Can we talk for a minute about how young Gaby is in the grand scheme of things? She’s only 24!!! I always forget the team’s ages, but I think it adds so much to their characters actually:
INCREDIBLE dissection, I love every bit of this. Especially about Gaby's youth, because I've talked about moments in the movie that I absolutely adore because they're subtle reminders at how young she is, how new to this game she is. The biggest one for me is when the Diadema explodes: Solo watches emotionlessly, Illya watches with all sorts of things playing on his face, but Gaby turns away. She can't make herself look. Even after all the Vinciguerras have done; to her, to her family, even to her new partners. She still can't bring herself to watch the Diadema explode. God, I love that detail, it's so fucking good.
However. I must point out that some of the dates for Solo are wrong in terms of movie-canon timelines.
Solo has listed in his file, "Sergeant US Army, Distinguished Service 1945 - 1952" so that is correct, and according to his listed birthday, March 9, 1929, that would have in fact made him 16 at the time of enlisting (which means he lied about his age, because after the Pearl Harbor Attack of 1941, the enlistment age was dropped from 18 years old to 17 years old, so he was still a year too young). Those dates are correct.
However, the mugshot that has the year listed as 1958 has to be a prison transfer mugshot. These are taken when prisoners are transferred from one jurisdiction to another, and with what we know about Solo, it would make sense for him to he shuttled around to different (likely increasing in security) prisons.
The reason this has to be a tranfer mugshot is because his sentence is listed as, "15 years suspended sentence for robbery, handling stolen goods, and serial theft of art and antiquities". And at the beginning of the film, Sanders tells him, "You owe me five more years."
Which means in 1963, he had to have been working for the CIA for about ten years, making the date of his initial arrest 1953.
The "1945-1952" Distinguished Service supports this.
Now that bares the question; if Solo had been working for the CIA in 1958, why is there a mugshot of him in that year? This is getting into speculation territory, but I think there are two possible options:
1) Solo was 29 in 1958, I wouldn't be surprised if he still bucked against the CIA at every chance, landing him in prisons on multiple occasions, even under their thumb. Sanders even points out his rebellious streak in the same speech he tells Solo that he owes him five more years; "Now, I know you've been taking care of yourself on the side. Wetting your beak, so to speak. We don't pay you enough to be able to put….truffles in your risotto, Solo. But don't ever make the calamitous error of mistaking my deliberate shortsightedness….for blindness."
Or
2) Solo was arrested under an alias in 1958 while on a mission, and that mugshot happened to be in his file. Again, he's 29, likely still developing certain skillsets. It isn't unlikely that a mission went sideways and he was arrested, his cover blown. It also isn't unlikely that the CIA pulled some strings to get him transferred to a New York prison to have him believably back in their custody. My only proof of this is this discrepancy in Solo's file vs. the mugshot: In the mugshot, his height is listed as 6'3. In his file, his height is listed as 6'1. If you're undercover, it's likely that you'll try and change physical attributes about yourself in order to be less identifiable. There is also no name on the mugshot board, so we have no way of knowing who they thought they were arresting- Solo or an alias.
There's also, of course, the possibility that this movie is just fucked when it comes to continuity and timelines, but from what I can gather from the transcript of the movie and his file at the end, these are Solo's important dates.
To recap, though, Solo:
- Enlisted at 16 years old in 1945
- Got arrested by the CIA at 24 in 1953
- Struck a deal for a suspended sentence of 15 years
- Got arrested/transferred at 29 in 1958
- In 1963, he has 5 more years left in his suspended sentence
Ahhh, thank you Mawce for your additions and pointing out the Solo timeline issues; I edited the original post -- someone go edit the fandom wiki, haha 😆
I LOVE your thoughts so much. Idk a lot about how this all works, so forgive my ignorance, but do you think Solo could've struck a reduced sentence in return for working for the CIA? I guess it wouldn't say "suspended" then, though. Again, I love love LOVE your ideas about all of this and how Solo could've been in/out of prison/the CIA during this time. 🩵
Ohohoho I LOVE these follow up questions, and I'm in a unique position where I have close family with personal experience in both the U.S. Military life (Mom was an Army Brat) and prison (Dad and Tío both went to prison, my Tío for a felony [got addicted to painkillers after a devastating car crash]).
To address your FASCINATING tags first (LOVED thinking about this and talking it through with my mom):
U.S. Military contracts are four years at a time, so in 1952, he was one year shy of finishing his second contract. Leaving the military in '52 would've meant he went AWOL, which is never mentioned anywhere.
