she knows she’s not allowed to bark at the cat, so her loophole is just to make a bunch of noises that are not barking instead.

oh to be a little dog sprinting at top speeds around the house with reckless abandon to release all the stress pent up from your extremely harrowing bathtime
So I have my dog trained to sit when she wants pet (she used to be very wild and jumpy when we first got her, it’s been a long road) so now when she wants attention she just sits very still and stares VERY intently at you (she’s extremely non verbal and hardly makes sound in general)
So, today I let her out and didn’t realize the fence gate was wide open, and she just shoots right out at this older man and a small girl (bc she just LOVES PEOPLE. A lot) The girl kinda shrieks and the man pulls her behind him (which I get it, my dogs small but she’s still part Pitt, and she was running full throttle at them) and all of a sudden my dog just pulls up completely, full stop, and plants her ass on the ground in front of them, staring and wagging her tail.
And they just stand there, staring at each other. She’s like, vibrating with energy, waiting for pets, and these people are like “wtf” so I run up and explain and the old guy was just so thrilled honestly. The little girl starts petting her and the old dude was gushing about how trained and well behaved she is (I mean, ignoring the fact that she shot out of the gate LMAO) but like, that just made me so happy. I’ve put so much time and effort into training her and making her feel safe and comfortable after he (horrifying) past and I’m just so so proud of her.
TLDR; my dog is a good gorl and I luv her
I love how her tail is kinda blurred so we can assume it is operating at top speed.
what a beauty
A dog raises a lip when a stranger reaches to pet them—I am uncomfortable—and we punish her for saying so. She snaps at another dog for jumping on her back—I don’t like what you are doing—and we tell her, “Be nice!” The comb catches a knot in her fur at the groomer’s and pulls her skin, and she growls—That hurts me—and she receives a pop on the nose. We tell our dogs over and over: No talking. We pave the way for the moments when they just can’t take it anymore, and reach the end of their rope because nobody has been listening to them. The entire point of ritualised communication, signaling and threatening behaviour in nature is to avoid actual conflicts and altercations. To assume that warnings are just an indication of intent to harm is backward. Think about it this way: In the wild, there are no veterinary hospitals waiting to provide stitches and antibiotics after a fight. So there are “words” that animals are born with knowledge of and, much likes us, learn to speak fluently over the course of their lives through experience. These words are basic language skills for dogs to use and comprehend. When they cannot use them, they are at a social deficit with one another, because they are robbed of their voice about their experiences and feelings. Our dogs are misunderstood and backed into a corner without recourse, simply because we do not speak dog.

A year ago, I did these drawings for the City of Charles Sturt (South Australia) and they have been printed up as big billboards for their dog park. I wish there were signs like these at every dog park all over the world!
A comment on my instagram:
“ i was just watching dogs at the dog park in silver lake yesterday, and so much was wrong. dogs being bullied, being ganged up on, group chase, over arousal. the parents had no clue. wish every dog park would post this. “
In the meantime, there are other posters with the same message that I did for IAABC which can be downloaded and shared. More info HERE.
Thank you to the City of Charles Sturt for setting a great example!
