leaving the underworld.

“I’ve been told that I offend people.”  He lets out a quiet laugh and shakes his head.  Well,  he was the Mad Hatter after all,  he was always going to be a little strange.  “I saw a sketch of you back in our land…Rumple must of known I was adept at getting my nose stuck where it didn’t belong.”

“I was a pirate, darling. My sensibilities haven’t been delicate in a number of years.” She leaned back and poured them each a drink. No point in being rude. Sliding one of the tumblers of rum toward him she arched a brow. “Rumple kept a sketch of me? I figured for sure he’d have burned it all. He didn’t seem overly sentimental about me when he was crushing my heart.”

“Not much really,  you’re helping me annoy my dear old dad by breaking his rules.  I’d like to flip him the bird,  if you will.”  He smirked.

“That’s fair.” Milah could understand fatherly issues. She shrugged and looked at the devil himself. “Let’s do this. It isn’t my religion we’re blaspheming here.”

“Don’t take this the wrong way – but I’m glad you’re not dead.”  Rumple has certainly screwed up when it came to her and he truly didn’t understand it,  but after his own past,  how the hell could he judge?

“Why would I take that the wrong way? Is there a wrong way to take it?” Then confusion and curiosity set in and she tilted her head. “How do you know me well enough to know I should have been? I’d remember a face like yours.”

“I’m going top side if you’d like a ride back to the land of the living.”  Well,  it was certainly about time that he ( forgive the pun ) got the hell out of here.  But nowhere in the rules did it say that he couldn’t take someone with him.

Did she hear him right? “Well...yes.” Of course she wanted to go back up there. Being up there meant she wasn’t down here. “What’s the catch?”

“I think Henry loves you by the way,  he wouldn’t stop talking about you when I got home.”  She was glad that her son had finally been given a chance to meet Milah after everything that had happened.

“That feeling is more than mutual,” she said as she sat on the couch. “Though I’d still adore him to bits even if he didn’t.” He was, after all, her grandson. “Though I’m not sure how I should answer if he has certain questions.” Did she behave where her former husband was concerned?

“I needed to hear that.”  It was going to take a moment to get used to,  but they both deserved a second chance in life,  didn’t they?  Neal had certainly been trying to make himself at home here in Storybrooke,  though admitting that would also involve him telling his mother about Emma.
“I like the second option,  I could help you shop.”  It might not have been something that they could do back home,  but Neal just loved the idea of spending more time with his mother.  Hearing that his father didn’t know made him feel a little better.  “Good.  Though I did used to hope that would make Killian my step-father.”  He teased softly.

“What else do you need to hear?” she asked. She wanted to tell him everything, but if there were certain things he needed to hear about first, she’d make sure to say them!

She beamed bright at him and moved to hook her arm through his. “Good! I need to get meat from the butcher and the supermarket has a bunch of fruit set aside from me. Did you know people will actually pay more for jams and preserves if its homemade?” Then her heart did a confusing jumble of lurching painfully and soaring all at once, leaving her a bit breathless. “You know about Killian?” She cleared her throat and blinked several times. “He’d lead me to believe he would have liked that, too.”

“Please stay.”  Though a part of him would always understand why she had left,  despite everything,  he wasn’t completely heartless.  But being left with his father…Neal took a breath and shook that thought off as he held her.
“I have so many things to tell you.”  He had a whole life,  well a few life times it felt like,  but he wanted a chance to tell her all of it.  So he took a deep breath,  reluctantly pulling away.  “Where are you staying?  Maybe I can give you a lift home.”  He still had his arms on her shoulders,  smiling wide.

“I couldn’t think of any place I’d rather be,” she assured him, holding on tight and almost afraid to let go. At last, at last, at last. Centuries living (and not living) with that ache of not being able to hold him were almost worth it just to have this moment.

Her shoulders sagged a little and she settled her hand on his face when he pulled back a little. “I have a van that has supplies in it.” She perked up rather quickly. “I don’t need to go back any time soon. I haven’t bought anything that needs dealt with right away yet.” She could get her frozen goods later. Her smile grew wide. “We can talk if you want. Or I could buy the rest of my supplies and show you exactly where I live so you know where to find me.” She leaned in a little close. “I don’t think even your father knows that much. It’s one of the few places in town he doesn’t own.”

“Yes,  well there are a few lazy ones too.”  Killian huffed a sigh at that idea.  He might have been a little biased towards Milah,  but he didn’t understand the idea of not wanting to know her.  “Well I’m glad you ventured out today.”  He murmured,  his gaze never leaving her face.
He didn’t sleep much,  but gods he really needed to,  he just didn’t know how to explain all of that to Milah now.  He shook his head at that idea.  “There might have been,  at least a moment,  but it was just that…a moment.”  Killian didn’t want to know what he and Emma might have been,  he knew where he belonged.
“Oh I did,  even got quite close to killing him a few times.”  He smirked.  And maybe he still wished that he had done it,  and if Baelfire wasn’t alive…then he might have tried again.  He groaned when she prodded his ribs and nodded again. “Perhaps.  But it was worth it.”