Now, for Distinguished Service, that's a medal that's awarded for extraordinary work in the field. Here's the official description of it (or the closest I could find, at least. It seems that the British Army has a Distinguished Service, but the US Army has the Distinguished Service Cross. Given that Guy Ritchie is a British Man, the discrepancy is understanable I think lmao):
The Distinguished Service Cross (DSC) is the second highest military decoration that can be awarded to a member of the United States Army (and previously, the United States Army Air Forces). It is awarded for extraordinary heroism:
• While engaged in action against an enemy of the United States;
• While engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force; or
• While serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in an armed conflict against an opposing armed force in which the United States is not a belligerent party.
Which means that the "1945-1952" was likely just when he was Doing A Good Job™️. It's more than likely that he just started pouring more effort into Art Theft and focused less on being a Soldier in that last year (maybe that had a hand in him being caught? 👀).
As for the question of "Do they take away the Distinguished Service when they arrest you?" the answer is a definitive it depends.
(⚠️CW: SA⚠️ I will include bright emojis after so you can scroll past if you'd like. Keep yourself safe💕)
My Mom's birth father was convicted of statutory rape. He raped and molested several little girls, including my Mom (she has given me explicit permission to share this on multiple occasions). He was Honorably Discharged.
"An Honorable Discharge is the top-most ranking a service member can receive upon leaving the military. This status indicates you have faithfully and patriotically performed your duties, and conducted yourself in a manner of benefit to your branch."
(Although, in a positive light, my Mom's mother witnessed his commanding officer screaming at him and ripping all the medals and patches off his fatigues after it all came out, and the man had to just stand there and take it. So he got some just punishment.)
💕💕💕💕💕💕💕CW: OVER💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
Meanwhile, her uncle, a fantastic man, drove two miles on base to get home after a party, got arrested for a DUI, and was Dishonorably Discharged;
"A Dishonorable Discharge is the harshest discharge status a military service member can receive, as it is given via court-martial and not by military administration. Service members who receive this standing are accused of felonies involving homicide, fraud, desertion, and crimes that would put any person, service member or not, in hot water. If you receive a Dishonorable Discharge, it is not possible to reenlist with the military."
(Source)
So it's very possible that Solo was just Honorably Discharged and got to keep all his bells and whistles.
Now for the prison questions! Officially, Solo was charged with "robbery, handling stolen goods, and serial theft of art and antiquities." Lets go through those individually.
Robbery - Given the fact that Solo was A) a soldier with Distinguished Service and B) never caught until his luck ran out, we can probably assume it was a Robbery in the First Degree, which, in New York, has a minimum sentence of 5 years and a maximum of 25 years:
"Lastly, this same person, if convicted of Robbery in the First Degree, Penal Law 160.15, a class “B” violent offense, faces up to twenty-five years in jail with a minimum of five years in prison."
Handling Stolen Goods - For this, the closest New York charge I could find was Grand Larceny In The Third Degree, which actually directly mentions Art Theft. This charge, for a repeat offender like Solo, carries a minimum sentence of 2 to 4 years and a maximum of 3½ to 7 years:
"Even worse, maybe you had access to artwork and stole a painting worth $35,000." .... "If you are a predicate felon, then there is a mandatory minimum of two to four years in state prison and maximum of three and one half to seven years in prison."
Serial Theft - Now this one is also a Grand Larceny charge, but it is Grand Larceny of The First Degree in New York. Solo was charged with both degrees due to the nature of his crimes. The minimum sentence for this charge is, for a repeat offender, 4½ to 9 years and the maximum is 12 to 25 years:
"If someone is a predicate, the mandatory minimum is between four and a half to nine years, building to a maximum of 12 and a half to 25 years."
All these sentences put us snuggly in the range of 15 years, and they give us some room to toy with the idea that he was initially sentenced to 20+ years, and the CIA held that over his head; "We can cut your time down from twenty to fifteen. And you'll be out of here, traveling the world, protecting your country...." 👀👀👀
So now let's talk about the "Suspended Sentence":
"In criminal law, a suspended sentence is an alternative to imprisonment where a judge may partially or entirely suspend the convicted individual's prison or jail sentence so long as they fulfill certain conditions. If the conditions are violated, then the state may petition to revoke the suspended sentence and reimpose the original term of the sentence by proving, in an evidentiary hearing and by a preponderance of evidence standard, that the defendant indeed violated the condition(s)."
