Some of you have never shipped a rare pair and it shows.
Some of you have never invented a rarepair, written the only fic for it, and then wallowed alone in your special mud pit of crack pairings and it shows

want to be clear that if i ever talk about a headcanon and then later discuss a headcanon that is directly contradictory to the first one, that’s because headcanons exist in a quantum state where they are all simultaneously true and not true up until the point where i discuss it in detail, in which case that is the one that is true in that instance. schroedinger’s headcanons
*reads a gorgeous line in a fanfic* oh my god. how is this possible. how did they even fucking think of this. the symbolism is spot on. the planets are fucking aligned, everything is one and all and the world is complete, my soul is at peace
The best type of fanon is “this is obviously a mistake on the part of the creator but we are going to continue to create in-universe explanations for it with a seriousness that approaches spite”
me, rewatching my favourite media for the hundredth time: it’s about the comfort. it’s about the nostalgia. it’s about lacking the necessary emotional bandwidth to take in and process new things in this year of our lord 2021
[the absolute worst thing a fictional character can do is admit to liking a food because the fandom will make that their entire personality for the rest of time]
Fanfiction is awesome because you can watch your otp fall in love a thousands times , in a thousand different ways
Unless your otp is a rare pair, in which case you can watch them fall in love six times, in six different ways.
And you wrote four of them.
those moments in au fics when you finally figure out how the author is reinterpreting a specific canon event and you basically go ‘oh snap that’s brilliant’ for five minutes straight
Gif maker appreciation time: I’ve discovered a lot of shows/movies thanks to tumblr and it seems that nearly every time I see a gifset first and then the show, I’m surprised (and a little disappointed) because the scenes are just…not as pretty as the gifsets. Like a scene will look too dark, but the gifmaker will have brightened everything up so I can actually see the character’s expressions, or they will have made it so the lights glow warm and soft, or painted it in pretty colors, or highlighted the color of someone’s lips or the blush in their cheeks. And as a gifmaker myself, I know what kind of work goes into gif making and how you can change how a scene looks, and yet I am always still surprised when I see how differently someone’s made a scene look in a gifset, and am in awe of their artistic eye and how they saw a regular scene and were able to turn it into something so stunning.
My fellow gif makers are basically artists and I love and appreciate you guys.
thought 1 when someone doesn’t like my favorite character: okay this is fine everyone is allowed their own opinions whatever
thought 2: enemy
thought 3: okay you’re being irrational
thought 4: how very dare they
i love to headcanon steve as this aggressively progressive dude but like, he begged to be part of the us army,,,,,, we can’t just Forget That
He joined to literally fight Nazis the fuck you on about?
Minecraft lore is deeper than i remember
he was also like 20 and the Internet didn’t exist so besides the fact that fighting the Nazis was one of the few good things the military has ever done, just mayhaps Steve wasn’t fully briefed on the sins of US militarism and imperialism
I love that y’all think tha white people in the army in WWII joined to fight the evils of the Nazi party and not because of nationalism. The US sent minorities back to Germany to be gassed and only got involved after Germany threatened us.
captain america was created by joe simon and jack kirby, two jewish second generation immigrants. you can argue about what the character has come to represent culturally today but it’s absolutely insensitive to erase what the character was supposed to represent for the creators at the time.
hell this is the image on jack kirby’s wikipedia page next to the “entry into comics” section
it was absolutely a political statement, and one that positioned america against fascism, against antisemitism, which is more than we can say for some modern media or even the orange stain running our country
I would also like to add, he was introduced, like this, while the USA was not in the war, and was selling weapons to Germany -among other things. It was a very dangerous, very unpopular statement to make at the time. People love to do the ‘punch Hitler’ thing now, but when Captain America was first released with this cover, this was an extremely controversial statement.
Captain America was created in direct response to how the USA was reacting to the war at the time as a direct call to action against injustice specifically. Created by two Jewish men who were very much affected by all of this. They specifically designed him to look like he did because that was the ““Aryan Ideal”“ as part of that statement. That is why they made him blond, blue-eyed, white, tall, and muscular. They also called him ‘Captain America’ to implicitly tie the United States to this statement. This was a metaphor of ‘The USA has to stop letting others be hurt, it’s time to step up and do something’.
It’s not only insensitive to erase that, it’s Antisemitic to call a Jewish-made character that was a political statement against antisemitism in the 1940′s by people who were fed up with watching their loved ones die while people said they ‘shouldn’t get involved’ in a massive, global genocide attempt a ‘symbol of military industrial complex imperialism and nationalism’ when he was made as a symbol of resistance and a call to fight fascism and antisemitism.
Has anyone mentioned yet that American fascists were so pissed about Captain America that some American Nazis showed up at the Marvel offices to “show what Real Americans would do to Captain America”. Jack Kirby literally rolled up his sleeves and would have beaten the shit out of them if they hadn’t run off by the time he got to the lobby.
Like, fuck you if you refuse to accept that JEWISH AMERICANS created a character that is intended to protect Jews and other marginalized groups.
This.
I am begging people on AO3 to stop tagging characters and relationships unless they are a major, featured, significant part of their stories. If you want people to know the worldstate of your fic that badly, put your pairings of choice for this fic in the author’s note. Character tags aren’t warnings; I’m not going to throw a fit if I come across an untagged minor character if I’m reading fic for that fandom, especially if they have one (1) snarky line and then vanish.
Clogging up the tags like this makes finding actual fic that focuses on side characters and supporting relationships a slog. I truly dislike FF.net for a variety of reasons, but sometimes I think they had something going when they were like, “PICK FOUR. YOU GET FOUR.”
Something I think is neat and really cute about fanfic is that there’s a personal version of each character in it? Like, each writer focuses on different traits and qualities and even though there can be a hundred fics with the same character, they’re really not exactly the same.
So even if you and I are writing a fic with the same characters, they can still be uniquely different despite having the same core and they’re each dear to us personally as our take on the person.
I don’t know, I just think it’s cute that each writer cherishes these characters in personal and unique ways.
This is the heart of the Two Cakes rule
It really is.
What’s more, every reader who’s read more than one version of a character has their internal perception of that character enriched by the versions of that character written by those authors.
And those are the result of every version of the character in every fic the authors have read.
It’s a massive progression towards complexity and realism for the character in the minds of the storytellers.
In a way, it’s Infinite Cakes.
Reasons why people write fanfictions
5% just wanna write and have an idea
10% canon did WHAT!? I’m sorry(I’m not) to disagree BUT *write intensely*
15% wanna write something with these characters specifically
70% didn’t find the very specific and precise fanfic they’ve been searching for hours and came to the inevitable conclusion that they have to provide it themself *mutters* “ fuck ”
