me when cass. when. when. me when. batgirl issue 19.

“no one dies tonight”. CASS WAS BORN AS A FIGHTER! SHE WAS NEVER TAUGHT TO READ! SHE WAS NEVER TAUGHT TO SPEAK. SHE IS NOT GOOD WITH WORDS! BUT WITH ALL HER FIGHTING PROWESS! WHEN SHE BREAKS INTO THE PRISON TO STOP A DEATH SENTENCE! AND IT BRINGS HER TO AN OLD LADY, SHE FAILS AND LEAVES SAD! BC FOR ALL HER MIGHT! SHE CANT STOP SOMETHING SO MUCH LARGER THAN HER AND CARRIES MORE NUANCE THAN SHE KNOWS HOW TO COMMUNICATE WITH A SOCIETY SHE WAS NEVER TAUGHT TO COMMUNICATE WITH.

I've started keeping some of my favorite "Cassandra Cain can beat Batman in a fight" panels in a folder so I can drag them out whenever the "but prep time!" fanboys start whining about it. It's pretty satisfying, actually

Some examples:

Cass implies that Bruce's fighting skills are inferior to her own and then effortlessly beats him in a spar, with him being unable to even touch her, after regaining her 'body reading' abilities from Shiva:

"I don't have to do this. I can still study Batman's method. I can be good enough for the costume. I can be...mediocre. For a lifetime. Or perfect. For a year." -Batgirl (2000) #9
"I can see it now. Every muscle. Every bone. Every breath. I'd forgotten...what it felt like. Seeing everything." -Batgirl (2000) #9

After Cass beats Lady Shiva, Bruce congratulates her by acknowledging it's something even he hasn't been able to do:

"Even I've never beaten Shiva hand-to-hand." -Batgirl (2000) #27

Bruce has also told Cass that "no one" is the fighter she is, even if other Batfamily members (like Tim) have skills she lacks:

"[Tim's] not the fighter you are. No one is. But he has other skills you don't. You complement each other. You can teach each other." -Batgirl (2000) #58

Deathstroke once said that Bruce couldn't even beat Cass "on his best day":

"Batman keeps you close because he knows what you are. What you were born to be.......truth his, he couldn't take you down on his best day." -World War III #2

And even Bruce himself has straight up said that he'd lose a no-holds-barred fight with her:

"You ever think about what would happen if you had to fight her, for real. Not sparring. The real deal." "Of course I have. I'd lose." -Detective Comics (2016) #951

The one time we've seen Bruce and Cass fight "for real" (Batgirl #50) ends in a draw, but Cass strictly uses hand-to-hand while Bruce has to pull out all the stops and multiple gadgets for it to be a draw; he's also mostly on the defensive and gets temporarily dropped by Cass at least twice during the fight.

Bonus: she one-shots Dick WHILE fighting Bruce:

I wish the fandom at large could move past the endless discussion on Cass's fighting skills and whether "she's the best" (she is) so we can talk about something else, because constantly having to have the same conversation is incredibly tiring.

Cass is indisputably the best fighter in the Batfam. It's also ultimately one of the least interesting things about her as a character, because both Cass and everyone around her are at their best whenever everyone (writers and fans) accept her fighting prowess and move on so a genuinely interesting story can be told.

"the parallels between Bruce and the robins all becoming orphans young" ok that's nice but the parallels between Bruce and Cass both having lost their innocence after being confronted with death at 8 years old. The way they both have let the grief, the guilt, the impotence haunt them ever since and transformed it into more. The way they both, though in different ways, lost their parent(s). The way that the traumatic instances (and their upbringing until then) couldn't have been more different, yet it affected them so similarly and are the pillars for their current moral code and suicidal tendencies. Can't think about them too much or I go insane