Now, legally, suspended sentences are meant to be chances at rehabilitation, rewarding good behavior and such. Obviously in Solo's case, the CIA pulled some strings and got his sentence suspended so that he would be forced to work for them. Those are the "conditions" Solo had to agree to. (And he's a 24 year old who went from Golden Child to being thrown in a New York prison for who knows how long before the CIA worked out that deal. Why wouldn't he take that deal? He had no real idea of what he was getting into.)
Also keeping in mind that this is a fictional movie, we also have TONS of room to play with ideas like Solo getting thrown back in prison for acting out (perhaps in 1958 👀), deals to reduce sentences, etc. I just think it's a ton of fun to look at the Real Life Implications of the information we've been given lmao 💕💕💕
This got......so long. I did not mean to write another essay 😅 Whoops!
why must the guard dog characters unquestioning devotion to their master be born from trust or some shit cant they be manipulated into it. raised into it. brainwashed even

Summary:
"The roof is a place of morbid comfort, for him. When things felt too heavy, he would climb the stairs to the hatch and just sit on the ledge. He would lean back on his palms, letting the bite of gravel ground him, and just trace constellations, listening to the night birds call." ••• Illya likes to sit on the rooftop when his thoughts get too much. Solo tends to join him.
Excerpt:
Behind him, he hears the entrance to the roof open, and Illya doesn't have to turn to know whose footsteps are approaching him. “Anything specific, tonight?” Illya swallows thickly and shakes his head. He can feel the dark circles under his eyes, he knows how empty his stare will be, so he keeps his gaze on the couple– they've almost made it to the next corner. “Okay,” Solo assess, pausing at his side, “Can I sit with you?” Illya spares him a glance, then, and sees the soft, encouraging smile on Solo's lips. He nods subtly, imperceptible to most. But not to Solo.

Character: Illya Kuryakin
Warnings: Angst, Nightmares, emotional hurt/no comfort
"Open Your Eyes (Or Just Try To)"
Illya had never been a dreamer. When he slept, only blackness greeted his consciousness. Nightmares weren't uncommon, however they were often replays of unsavory memories or missions gone wrong. Near death experiences, fearing for his partners’ lives, the abuse of old handlers, his father's screams and his mother's belt. They were never abstract, like those of his peers. Monsters never haunted him, imaginary killers or threats that were laughable once awakened never manifested.
But recently, they've been changing.
Now, they often begin with the chaotic sounds of agony and brutality that herald a battle. It's faint at first; distant, just out of reach, but still close enough to make his heart pound. Then the echoing gunshots encroach, the shouting grows louder, death looms over the horizon. Adrenaline pulses through his veins and he tries to ready himself for whatever hell is approaching. Illya tries to ready himself, to take in his surroundings and make a plan, but it's too dark. Thick, inky black clouds his vision, and while he's able to get his weapon armed and in his hands, he can't see anything around him. And when the war drums are upon him, its not his own scream that reaches his ears first.
It's Gaby's.
Or Solo's.
Or sometimes they both give their cry of pain or effort from either side of him, before the distorted clashes of metal and flesh drown him. But no matter what he hears, the darkness prevails. He can claw at his eyes, try to rip the wool off or shred his eyelids enough to see, but all can glimpse is fractured images and light before its darkness once again.
Other nights, he drifts into the warmth and safety of a London flat, though he can never tell which one. He can feel the cushioned couch or armchair beneath him, hear the music crackling from the radio, the laughter of his partners as they bicker in the kitchen or dance in the living room. Illya wants nothing more than to see for himself this beautiful reality, one he hadn't let himself believe to be possible. But yet again, something keeps his vision blackened. Yet again, he's robbed of the sense that was drilled into him to keep on high alert at all times. He scrubs at his eyes until they burn, rinses them with water, tries to manually pry open his heavy eyelids, but nothing works. He's tormented by the almosts, the golden lighting that creeps through the tiny cracks between his lashes. He feels someone tug at his arm, with words of encouragement he can never quite remember. But his mind is clouded.
All he can think about is that his eyes are glued shut.
The scenarios change, but that single recurring fact is what unnerves him the most. Illya is never able to open his eyes. This simple task, something instinctual, that he shouldn't even have to think to achieve, he has somehow failed over and over and over again.
Illya wakes up in a cold sweat, disoriented, eyes wide and wild. He tracks every inch of his bedroom, memorizing the space repeatedly until the blood stops marching in his ears and his chest stops heaving.
He's never been able to get back to sleep after those nightmares. Mostly because, as childish as it sounds, he doesn't want to risk closing his eyes. So he just sits up, knees drawn to his chest, and stares at the slit in the curtains over his window, watching indigo fade into gray, gray into lilac, lilac into orange, and orange into blue.