“People had talked last time I was in for supplies about the pawn shop owner going out to look for his son. I sort of came back for supplies early.” She stopped running her fingers through his hair and soothed the spikey mess back down before hooking her arm through his. “Now I’m doubley glad for it.”

Her eyebrows furrowed together. “Do you want longer than a moment with her?” She didn’t want him resenting her with what could have been. She knew what it was like to resent someone, and the idea of being that for him made her shudder. She grinned a little. “I could live with being jealous.”

She snorted and picked up her drink when it arrived. It was nice and bubbly, the sort that seemed to dance in the nose. “It’s only because he found Baelfire I’m not sad you haven’t quite gotten it.” She chewed her lip and soothed her hand over his ribs. “I wouldn’t have been upset you’d moved on. Met someone to make fat babies with that then made you fat grandbabies. But the selfish part of me is really glad you’re here.”

“There are a few okay people in this town you would actually like.”  He chuckled,  shaking his head.  Well,  only a few,  Killian knew that there were still some people who would never trust him.
“I’m always exhausted.”  He was still smiling when he said it,  but at least he wasn’t trying to murder Rumpelstiltskin anymore, though it wasn’t for lack of desire to.  Killian still thought that he deserved it.
When Milah was finally sitting next to him, he practically pressed himself up against her,  needing the reminder that this was real.  But that was something he had been afraid of.  “I was still in the enchanted forest,  planning the murder of your ex-husband.”  He admitted.  Well,  it was the truth.  He didn’t see the point in hiding it from her.
“Lets go with the roast beef,  it will bring back some good memories.”  He had forgotten everything else but this.

“I liked a few of them well enough when the whole ordeal was still underway. But I don’t believe anyone that hasn’t seen me come to town for supplies has sought me out.” She glanced out the window toward the pawnshop. “In some ways that’s a blessing.”

She clicked her tongue again when he admitted to always being exhausted. When she was settled next to him, her fingers sifted through his hair, both for the comforting familiarity of it but also to see if he needed a haircut. “Perhaps we could take a nap later, if there’s no one to get jealous over it.”

She sighed. “Hopefully you made his life hell.” She raised her hand for the waitress and ordered them roast beef, along a soda for her so he could be assaulted by bubbles. Then her eyes narrowed as other rumors she’d heard circled in her brain. She prodded her fingers along his ribs. “Did you get yourself hit by a car trying to do this?”

Killian almost jumped out of his seat when he heard her voice so close to his ear,  he hadn’t expected for this to ever happen again,  let alone for him to just about pass out.  “Gods almighty…”
When Killian turned and actually saw that Milah was right there,  his eyes went wide and he lost the ability to speak for a moment.  He had seen her die, she…was he dreaming?  No,  most of his dreams were nightmares,  not the first love of his life coming back from the dead.
“If I known you were alive that would be true.”  She was there,  rally there,  he reached out and touched the side of her face out instinct…just to make sure that she was alive.
“Milah…”

She winced a little in sympathy at his reaction. Had she scared the life out of him? She brushed her fingers across his cheek, much as she’d done in a memory she’d relived countless times.

“If I’d known you were alive, I would have been less inclined to become a hermit.” Her eyebrows drew together in concern as she clicked her tongue. “Poor darling. You look exhausted.”

She glanced toward the counter, and when Granny was faced away she climbed over the back of the bench to slide in between him and the wall. Apparently she wasn’t quick enough, as an indignant squawk could be heard, but she did her best to ignore it. Instead, she stayed well within his personal space, touching as much of him as she could that would not get either of them kicked out for indecency and maintaining some sense of decorum. “You weren’t here during the curse. I’d remember.” He likely came over recently, then. How much did he know about the here and now? “I could order us lunch. The roast beef is close to what we might have gotten at one of the better ports, if you’re looking for familiar. A hamburger if you’re looking for a compromise between here and there. I’d order it without onions, they put them on raw and it’s disgusting.” She was rambling a little, yes. But if she took care of him, maybe he’d forget to tell her if the flirtation was more than flirtation for a few minutes.

@afaroffadventure for a thingy

Milah expected Baelfire to have been wrong. Or perhaps he’d told her in a cruel yet deserved attempt at hurting her just a fraction of how she’d hurt him. Yet there he was, sitting in a booth and facing away from her. She could practically see the lines of broody pirate coming off him.

Carefully and quietly she snuck toward him, ignoring concerned faces as people realized who she was going toward. She climbed in the booth behind him, trembling hand settling on his shoulder so he wouldn’t turn around and she leaned in to murmur in his ear. After a moment she pulled the lollipop from her mouth and spoke with a casuality she did not feel. It would be so much easier if she could just say ‘hi’ like a normal person. “Rumor has it you have been flirting with the mother of my grandchild.” Closing her eyes she breathed him in with a long sigh. “If I didn’t know any better, love, I’d think you were trying to make me jealous.”