And he keeps his eyes open for as long as he can stand it.
Napoleon: *gets down on one knee*
Illya: *also drops to the ground* what are we looking for?
Napoleon, reaching for the ring in his pocket: Peril......
*visibly shaking*
I HAVE to steal your tags here, @mybelovedillya , because the dog you described sounds an awful like a Great Pyrenees, which is a breed that is very close to my heart for Reasons™️
Big, white, fluffy dog that is often more commonly seen in homes as a family dog. They're massive, and generally good-tempered, insanely soft, tolerate a lot of bullshit, loyal, and fiercely protective.
The latter half of that statement is because they were bred to be livestock guardians. Here's one chillin' with his herd of goats:
They will fuck up an entire pack of coyotes single handedly (pawedly?). All that fluff and extra skin is protection against teeth and claws so that they can protect their flock, herd, etc. They are unendingly kind and loyal to those creatures and people that they care about, but if you chose to fuck with their family? You're as good as dead. This Great Pyrenees in Georgia took on a pack of eleven coyotes who were at the fence of his flock, likely to protect his pregnant mate, while the other guardian dogs herded the flock of sheep away from the fight. He killed eight of them. Eight. By himself. (I'll include a post-fight picture of a Pyrenees at the bottom of this post, under the cut)
So, uh, long story short, I think a Great Pyrenees is the perfect comparison for Illya- a gentle giant, kind and extremely protective, deadly if you mess with his family, but still a big puppy dog who loves his people 💕💕💕💕
(⚠️CW: for bloody animal, but he's fine, it's not his blood)
I am *very* late to this, but thank you so much @the-golden-comet for the tag!!!
Here's the last seven lines I wrote for a drabble based on a message sent by @prettyboynapoleonsolo about the missing time between Solo's vest being buttoned in The Chair, and unbuttoned in The Chopper ajsgsjkagsgshsk 💕💕💕💕
The contact is almost comforting, grounding him to the moment. His partner's skin is warm, in a pleasant way rather than the searing of the chair. And his hands are surprisingly steady as he diligently and carefully unbuttons Solo's vest. His touch is cordial, focused on keeping his hands from brushing too close to Solo's body. The result is each unclasped button tugging Solo minutely closer to him, until he can smell the spice of his cologne mingling with the heady musk of sweat. Until his heart hammers in the back of his throat. Until he has to rest the hand not gripping Illya's wrist on the Russian's upper arm to ground himself, knuckles white where they've twisted in the fabric of his jacket sleeve.

From "You're Afraid (However Could You Not Be?)", the sequel (AHHHHH🤩🤩💕💕💕) to @pippinoftheshire 's STUNNING fic, "And So, In Darkness, It Lies Watching. It Lies Waiting"
A low drone like a thousand hornets shakes his diaphragm. The arm he's holding moves, the drone picking up in bass and volume. A feeling like frozen shards of glass skirts along his jawline, then a sharp pain pierces his scalp. Illya barely has time to hiss in a breath before a mouth seals over his own. Goosebumps flood his body as Solo claws at his skin, pushing him backwards and stealing breathtaking kisses. Confusion wars with need in Illya's mind. He wants this, he knows he does, but when had the fear and anger melted into desire, into care? Why does Solo want him, too? Why does the pain he knows will leave behind crimson ravines and the taste of iron on Solo's tongue not dissuade him? His knees hit the bed and he falls back onto it with a gasp caught between pleasure and pain. Claws rake up his side, pushing up his turtleneck, and Solo breaks the kiss to whisper against the shell of Illya's ear, “Don't open your eyes.” The command sounds like it comes from deep within Illya's skull. He nods wordlessly, allowing his hands to roam as much of Solo's otherworldly skin and hair as he'll let him. Solo kisses him like a wolf tears at the carcass of a bear; starving, desperate, steeped in violence. It's like he wants to eat him alive, and Illya has the startling revelation that that may be exactly what Solo intends to do.

polyamory W from walmart??
Illya gets dragged into being the marshmallow, grumbling all the way about how childish and stupid this whole thing is. Gaby and Solo bicker over who will be the chocolate and who will be the graham cracker. But when they finally set up the camera to take the photo, you can see the love spilling out from each of them. Illya is only semi-reluctantly beaming, his sparkling eyes betraying him. Solo and Gaby, each with an arm around Illya, are caught mid-laugh. And after it's taken, they sync up and tackle-hug Illya with teases of making s'mores 😆😆😆💕💕💕
